Chapter 9 - The Truth About Seat 2A

Cross surrendered his phone before entering.

Marco searched him.

Police were called.

Until they arrived, Cross spoke.

Sofia had hired him months earlier because she suspected Isabella was accessing old financial records.

He followed her.

Discovered the flight plan.

Learned Antonio was being targeted.

"Why didn't you stop the flight?" Antonio demanded.

"I tried."

"The anonymous warning?"

"Mine."

Gabriel had believed he sent it.

He hadn't.

Cross had used information Gabriel unknowingly exposed.

Layers of people believing they were protecting Antonio.

None communicating.

All making the situation worse.

"Why board secretly?" Evelyn asked.

"Because Isabella knew my face."

"Then why sit in 4F?"

"I needed to watch Antonio."

"You touched the medication case."

"Yes."

Marco moved.

Cross raised his hands.

"After I saw someone else touch it."

Silence.

"Who?"

Cross looked at Marco.

"One of your men."

Marco's face hardened.

The third security companion.

Adrian.

A man who had remained mostly invisible throughout the crisis.

He had served Antonio's family for four years.

Isabella's accomplice.

She hadn't hired an outsider.

She had recruited someone already inside.

Adrian had accessed medical information.

He manipulated the meal materials.

He tampered with the medication case.

Cross saw him near the compartment but didn't understand what he'd done until Antonio collapsed.

"Where is Adrian?" Antonio asked.

Marco's expression turned grim.

"Missing."

Police found him hours later attempting to leave Italy.

He confessed after investigators confronted him with communications recovered from Isabella's laptop.

The chain was complete.

No supernatural mastermind.

No endless conspiracy.

Just inherited resentment, secrecy, money, and people convincing themselves that betrayal could repair old betrayal.

Evelyn felt strangely empty when it ended.

For weeks, every answer had created another question.

Now there were no more questions.

Only consequences.

Isabella and Adrian faced prosecution.

Carlo's historic conduct became public through legal proceedings and corporate disclosures.

Sofia resigned from all company involvement.

Antonio ordered an independent audit.

Not a family audit.

Not an internal review.

Independent.

Marco remained beside him, but their relationship changed.

Antonio stopped treating loyalty as silence.

Marco stopped treating questions as disrespect.

Gabriel remained in Rome.

Father and son met for breakfast.

Then lunch.

Then another breakfast.

Small steps.

Thomas visited eventually.

When he met Sofia, neither spoke for almost a minute.

Then Sofia said:

"I'm sorry."

Thomas replied:

"You should be."

It wasn't forgiveness.

But it was truth.

Evelyn returned to New York.

Her life felt impossibly ordinary.

Laundry.

Groceries.

Jet lag.

A broken kitchen faucet.

Then, three weeks later, her schedule arrived.

New York to Rome.

She stared at it.

Her stomach tightened.

She considered trading the trip.

She didn't.

At Kennedy, Evelyn walked through the terminal in uniform.

The gate agent smiled.

"Full flight."

"Of course."

"Business class too."

"Of course."

Evelyn boarded.

She checked equipment.

Reviewed the manifest.

Then stopped.

Seat 2A.

ANTONIO VITELLI.

She laughed despite herself.

When boarding began, Antonio appeared.

Alone.

No Marco.

No security entourage.

Just Antonio carrying one small bag.

Evelyn stood at the door.

"Mr. Vitelli."

"Ms. Foster."

"Traveling alone?"

"Apparently I'm trying something new."

"Brave."

"Marco is on another flight."

"Why?"

"He said I need to learn how normal people travel."

"Marco is wise."

"Don't tell him."

Antonio reached 2A.

He looked at the overhead compartment.

Then at Evelyn.

"No black case."

"Excellent start."

Dinner service began two hours later.

Antonio inspected his napkin.

Evelyn noticed.

He noticed her noticing.

"I'm working on it," he said.

"Take your time."

Later, while the cabin slept, Evelyn brought coffee.

Antonio accepted it.

He drank.

"Progress," she said.

"Extraordinary courage."

She rolled her eyes.

But then Antonio became serious.

"I never asked you something."

"What?"

"Why did you stay involved?"

"I didn't have much choice."

"Later you did."

Evelyn thought about it.

"My father spent most of my life carrying a story he couldn't finish."

Antonio nodded.

"I think I wanted him to be free of it."

"And are you?"

"Almost."

He looked out at the darkness beyond the window.

"So am I."

A call light illuminated behind her.

Evelyn turned.

"Duty calls."

"Evelyn."

She looked back.

"Thank you."

This time, she accepted it.

"You're welcome."

She walked away.

Hours later, the aircraft began descending toward Rome.

Morning sunlight appeared along the horizon.

Antonio remained in 2A.

Breathing normally.

Coffee finished.

No mystery case overhead.

No hidden stranger in 4F.

Evelyn felt something loosen inside her.

Then Marco called her phone.

She couldn't answer during landing.

A message followed.

She glanced at the preview.

I FOUND SOMETHING IN MY FATHER'S OLD FILES.

Her stomach tightened.

Then another message arrived.

IT'S ABOUT YOUR MOTHER.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

Antonio saw her face.

"What is it?"

She slowly turned the phone toward him.

Before either could speak, a third message appeared.

DON'T SHOW ANTONIO UNTIL YOU LAND.

Evelyn looked toward seat 2A.

May you like

Antonio was already watching her.

And the wheels touched down in Rome.
