Chapter 11 - The Letter My Father Left

I couldn't read the rest.

My hands were shaking too badly.

Daniel took the letter.

“Do you want me to?”

I nodded.

He read silently.

His face changed.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“Your father says Charles wasn't his biological son.”

My mother closed her eyes.

I felt dizzy.

“Then who was?”

The letter continued.

Your mother believes I never discovered the truth.

She is wrong.

I knew before you were born.

The man who fathered Charles and Charlotte was someone inside the family.

Thomas looked up.

“Who?”

Daniel continued reading.

I won't write his name here.

If this letter is ever found, it will put my children at risk.

But I left the answer in the recording.

He pointed toward the flash drive.

We took it home.

The file contained one audio recording.

My father's voice filled the room.

He sounded young.

Terrified.

“Emily, if you're hearing this, I'm sorry.”

I closed my eyes.

“I didn't abandon you.”

My mother began crying.

“I was forced to disappear.”

The recording continued.

“Your grandfather discovered that Charles was not his biological grandson.”

A pause.

“He became obsessed with finding the truth.”

Then my father's voice dropped.

“The man responsible was Thomas Reed.”

Everyone turned toward Thomas.

He went white.

“No.”

My mother stared at him.

“You?”

Thomas stepped backward.

“I didn't.”

The recording continued.

“Thomas had an affair with Margaret.”

My mother covered her face.

Daniel stopped the recording.

No one spoke.

I looked at Thomas.

“Is it true?”

He couldn't answer.

My mother whispered:

“Yes.”

I felt sick.

Thomas was Charles's father.

And Charlotte's.

My father had known.

My mother had hidden it.

Suddenly everything made sense.

The family had been built on lies.

I looked at Thomas.

“Why did you stay?”

He whispered:

“Because I loved your mother.”

“And Charles?”

“I loved him too.”

“Then why did you let him disappear?”

“I tried to find him.”

My mother screamed:

“You left me to deal with it!”

Thomas shouted back:

“You chose your daughter!”

Silence.

My heart broke.

My mother had chosen me.

Thomas had failed Charles.

My father had disappeared.

And three children had paid for all of it.

Then the flash drive made a sound.

Another file had appeared.

None of us had opened it.

The screen displayed:

FINAL RECORDING.

Daniel clicked it.

My father's voice returned.

“This is the part they don't know.”

A pause.

“The trust was never created for Charles.”

My mother froze.

“It was created for all three children.”

Thomas whispered:

“No.”

My father continued.

“Your grandfather changed the terms after discovering the affair.”

The recording crackled.

“He wanted the children divided.”

Then came a final sentence.

“If my children are together again, the trust belongs to them.”

The audio ended.

I looked at Charlotte.

Then Charles.

For the first time, all three of us understood.

The name Charles had been used to divide us.

But the inheritance was never meant for one child.

It was meant to reunite three.

My phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a name I hadn't seen in decades.

Dad.

My mother screamed:

“Don't answer!”

I stared at the screen.

The phone kept ringing.

Then a voicemail appeared.

I pressed play.

My father's voice whispered:

“Emily, if you're hearing this, I'm alive.”
