Chapter 3 - The Child She Hid From The World

"Don't say my name."
The stranger stood in the hospital hallway, staring at me like he had just found someone who was supposed to be dead.
I looked at Victor.
He wasn't looking at the man.
He was looking at me.
And that scared me more.
Because Victor Hale was a man who had negotiated billion-dollar contracts without blinking.
But now his hands were shaking.
"Who is he?" I whispered.
Victor didn't answer.
The stranger smiled slightly.
Not because he was happy.
Because he knew something I didn't.
"Daniel Mercer."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"You really don't remember."
My eyebrows tightened.
"Remember what?"
He took one step closer.
Victor immediately moved in front of me.
"That's far enough."
The stranger looked at Victor.
"You protected her for ten years."
A pause.
"But you couldn't protect him forever."
The words hit harder than they should have.
Him.
Who was him?
I felt my heartbeat rising.
"Victor."
He finally looked at me.
And for the first time since I met him, he looked guilty.
"Daniel..."
I waited.
"There's something you need to know."
Before he could continue, the hospital lights above us flickered.
A nurse shouted from the emergency room.
"Doctor! We lost her blood pressure!"
Everyone turned.
Even the stranger.
For a second, the hallway became chaos.
Doctors rushed past.
The stranger looked toward the emergency room.
Then back at me.
"She's running out of time."
Victor grabbed my shoulder.
"Do not listen to him."
But the stranger laughed quietly.
"That's what Clare always did."
He looked at me.
"She made sure you never remembered."
My stomach tightened.
"Remembered what?"
The stranger reached into his coat.
Victor immediately reacted.
"No."
But it was too late.
The stranger pulled out a small photograph.
He held it toward me.
I didn't want to take it.
Something inside me already knew.
Something about that picture would change everything.
But my hand moved anyway.
I looked down.
And the world stopped.
It was me.
Years younger.
Standing beside a woman.
Clare.
But she looked different.
Not the powerful CEO from magazine covers.
Not the woman who controlled entire companies with a single phone call.
She looked softer.
She was smiling.
Actually smiling.
And between us was a little boy.
Maybe four years old.
The child was holding my hand.
My hand.
I stared at the photo.
"No."
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Because I knew that face.
I had seen those eyes before.
Every morning.
Every night.
When I looked at my daughter Lily.
The boy in the picture had the same eyes.
My eyes.
"What is this?"
Nobody answered.
The stranger leaned closer.
"His name was Noah."
The name felt familiar.
Like a song I had forgotten.
"No."
I shook my head.
"I don't have a son."
Victor looked away.
That was the answer.
Not his words.
His silence.
I turned toward him.
"Victor."
He closed his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
My chest tightened.
"Sorry for what?"
The hallway became quiet again.
Even the doctors seemed far away.
Victor spoke softly.
"Before Clare became the person everyone knows today, she had another life."
I couldn't breathe.
"What does that mean?"
"It means the company wasn't her first priority."
He looked at the photograph.
"You were."
I felt anger rising.
"No."
My voice became louder.
"No, that doesn't make sense."
Because if this was true...
If Clare and I had a child together...
Then my entire life was a lie.
Lily.
My daughter.
The reason I worked every day.
The reason I kept going.
I remembered the day she was born.
I remembered holding her tiny hand.
I remembered the hospital room.
I remembered being alone.
I remembered the nurse telling me her mother hadn't survived.
My wife had died.
Everyone told me that.
Everyone.
But now I was standing in a hospital holding proof that another child existed.
A child I had never known.
A child Clare had hidden.
"Where is Noah?"
The stranger didn't answer immediately.
That scared me.
"Where is my son?"
The stranger looked toward the emergency room.
Then at Victor.
"Ask her when she wakes up."
My jaw tightened.
"No."
I stepped forward.
"You brought me here. You wanted me to know something. So tell me."
The stranger studied me.
Then he said the one sentence I wasn't ready to hear.
"Noah wasn't taken from you."
A pause.
"He was taken because someone wanted you to disappear."
My blood went cold.
"What are you talking about?"
Before he answered, alarms sounded from the emergency room.
Doctors rushed out.
A nurse looked around.
"Daniel Mercer?"
I turned.
"Yes."
The nurse ran toward me.
"Ms. Whitmore is awake."
Everyone froze.
Clare was awake.
After everything.
After the accident.
After the secrets.
After the impossible photograph.
She was finally awake.
The nurse continued.
"But she asked for you."
I looked at Victor.
He looked terrified.
"Why?"
The nurse swallowed.
"She said there was something she needed to tell you before anyone else arrived."
"Who else?"
The nurse looked toward the hospital entrance.
I followed her gaze.
A group of reporters had gathered outside.
Cameras flashed through the glass doors.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
My hands went numb.
It was a picture.
A recent picture.
Not old.
Not a memory.
A picture taken tonight.
It showed Lily standing outside my apartment.
And someone was standing behind her.
The message underneath was only four words.
"She's next, Daniel."
I looked up.
My heart was pounding.
Because at that exact moment, the emergency room doors opened.
And Clare Whitmore whispered my name.
But she wasn't looking at me.
She was looking behind me.
May you like
At the person standing in the doorway.
The person she thought had disappeared ten years ago.
