Chapter 5 - The Father Who Never Died

The document landed on the concrete floor between us.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The man standing in front of me looked older than the person I remembered from the photographs, but there was no mistaking him.
The same eyes.
The same scar above his left eyebrow.
The same expression my father wore whenever he knew something everyone else didn't.
But my father was dead.
I had watched the funeral.
I had watched the coffin disappear.
I had watched people I trusted tell me the same story until I stopped questioning it.
A car accident.
A tragic night.
A life that ended too soon.
That was the truth I had carried for years.
Until now.
"Who are you?" I asked.
The man looked at me for a long moment.
Then he answered.
"Someone who should have come back a long time ago."
My jaw tightened.
"That doesn't answer my question."
He looked down at the document.
"It will."
I picked it up.
The paper was old.
The ink had faded.
But the signature at the bottom was clear.
My father's signature.
I stared at it.
My hands didn't shake often.
That night, they did.
"Where did you get this?"
The man stepped closer.
"Your father gave it to me."
My eyes lifted.
"When?"
"Twelve years ago."
The same year Isabella disappeared.
The same year my world collapsed.
The same year everyone told me I lost everything.
I looked at Daniel.
He wouldn't meet my eyes.
That was when I understood.
He knew.
He knew this man.
He knew my father was alive.
He knew Isabella was alive.
And he had allowed me to spend twelve years believing I was alone.
The anger came slowly.
Quietly.
The kind of anger that didn't need shouting.
"Everyone knew."
Nobody answered.
"Everyone knew except me."
Daniel finally spoke.
"Victor..."
"No."
My voice stopped him.
"You don't get to explain this."
The warehouse fell silent again.
Elena watched me carefully.
She saw what the others didn't.
This wasn't just about betrayal.
This was about realizing the entire foundation of my life had been built on a lie.
I turned toward the older man.
"My father."
The word felt strange.
Almost impossible.
"Where is he?"
The man's expression changed.
Not fear.
Sadness.
"He wanted to see you."
"Then where is he?"
The man looked toward the dark windows overlooking the harbor.
"Because he believed if he came back too soon, you would die."
I stared at him.
"That makes no sense."
"It does when you understand Marcus Vale."
The name returned.
Again.
Always Marcus.
I stepped closer.
"Tell me everything."
The man looked at Daniel.
Then Elena.
Then back at me.
"My name is Richard Cole."
I recognized the name immediately.
Not personally.
Professionally.
Richard Cole was a former intelligence analyst.
A man who disappeared from public records years ago.
A man people said had access to information nobody else could find.
"You worked for my father."
Richard nodded.
"I protected him."
"From who?"
His eyes met mine.
"From the people closest to him."
I felt the answer before he said it.
"Someone inside my family."
Richard nodded slowly.
"Your father discovered Marcus Vale had been manipulating your family for years."
"Why?"
"Because Marcus didn't want money."
Richard looked at the photographs on the wall.
"He wanted control."
I looked at the pictures again.
My life.
My meetings.
My company.
Everything documented.
"He was watching me."
"Yes."
"For how long?"
Richard's expression hardened.
"Since before your father died."
I looked at Daniel.
"And you knew."
Daniel lowered his head.
"I knew pieces."
"Pieces?"
"I knew enough to be afraid."
I walked toward him.
"You let me trust people who were destroying me."
Daniel didn't defend himself.
Maybe because he knew he couldn't.
"I tried to stop it."
"When?"
"After Isabella disappeared."
I stopped.
"Tell me about Isabella."
Richard took a deep breath.
"She was the first one to discover the truth."
Elena stepped forward.
"She found the hidden accounts."
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
"And Marcus tried to kill her."
The room went quiet.
I looked at Elena.
"You knew that?"
She looked away.
"I knew he wanted her gone."
"But you didn't tell me."
"I didn't know who I could trust."
The answer hurt because I understood it.
For twelve years, everyone had been trapped by the same fear.
Trust had become dangerous.
Richard walked toward the table and opened another folder.
Inside was a collection of documents.
"The night your father supposedly died wasn't an accident."
I stared at him.
"What happened?"
"Your father discovered Marcus planned to take control of everything."
"My company?"
"Your company."
"My family?"
"Your family."
Richard paused.
"And you."
The room felt colder.
"Me?"
"Marcus believed you were the biggest threat."
"Why?"
"Because your father prepared you."
I frowned.
"I was just his son."
"No."
Richard looked directly at me.
"You were his backup plan."
I looked at the documents.
My father's handwriting appeared again.
Victor will protect what I built.
The sentence made my chest tighten.
My father had believed in me.
Even when I thought he abandoned me.
Even when I thought he chose to leave.
He had been fighting a war I didn't even know existed.
"So where is he?" I asked again.
Richard remained silent.
That silence told me something was wrong.
"Richard."
He looked at me.
"Your father is alive."
My heart stopped.
"But?"
Richard hesitated.
"He's been hiding because Marcus isn't the only person involved."
I waited.
"There is someone else."
"Who?"
Richard looked at the entrance of the warehouse.
The expression on his face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"Someone who has been standing beside you the entire time."
Before I could respond, the sound of footsteps echoed outside.
Not one person.
Many.
Daniel immediately reached for his weapon.
Elena moved behind the table.
Richard looked at me.
"He's here."
I tightened my fists.
"Marcus?"
Richard shook his head.
"No."
The warehouse doors slowly began to open.
A figure stepped through the darkness.
Someone I knew.
Someone who had been in my life for years.
Someone who had smiled at me.
Someone who had called me family.
The person walked forward.
May you like
And when the light revealed their face, I heard Richard whisper:
"Victor... meet the person who helped fake your father's death."
