Chapter 8 - The Door at the End of the Hall

Thomas wasn't in Rome.

The footage was prerecorded.

The timestamp had been altered.

Another manipulation.

Another attempt to create panic.

But this time Isabella made a mistake.

The original file metadata led investigators to a private server.

That server led to a rented office.

And the office led to Isabella.

She was arrested without violence.

Evelyn expected triumph.

There was none.

Isabella looked exhausted.

Young.

Angry.

Broken by a war that began before she was born.

During questioning, she admitted planning the medical incident.

She insisted she never intended anyone else to be harmed.

Evelyn didn't accept the distinction.

"You decided Antonio's life was yours to risk."

Isabella stared at her.

"You don't know this family."

"No. But I know what you did."

Isabella's eyes filled.

"My father destroyed people."

"Then expose him."

"No one listened."

"So you became like him?"

That landed.

Isabella looked away.

The case unfolded from there.

Carlo faced investigation for historic financial crimes where legally actionable.

Sofia provided records.

Gabriel agreed to testify.

Marco began the painful process of rebuilding a relationship with his father.

Not forgiving.

Not yet.

But speaking.

Antonio faced something harder.

His mother.

Lorenzo's final warning had been real.

But Antonio finally explained the context.

His father had discovered Sofia's destruction of evidence.

He felt betrayed.

His warning wasn't proof that Sofia wanted Antonio harmed.

It was the last angry judgment of a dying man.

Antonio had carried it for seven years.

Sofia had carried her guilt for twenty-eight.

They finally spoke without Evelyn present.

When Antonio emerged two hours later, he looked exhausted.

"How bad?"

"Bad."

"And?"

"We're going to try again tomorrow."

That was enough.

Evelyn's airline cleared her to return to work after the investigation released her.

She should have gone home immediately.

Instead, she stayed one extra day.

She told herself it was because Thomas wanted updates.

It wasn't.

Antonio took her to a quiet café.

No security at the table.

Marco waited outside.

"That must be difficult for him," Evelyn said.

"What?"

"Being ten feet away."

Antonio smiled.

"He argued for five."

They drank coffee.

Antonio actually drank his.

Evelyn noticed.

"So," he said, "you've spent two weeks dismantling my family."

"I served you oxygen."

"You did considerably more."

"Against my will."

"Fair."

He became serious.

"I owe you more than gratitude."

"No."

"Evelyn—"

"No money."

"I wasn't offering money."

"Good."

"I was offering an apology."

She softened.

"I'll accept that."

"For bringing danger into your life."

"You didn't choose what Isabella did."

"No. But I chose secrecy afterward."

"Yes."

"I chose to investigate you."

"Yes."

"I was arrogant."

"Very."

He smiled.

"You enjoy this too much."

"A little."

Then he handed her something.

Not jewelry.

Not money.

A folded piece of paper.

Her original crew report from the flight.

At the bottom, Antonio had written:

She noticed when everyone else was looking away.

Evelyn read it twice.

"Why give me this?"

"Because everyone keeps calling you the woman who saved my life."

"You hate that?"

"No."

"Then?"

"It makes it sound like one dramatic moment."

He leaned forward.

"It wasn't. You watched. You questioned. You refused to be intimidated. You kept noticing."

Evelyn folded the paper.

"That's a dangerous compliment to give a flight attendant."

"Why?"

"We'll start believing we're always right."

"You already believe that."

She laughed.

For a few minutes, the mystery disappeared.

There were only two people drinking coffee.

Then Marco entered.

His face erased the moment.

"Antonio."

"What?"

"We have a problem."

Isabella had confessed.

But investigators had found evidence she hadn't created.

The fake catering credential.

The man in 4F.

Isabella claimed she never hired him.

Antonio stood.

"Then who did?"

Marco placed a photograph on the table.

The stranger from the plane.

Investigators had identified him.

His name was Daniel Cross.

Former corporate investigator.

And his most recent employer wasn't Isabella.

It was Sofia Vitelli.

Antonio stared at the photograph.

"No."

Marco's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then looked at Antonio.

"Your mother is gone."

Antonio immediately called her.

No answer.

Evelyn looked toward the café door.

A black car had stopped outside.

The rear door opened.

Sofia stepped out.

She entered alone.

In her hand was an envelope.

She placed it before Antonio.

"I can explain Cross."

Antonio didn't touch the envelope.

"Then explain."

Sofia sat.

"I hired him to protect you."

"By tampering with my flight?"

"No."

"He was investigating Isabella."

"Then why was he on the aircraft?"

"I didn't know he was."

Evelyn opened the envelope.

Inside was Cross's final report.

The last page contained one handwritten note.

ISABELLA HAS AN ACCOMPLICE.

Below it was a name.

Evelyn read it.

Her face changed.

Antonio reached for the page.

Before he could see it, someone knocked on the locked café door.

Three times.

Marco turned.

The person outside raised both hands.

May you like

Daniel Cross was standing there.

And he was supposed to have disappeared.
