Chapter 6 - The Truth They Buried

The warehouse door opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because the person standing there was someone I never expected to see.
Not because I didn't know him.
Because I did.
For fifteen years, I believed he was one of the people who carried my friend Thomas Vale's coffin.
For fifteen years, I believed he was a man who helped me say goodbye.
But there he was.
Standing in front of me.
Alive.
My mind struggled to accept what my eyes were seeing.
Thomas took one step back.
His face had lost all color.
"Richard..."
The man at the door looked at him.
Then smiled.
"Still surprised to see me?"
I stared at Thomas.
"Who is he?"
Thomas didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
The fear on his face answered for him.
The man walked inside.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Like he owned the place.
"My name is Richard Hale."
My chest tightened.
Another Richard.
Another name.
Another secret.
But then Thomas whispered something that made everything worse.
"He was supposed to be dead."
The man smiled.
"Funny."
He looked at me.
"That's what everyone keeps saying."
I stepped forward.
"What do you want?"
Richard looked at me.
"The same thing I've always wanted."
He glanced at the phone on the table.
"The truth to stay buried."
My hand tightened.
"You kidnapped my daughter."
"No."
His answer came immediately.
Almost calmly.
"I saved your daughter."
I almost laughed.
"Saved her?"
I pointed toward the phone.
"She was tied to a chair."
Richard's expression changed slightly.
"You don't understand what she found."
"I understand enough."
"No."
He shook his head.
"You don't."
Thomas stepped between us.
"Richard, it's over."
Richard looked at him.
"Is it?"
A pause.
"You're still protecting him."
Thomas didn't move.
"Like you protected his wife?"
That sentence hit me.
I turned toward Thomas.
"What does he mean?"
Silence.
I hated silence.
Because silence meant someone was hiding something.
Thomas looked at me.
"I wanted to tell you."
"When?"
He looked down.
I nodded.
"Exactly."
Richard walked around the room.
"You want to know why Emma died?"
I looked at him.
"Yes."
"Then stop asking Thomas."
He pointed at him.
"Ask the man who helped create the entire problem."
My eyes went to Thomas.
"Is that true?"
Thomas looked broken.
Not guilty.
Not innocent.
Just broken.
"I made mistakes."
I stepped closer.
"That's not an answer."
He took a breath.
"Years ago, our unit discovered a private operation using military intelligence to control witnesses and erase evidence."
"The company?"
Thomas nodded.
"The company behind Dustin."
Richard smiled.
"And behind your wife."
My fists tightened.
"Emma wasn't supposed to find out."
Thomas continued.
"But she did."
"Because of me?"
"No."
Thomas looked at me.
"Because of Marcy."
I froze.
Again.
Everything came back to my daughter.
"Why?"
Thomas reached for the phone.
He played the video again.
Emma's face appeared.
This time, there was something different.
I noticed it immediately.
Fear.
Not fear for herself.
Fear for someone else.
"Marcy was born with access to something."
I stared at the screen.
Emma continued.
"Something that was never supposed to leave our family."
The video cut.
Thomas paused.
"Your wife found the truth about the organization."
"And?"
"She discovered they were searching for something."
"What?"
Thomas looked at me.
"A file connected to your military career."
I shook my head.
"I don't have anything."
"You don't."
A pause.
"But they thought you did."
The pieces slowly connected.
The mission.
Thomas's disappearance.
Emma's death.
Dustin.
The phone.
All of it.
Someone had spent years trying to find something that I didn't even know existed.
"Why use Dustin?"
Richard answered.
"Because people like Dustin are easy to control."
He looked at me.
"Give them power. Give them attention. Make them believe they're untouchable."
I thought about Dustin's smile.
His confidence.
His arrogance.
"He was just a pawn."
Richard nodded.
"Exactly."
Then my phone vibrated.
Everyone looked.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
"Your daughter knows the location."
My heart dropped.
"What location?"
Richard looked at the message.
For the first time, he looked worried.
Thomas noticed.
"What?"
Richard didn't answer.
"Richard."
He stared at my phone.
Then whispered:
"She's awake."
I looked at him.
"Who?"
He looked at me.
"Your daughter."
A moment passed.
Then another message arrived.
This time, it was from Marcy's phone.
A video.
My hands shook as I opened it.
The screen showed a dark room.
Marcy was sitting there.
Alive.
Terrified.
But conscious.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Dad..."
I almost stopped breathing.
"I'm sorry."
A man's voice spoke from behind her.
A voice I recognized.
The video ended before I could see his face.
But I knew that voice.
Because I had heard it before.
In the hospital.
In the gym.
In every place where the truth had been hidden.
I looked at Thomas.
"Who is that?"
Thomas didn't answer.
Because he already knew.
Then the warehouse lights flickered.
The door behind Richard locked automatically.
May you like
And from the other side of the room, a familiar voice said:
"You should have listened when I told you to stop looking."
