Chapter 5 - The Husband Who Came Back

Claire could not move.
Daniel Whitaker stood beneath the ruined chapel doorway like a ghost that had forgotten to stay buried.
He was thinner.
His hair had grown longer.
A scar crossed his forehead.
He carried a rifle.
But he was Daniel.
The same blue eyes.
The same slight bend in his nose from being kicked by a horse at seventeen.
The same man she had mourned every night for four months.
Pike turned his revolver toward him.
Elias fired first.
The bullet struck Pike’s gun and sent it spinning.
Chaos erupted.
Jonah dragged Claire behind the stone altar.
Brenner fired through a broken window.
Daniel ducked as Caleb Moss’s men scattered outside.
Elias moved like a man built for violence but practiced in restraint.
He struck one deputy with the rifle stock.
Disarmed another.
Never fired when he did not have to.
Within seconds, Pike fled through the rear door.
Caleb followed.
Two men surrendered.
The rest ran.
Then the chapel became silent.
Claire stood.
Daniel lowered his rifle.
Neither spoke.
She crossed the room.
Then hit him.
Hard.
Daniel accepted it.
She hit him again.
Then wrapped both arms around him and sobbed against his chest.
He held her.
“Claire.”
“You were alive.”
“I know.”
“You let me bury you.”
“I know.”
“I hated you.”
“I know.”
“I prayed you were alive.”
His arms tightened.
“I know.”
She pulled back.
“You don’t know anything.”
Daniel looked at her stomach.
His face collapsed.
He sank to his knees.
Their baby kicked beneath his hand.
Daniel laughed and cried at once.
Claire placed her fingers in his hair.
For one minute, the conspiracy disappeared.
The dead returned.
The widow became a wife again.
Then Elias turned toward the door.
“Pike escaped.”
Daniel stood.
“I know where he’s going.”
“Where?”
“Our ranch.”
Claire’s joy died.
“Rose.”
They rode south without rest.
Daniel explained along the way.
After leaving Saint Mercy, he reached Fort Harrison.
A federal investigator named Marshal Nathan Cole believed him but needed evidence strong enough to dismantle Pike’s organization.
Daniel returned secretly to gather it.
Then he learned Anna had been killed.
Elias captured.
Rose missing.
“I thought Pike had murdered everyone who could prove it.”
Claire looked at him.
“So you stayed hidden.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
She gave him a look.
Daniel sighed.
“That sounded better in my head.”
“It usually does.”
Despite herself, Claire almost smiled.
Elias rode ahead.
Daniel watched him.
“He saved my life.”
“He also terrified half the town.”
“That sounds like Elias.”
“He carried a newborn through an auction in chains.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Pike will answer for that.”
They reached the ranch after midnight.
The barn was burning.
Claire screamed.
“Martha!”
She jumped from the wagon before Daniel could help.
The cabin door hung open.
Inside, furniture had been overturned.
Blood marked the floor.
Elias ran toward the cradle.
Empty.
“No.”
His voice did not sound human.
Claire found Martha behind the kitchen table.
Alive.
Barely.
Daniel knelt beside her.
“Who took Rose?”
Martha opened her eyes.
“Pike.”
Elias closed his eyes.
“Where?”
“Mine.”
Claire looked toward the mountains.
Of course.
Pike had returned to the one place where all his crimes began.
Martha gripped Claire’s sleeve.
“He wants the ledgers.”
“Did he say anything else?”
“He said bring everything before dawn.”
Elias picked up his rifle.
Daniel stopped him.
“You charge in, Rose dies.”
“She dies if we do nothing.”
“We’re not doing nothing.”
Daniel unfolded a map.
“The mine has three entrances.”
Claire stared.
“You remember?”
“All of it.”
Elias looked at him.
“The ventilation shaft.”
Daniel nodded.
“You and I enter there.”
Claire said, “And me.”
Both men answered at once.
“No.”
Claire crossed her arms.
Daniel stared at her stomach.
Elias stared at Daniel.
Then Elias quietly said, “I tried that argument.”
Daniel looked betrayed.
“You let her go into the mine?”
“I did not let her do anything.”
Claire almost smiled.
Then Martha groaned.
The reality returned.
Rose was in Pike’s hands.
They moved quickly.
Jonah rode to Black Ridge to gather trustworthy townsmen.
Brenner stayed with Martha.
Claire, Daniel, and Elias approached the mine before dawn.
Claire carried the black ledger.
Daniel carried copies.
Elias carried nothing but a knife.
At the main entrance, Pike waited.
Rose cried in Caleb Moss’s arms.
Claire’s blood chilled.
“Give her to Elias.”
Pike smiled.
“Give me the evidence.”
Daniel stepped from the trees.
Pike stared at him.
“You really are difficult to kill.”
Daniel answered, “You should have tried honesty.”
Caleb held Rose tighter.
Elias’s fists closed.
Pike pointed at Claire.
“The ledger.”
She lifted it.
“First the baby.”
“No.”
Claire took one step toward the mine shaft.
A deep black opening dropped beside the platform.
“Then nobody gets it.”
She held the ledger over the edge.
Pike’s smile vanished.
“You wouldn’t.”
“Daniel taught me to negotiate.”
Daniel whispered, “Did I?”
“No.”
Pike raised his gun.
“Enough.”
Claire released one corner of the book.
It slipped.
Pike shouted.
“Wait!”
Caleb looked nervous.
Rose cried harder.
Pike nodded.
“Give Kane the child.”
Caleb hesitated.
Then approached Elias.
For one hopeful second, Rose was only inches from safety.
Caleb suddenly drew a pistol.
Daniel shouted.
A gunshot fired.
Elias lunged.
Rose slipped from Caleb’s arms.
Claire screamed.
Elias dove forward and caught the newborn against his chest as both men crashed onto the wooden platform.
Daniel fired.
Caleb fell.
Pike ran into the mine.
Elias rolled onto his back.
Rose screamed.
Alive.
He held her against his chest, shaking.
Claire fell beside him.
“Is she hurt?”
“No.”
Daniel looked toward the tunnel.
“He’s getting away.”
Claire stood.
“No.”
She gave Rose one last look.
“Not this time.”
They followed Pike underground.
The tunnels shook from distant blasting.
Daniel stopped.
“He planted charges.”
Elias looked at the support beams.
“He’s collapsing the mine.”
Pike intended to bury everything.
Evidence.
Bodies.
Witnesses.
History.
They heard him ahead.
Daniel ran.
Claire followed until a contraction seized her.
She grabbed the wall.
Elias turned.
“Claire?”
“I’m fine.”
Another pain came.
Stronger.
Daniel’s face turned pale.
“Is the baby coming?”
“No.”
Claire breathed.
Then water ran down her legs.
All three stared at it.
Claire closed her eyes.
“Oh, wonderful.”
Behind them, the first explosion shook the mountain.
Daniel caught her.
Elias looked toward the collapsing tunnel.
May you like
Claire’s labor had begun.
And the only way out had just disappeared.
