Chapter 6 - The Man Who Erased My Past

The woman standing in the hospital doorway didn't say anything.

She didn't need to.

The moment I saw Lily's jacket in her hands, my entire body went cold.

"Where is my daughter?"

My voice came out differently.

Not like a confused employee.

Not like a man searching for answers.

Like a father who knew something had happened.

The woman looked at Clare.

Then at Ethan.

Then finally at me.

Her eyes were full of fear.

"Daniel..."

I stepped toward her.

"Where is Lily?"

She tightened her grip on the small pink jacket.

"The man who took her wanted you to see this."

My heart stopped.

"Who took her?"

She didn't answer.

She just handed me the jacket.

I grabbed it.

It was Lily's favorite jacket.

The one with the small embroidered stars on the sleeves.

She wore it every morning when she walked to school.

I pressed it against my chest.

And then I noticed something.

A piece of paper was tucked inside the pocket.

My hands shook as I pulled it out.

Three words were written on it.

"Come alone, Daniel."

Clare saw it.

Her expression changed immediately.

"No."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She shook her head.

"You can't go."

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"My daughter is with someone who wants to hurt her."

"I know."

"Then why are you telling me not to go?"

Because for the first time, Clare Whitmore looked afraid of something.

Not afraid for herself.

Afraid for me.

"Because that's what he wants."

I stared at her.

"Who?"

Her lips parted.

But she couldn't say it.

Ethan answered instead.

"Your father."

The words felt impossible.

I had spent my entire life believing my father was gone.

A man who left when I was young.

A man who became nothing more than a faded memory.

But now everyone kept saying his name like he was some kind of ghost who had been watching me.

"You told me he was dead."

I looked at Ethan.

His face tightened.

"I was wrong."

"Wrong?"

My voice rose.

"You were wrong about my father being dead?"

Ethan looked away.

"Daniel..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"No more secrets."

The room became silent.

"I lost ten years of my life because people decided what I was allowed to know."

I looked at Clare.

"You knew I had a son."

She lowered her eyes.

I looked at Ethan.

"You knew about my past."

Then at the woman holding Lily's jacket.

"You know what happened to my daughter."

My voice became quiet.

"Everyone knows something except me."

Nobody spoke.

Because they knew I was right.

Then Clare slowly pushed herself up on the hospital bed.

The monitors beside her began beeping faster.

But she ignored them.

"Daniel."

I looked at her.

"I need to tell you something before you leave."

Something about her voice made me stop.

Not because she was my boss.

Because she sounded like someone saying goodbye.

"Ten years ago, when the accident happened..."

She swallowed.

"I thought I lost you."

The room went still.

"I searched for you."

I stared at her.

"What?"

"I searched for months."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"But every record had changed."

She looked at Ethan.

"Every person who knew us was paid or threatened."

My fists tightened.

"And Noah?"

Her face broke.

"They took him."

The words were almost too quiet to hear.

"They took him because he was proof."

"Proof of what?"

"That I had a life outside Whitmore."

She looked at me.

"That I chose you."

A silence followed.

A painful one.

Because suddenly I remembered something.

Not a full memory.

Just a feeling.

A woman laughing.

A small hand holding mine.

A voice telling me:

"Promise me you'll always come home."

I closed my eyes.

The memory disappeared before I could catch it.

Then Clare whispered:

"I never stopped looking for you."

I opened my eyes.

"Then why did you let me work for you?"

A tear moved down her cheek.

"Because I didn't know."

"What?"

"I didn't know it was you."

I froze.

She continued.

"When Daniel Mercer applied for the job, I thought it was just a coincidence."

She looked at me.

"Your name was common."

My breathing slowed.

"But then you smiled."

A sad smile appeared on her face.

"Exactly the way you used to."

I looked away.

Because somehow that hurt more.

She remembered everything.

I remembered nothing.

A phone rang.

Everyone turned.

It was Ethan's.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

"What?"

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

But whatever he heard made his face lose all color.

"Ethan?"

He slowly lowered the phone.

"It's him."

Clare went completely still.

"Who?"

Ethan looked at me.

"Your father."

The room froze.

"He wants Daniel to come to the estate."

I looked at the note in my hand.

Come alone.

My father wanted me there.

But why?

What did he want?

And why now?

I grabbed my jacket.

"I'm going."

Clare shook her head.

"No."

I looked at her.

"I can't stay here."

"He will use you."

"He already did."

My voice cracked.

"For ten years."

Nobody argued.

Because there was nothing left to say.

Ethan stepped forward.

"I'm coming with you."

I shook my head.

"The note says alone."

"That's exactly why you shouldn't go."

I looked at him.

"Then what do you suggest?"

He didn't answer.

Because we both knew.

There was no good choice.

Thirty minutes later, I was driving toward the old Whitmore estate.

The place where Clare grew up.

The place where my life had been destroyed.

Rain started falling again.

Just like the night everything changed.

I followed the road through the hills.

The estate appeared in the distance.

A massive house hidden behind iron gates.

I stopped the car.

For a moment, I couldn't move.

Because something about the place felt familiar.

Not from pictures.

From memory.

I walked toward the entrance.

The front door was already open.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The second was worse.

Someone had left a light on inside.

I stepped into the house.

"Hello?"

No answer.

Only silence.

The walls were covered with old photographs.

Family photographs.

Whitmore family.

Business celebrations.

Important moments.

Then I saw one picture that didn't belong.

A small photograph sitting on a table.

Me.

Clare.

And Noah.

I picked it up.

My hands trembled.

Because on the back was a date.

The same date I lost my memory.

A sound came from upstairs.

A child's voice.

"Daddy?"

My heart stopped.

"Lily?"

I ran toward the stairs.

"Lily!"

The voice came again.

But then another voice followed.

An older man's voice.

"Finally."

I froze.

At the top of the stairs stood a man.

Older.

Gray hair.

Cold eyes.

A man I had only seen in memories.

He looked at me like he had been waiting years for this moment.

Then he smiled.

"Hello, Daniel."

My body went numb.

Because behind him was Lily.

But she wasn't alone.

She was standing beside another child.

A little boy.

May you like

And that boy was holding a necklace I had never seen before.

A necklace with my name engraved on it.
