Chapter 13 - The Man Behind the Name

We ran through the back hallway.

My father led us toward an old study.

Charles locked the door.

Charlotte pulled the curtains.

Daniel held the baby.

I could hear footsteps outside.

Slow.

Calm.

My grandfather wasn't rushing.

He knew we had nowhere to go.

My father opened a hidden panel behind a bookshelf.

“There's another exit.”

We moved through the narrow passage.

My mother was waiting at the end.

I stopped.

“Mom?”

She looked at my father.

Tears filled her eyes.

“You came back.”

He nodded.

“You knew?”

“I knew he was alive.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

I shook my head.

“Everyone was afraid.”

She looked at my baby.

“I thought the name would protect him.”

“It almost destroyed everything.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

Charles stepped forward.

“Mom.”

She looked at him.

“I am sorry.”

He stared at her.

“For twenty-eight years.”

She nodded.

“For twenty-eight years.”

Charlotte stepped beside him.

“And me?”

My mother began crying.

“I am sorry.”

Charlotte looked away.

There was no easy forgiveness.

Not yet.

Maybe not for a long time.

But there was something else now.

Truth.

My father pointed toward the exit.

“We need to leave.”

A gunshot sounded upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Daniel pulled me behind him.

My father whispered:

“He found us.”

We ran.

Outside, police lights suddenly appeared.

Father Michael had called them.

He had believed us.

Thomas had given him the documents.

Victor was arrested at the church.

But my grandfather was gone.

For the next several hours, investigators searched the property.

They found hidden accounts.

Forged documents.

Old recordings.

Evidence that explained decades of manipulation.

The trust was frozen.

My mother's name was removed from control.

My father gave a statement.

Thomas did too.

And for the first time, the family secrets became evidence instead of whispers.

But my grandfather disappeared.

Three days later, I received a letter.

No return address.

Inside was one sentence.

You were never supposed to find the third record.

Attached was a copy of my original birth certificate.

There was something different.

A fourth name.

Not a child.

A witness.

My father's signature.

And beneath it:

Margaret knew.

I stared at my mother.

“What does this mean?”

She closed her eyes.

“It means your father knew the truth before I did.”

My father shook his head.

“No.”

He took the paper.

His expression changed.

“This isn't my signature.”

I felt cold.

“Then whose is it?”

He turned the page over.

There was another signature.

Thomas's.

He stared at it.

“I didn't sign this.”

The room went silent.

Then Charlotte looked at the date.

“This was signed eleven years ago.”

Charles whispered:

“That's when I was supposed to have died.”

A knock came at the door.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

Daniel moved in front of me.

My father reached for the handle.

“Don't.”

The knocking came again.

Then a woman's voice whispered from the other side.

“Emily?”

I recognized it.

Rebecca.

My father's supposed first wife.

May you like

My hand went cold.

The handle began to turn...
