Chapter 4 - The Woman in the Photograph

Nathan stared at the photograph until the pixels blurred.

Laura Walker.

His wife.

Emily's mother.

Dead eleven years.

Except the woman in the photograph had Laura's eyes.

Her scar.

Her posture.

Rebecca stood beside him.

"Nate."

"Don't."

"We need verification."

"I know my wife."

"And someone knows you know her."

Nathan looked again.

The timestamp said yesterday.

Daniel analyzed the file.

"No obvious manipulation."

"Location?"

"Working."

Emily sat safely beside Nathan now.

Her hands trembled.

"I watched Mom die."

Nathan remembered the funeral.

Closed casket.

A car explosion during Laura's work trip.

Identification through dental records.

He had never seen her body.

Rebecca asked the question Nathan couldn't.

"Who confirmed the identification?"

Nathan looked at her.

"Victor Sloane."

The room changed.

Eleven years earlier, Sloane had still been a federal prosecutor.

Laura had worked as a forensic accountant contracted to review defense procurement.

Vale Industries had been one of the companies she audited.

Nathan felt sick.

"This started before Maya."

Elena nodded.

"Much earlier."

Daniel located the photograph.

An industrial complex forty miles away.

Owned through shell companies.

Final beneficiary:

Vale Industries.

Nathan wanted to go immediately.

Rebecca stopped him.

"If Laura is alive, they've kept her hidden eleven years. They want you emotional."

Nathan looked at Emily.

His daughter whispered:

"Bring her home."

The team prepared carefully.

Law enforcement was notified.

Warrants obtained using evidence recovered from Maya's archive and the hangar recording.

No vigilante raid.

No revenge.

Nathan wanted something stronger.

Truth that survived court.

The industrial complex appeared abandoned.

Inside, they found medical equipment.

Bedrooms.

Documents.

No Laura.

But there was evidence she'd been there.

Hair.

Medication.

A notebook.

Nathan opened it.

Laura's handwriting.

He recognized it instantly.

Pages of financial records.

Names.

Payments.

And one repeated phrase:

THE THREE SONS ARE NOT THE BEGINNING.

Nathan turned pages faster.

Laura had discovered a corruption network involving defense contracts.

Halston built facilities.

Mercer moved money.

Vale supplied equipment.

Sloane eliminated legal exposure.

Their children had grown up believing consequences were things poorer families experienced.

Emily's assault wasn't merely another crime.

It had accidentally connected Nathan to the network Laura had uncovered.

Then Rebecca found a recording device.

Daniel played it.

Laura appeared onscreen.

Older.

Tired.

Alive.

"Nathan, if you're watching this, they finally made the mistake I prayed they'd never make."

Nathan couldn't speak.

Laura continued.

"I tried to protect you and Emily by disappearing."

Emily began crying.

"They told me if I returned, they would expose your classified operations and destroy everyone who served with you."

Nathan looked toward Rebecca.

She knew.

He saw it.

"You knew she was alive."

Rebecca's face broke.

"Nate—"

"You knew."

"Not at first."

"How long?"

"Seven years."

Nathan stepped backward.

His oldest friend.

His teammate.

Seven years.

"Why?"

"Because Laura begged us."

Nathan stared.

"Us?"

Marcus looked down.

Elena closed her eyes.

Daniel said nothing.

Nathan understood.

The team that never died had kept his wife from him.

His voice became barely audible.

"All of you?"

Rebecca nodded.

"We protected her."

"You lied to me."

"We protected Emily."

"You let my daughter mourn her mother."

Rebecca's eyes filled.

"Because the alternative could have gotten her killed."

Nathan turned away.

For the first time since the hospital, his control cracked.

He struck the metal desk with both hands.

Not violence toward anyone.

Just pain with nowhere else to go.

Emily approached him.

"Dad."

Nathan looked at her.

She was crying.

"Find Mom first."

Those words steadied him.

The betrayal could wait.

Laura couldn't.

Daniel continued the video.

Laura explained that Sloane had moved her repeatedly.

Recently, something changed.

Maya's hidden evidence had resurfaced.

Sloane panicked.

Then Emily overheard Chase at the party.

Two separate threats became one.

Nathan finally understood why his daughter had been attacked so brutally.

They weren't simply silencing a witness.

They believed Emily might know where Laura was.

Nathan turned to Rebecca.

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

"You've been protecting her."

"Contact stopped three months ago."

"Why?"

"She disappeared from us too."

Daniel interrupted.

"There's another file."

Audio only.

Sloane's voice.

"Laura, your husband thinks you're dead. Keep it that way."

Laura answered:

"One day he'll know."

Sloane laughed.

"No. One day your daughter will make the same mistake you did."

Nathan's face went still.

The recording was nine years old.

Sloane had threatened Emily when she was thirteen.

This had always been personal.

Federal authorities expanded the investigation.

Halston and Mercer remained in custody.

Their sons were arrested.

Chase screamed at cameras.

Brent demanded his father.

Logan said nothing.

Logan was different.

During interrogation, he asked for Nathan.

Against advice, Nathan agreed.

They met through reinforced glass.

Logan looked exhausted.

"I didn't hit Emily."

"You held her phone."

"Yes."

"You helped."

Logan lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

"Then why am I here?"

"Because Chase is afraid of you."

"He should be afraid of prison."

"Not you."

Nathan waited.

"Your wife."

Nathan's heart tightened.

"What about her?"

"Chase saw her."

"When?"

"Two months ago."

"Where?"

"At his father's house."

Nathan leaned closer.

"Why?"

"She came to see Richard."

"About what?"

"I don't know."

"Think."

Logan swallowed.

"They argued about a ledger."

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

"What ledger?"

"Something called Black Wing."

Nathan froze.

Black Wing had been Nathan's old unit designation.

Nobody outside classified circles should know it.

"Say that again."

"Black Wing."

Nathan stood.

Logan pressed his hands against the glass.

"Wait."

Nathan stopped.

"Chase has it."

"Has what?"

"The ledger."

"Where?"

Logan looked toward the observation camera.

Then back.

"His father kept a private vault."

Nathan sat again.

"Location."

Logan gave him an address.

A Halston property outside the city.

Federal agents obtained a warrant.

The vault existed.

Inside were financial records connecting millions of dollars to illegal procurement contracts.

There was also a Black Wing personnel file.

Nathan opened it.

Photographs of his team.

Mission summaries.

Family information.

Emily.

Laura.

Everything.

Someone had sold classified information.

Rebecca whispered:

"Who had access?"

Nathan knew.

Very few people.

Then he saw the authorization signature.

His former commanding officer.

General Thomas Keller.

Nathan stared at it.

No.

Keller had protected Emily.

He had provided the base.

He had helped them.

Unless that had been the point.

Nathan's phone vibrated.

A message from Keller.

COME ALONE.

Nathan looked toward Rebecca.

Another message arrived.

It contained an address.

Then a photograph.

Laura sat in a chair.

Alive.

Behind her stood Keller.

Nathan reached for his coat.

Rebecca blocked the doorway.

"You're not going alone."

Nathan showed her the final line.

IF BLACK WING FOLLOWS YOU, LAURA DIES.

Rebecca stared at it.

Nathan moved past her.

He reached the exit.

May you like

The door was already open.

General Keller was standing on the other side.
