Chapter 6 - Protocol Seventeen

Nathan didn't enter immediately.

That was what Sloane expected.

Instead he stepped beside the door.

Base security surrounded the corridor.

Rebecca found the secondary access.

Marcus reached the exterior window.

Daniel killed electronic control to the room.

Nathan spoke through the door.

"Victor."

Sloane answered.

"I wondered whether you'd remember how to think."

"Let them go."

"You know what I want."

"Maya's original drive."

"Correct."

"You already tracked it."

"And you made copies."

Nathan listened.

Two voices inside.

Laura.

Emily.

Angela too.

Nathan asked:

"Why Emily?"

"Because your wife wouldn't stop."

"This started with Laura."

"It started with you."

Nathan frowned.

Sloane explained.

Black Wing operations had exposed an overseas procurement scheme years earlier.

Laura later followed the money.

Nathan's military career and Laura's accounting investigation collided without either knowing it.

Sloane had protected the scheme.

Cross had sold the intelligence.

The wealthy families financed it.

Their sons inherited not only money, but arrogance.

Emily's assault had been the loose thread that pulled everything apart.

Nathan kept him talking.

Daniel signaled.

Ready.

Rebecca signaled.

Ready.

Marcus signaled from outside.

Ready.

Nathan said:

"Victor, there's something you still don't understand."

"What?"

"You think Black Wing came back for revenge."

Silence.

"We came back for witnesses."

Federal tactical officers breached.

The next seconds were controlled chaos.

Angela surrendered immediately.

Sloane grabbed Emily.

Nathan stopped.

"Let her go."

Sloane held a weapon.

Emily was terrified.

But conscious.

Watching.

Nathan remembered teaching her as a child what to do if grabbed.

Drop weight.

Turn.

Move away from the weapon.

Emily did.

Sloane lost balance.

Marcus entered through the side.

Officers overwhelmed Sloane.

No heroic execution.

No revenge shot.

Handcuffs.

That was the victory.

Sloane would stand in court.

He would hear names.

Maya Bennett.

Emily Walker.

Laura Walker.

Every person his money had tried to erase.

Weeks passed.

Then months.

The investigation became national news.

Chase Halston faced charges for aggravated assault, conspiracy, obstruction, and witness intimidation.

Brent Mercer cooperated after realizing his father couldn't protect him.

Logan Vale pleaded guilty and provided the original party video from an encrypted backup.

The video showed everything.

Chase ordering guests away.

Brent locking the door.

Logan taking Emily's phone.

Chase striking her repeatedly.

The defense could no longer call it a fall.

Richard Halston was charged with obstruction and conspiracy.

Charles Mercer faced financial crimes.

Gregory Vale became the center of a federal contracting investigation.

Cross's testimony exposed decades of corruption.

Sloane faced the largest case of all.

But Nathan's family faced something harder than court.

Healing.

Emily underwent surgery.

Then another.

She hated the first weeks.

Eating hurt.

Talking hurt.

Mirrors hurt.

Nathan stayed beside her.

Laura did too.

Their reunion wasn't magically easy.

Eleven years couldn't disappear because someone came home.

Emily loved her mother.

She was also angry.

Laura accepted both.

One evening Emily finally asked:

"Why didn't you trust Dad?"

Laura cried.

"I thought I was protecting him."

"Were you?"

Laura looked toward Nathan.

"No."

Nathan didn't punish her with silence.

"We all made decisions based on fear."

Rebecca sat nearby.

She had her own apology to make.

Nathan listened.

Then said:

"No more secrets."

Black Wing agreed.

The team had survived by compartmentalizing everything.

Now they needed something else.

Honesty.

Three months after the attack, Emily returned to college.

Nathan drove her.

She touched the fading scar beneath her jaw.

"Nervous?"

"Terrified."

"We can go home."

"No."

She opened the door.

"They already took enough."

Nathan smiled.

"That's my girl."

Before she left, Emily looked back.

"Trial tomorrow."

"I know."

"You ready?"

Nathan thought about Sloane.

Halston.

Cross.

All the men who believed power meant never answering for anything.

"Yes."

The trial became a spectacle.

Nathan hated that.

Emily didn't.

She walked through cameras without hiding her face.

Inside court, she testified for four hours.

Chase stared at her.

She never looked away.

When asked what he'd said before the attack, Emily answered clearly.

"He said his family could make me disappear."

The prosecutor asked:

"Did you believe him?"

Emily paused.

"That night, yes."

"And now?"

The defense objected.

Sustained.

Emily smiled anyway.

Nathan understood.

Not anymore.

The evidence was overwhelming.

But one mystery remained.

The number seventeen.

Sloane insisted it was only slang.

The prosecution believed otherwise.

Daniel kept searching.

Finally, one night, he called Nathan.

"I found the original."

"Original what?"

"Protocol."

Nathan met him at the operations room.

Rebecca was already there.

Daniel displayed a scanned document from eighteen years earlier.

PROTOCOL 17.

Not Sloane's invention.

A contingency framework for protecting illegal procurement operations by compromising investigations.

At the bottom was an authorization block.

Nathan read the signature.

He went cold.

Rebecca whispered:

"No."

The name belonged to someone none of them had suspected.

Someone still powerful.

Someone scheduled to testify for the government the next morning.

Nathan looked at Daniel.

"Where is he?"

Daniel checked.

Then his face changed.

"Already inside the courthouse."

Nathan grabbed his coat.

His phone rang.

Emily.

He answered.

"Dad?"

"What?"

"I'm at the courthouse."

Nathan stopped.

"Emily, leave."

"Why?"

"Leave now."

"Dad—"

A voice sounded behind her.

An older man's voice.

"Miss Walker?"

Nathan recognized it.

Emily whispered:

May you like

"Someone just called my name."

The line went silent.
