Chapter 9 - The Signature in Julian’s Name

“Mom.”

Grace moved forward.

The man behind Linda raised both hands.

It was an FBI agent.

Linda was safe.

Ruiz had secretly moved her after Martin revealed Nathan had issued an order to abduct her.

Grace hugged her mother so tightly Linda laughed through tears.

“You’re squeezing me.”

“I know.”

The relief lasted only seconds.

Julian still had not revealed the inside man.

They moved into the library.

Ruiz arrived.

Then she said the name.

“Charles Bennett.”

Julian’s personal attorney.

Charles had represented the Mercer family for twenty-seven years.

He drafted Julian’s contracts.

Managed estate matters.

Helped process Richard’s will.

And had access to nearly every signature Nathan needed.

Julian looked devastated.

Charles had been more than an attorney.

After Richard died, he became a surrogate father.

Grace finally understood how Nathan forged Julian’s authorizations so convincingly.

Charles possessed legitimate signature files.

Biometric records.

Corporate credentials.

Trust documents.

Everything.

Police went to his home.

Empty.

His office had been wiped.

The wedding was tomorrow.

Ruiz wanted it canceled.

Julian disagreed.

“So does Nathan,” he said.

Grace understood.

Nathan had spent years hiding.

The staged wedding might be their only chance to force him into the open.

Linda surprised everyone.

“Then finish it.”

Grace turned.

“Mom.”

“Your father spent his life teaching you not to be afraid of strength.”

“This isn't a tournament.”

“I know.”

Linda touched her daughter's face.

“That’s why you won't fight alone.”

The wedding morning arrived.

Mercer Hill looked beautiful.

White flowers.

Music.

Rows of chairs.

But beneath the elegance were federal agents, undercover officers, cameras, and tactical teams.

Most genuine guests had quietly been told the ceremony was postponed.

Actors and officers filled many seats.

Victoria wore her ivory gown.

She looked exactly like the woman from the original wedding plans.

Beautiful.

Controlled.

Terrified.

Julian wore a black tuxedo.

Grace wore her service uniform by choice.

Julian questioned it.

“Nathan expects the maid.”

“Then give him the maid.”

She hid a communications device beneath her collar.

The ceremony began.

Victoria walked down the aisle.

Julian waited.

Grace stood near the ballroom doors.

No Nathan.

No Charles.

The officiant began.

Minutes passed.

Then Grace saw him.

Not Nathan.

Charles Bennett.

He sat in the back row.

He had entered disguised as an elderly guest.

Grace whispered into her microphone.

“Bennett. Rear left.”

Agents moved subtly.

Charles noticed.

He stood.

Then shouted:

“Julian!”

Everyone froze.

Charles held no weapon.

He held a phone.

“Your brother wants to talk.”

The ballroom speakers suddenly activated.

Nathan’s voice filled the room.

“Hello, little brother.”

Julian’s face tightened.

“Nathan.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

Grace scanned the room.

Nathan was watching.

But from where?

“You always did get everything,” Nathan said through the speakers. “The company. Father’s respect. Mother’s love.”

“You chose this.”

“I chose survival.”

“No. You chose revenge.”

Nathan laughed.

Then every chandelier went dark.

Emergency lighting flashed red.

Guests screamed despite knowing parts of the operation.

Gunshots sounded outside.

Grace moved toward Linda’s protected position.

Julian remained near Victoria.

The ballroom doors locked automatically.

Someone had hacked the security system.

Grace heard glass breaking upstairs.

Then her earpiece went dead.

Nathan had not come through the front.

He had been inside before the ceremony began.

Grace remembered the hidden archive.

The tunnels.

She ran.

Beneath the staircase, the concealed basement entrance stood open.

A figure disappeared below.

Grace followed.

She reached the archive.

Empty.

Another door stood open at the rear.

A passage continued beneath the estate.

Grace entered.

At the end, she heard voices.

Victoria.

Julian.

Nathan.

Grace rounded the corner.

Nathan Mercer stood there holding a gun.

Julian was on his knees.

Victoria stood beside him.

Nathan smiled at Grace.

“Daniel’s daughter.”

Grace stopped.

Nathan pressed the gun against Julian’s head.

Then Victoria stepped toward Nathan.

“You promised me one thing.”

Nathan laughed.

“And you believed me?”

Victoria looked at Grace.

For the first time, there was no arrogance in her face.

Only decision.

She reached slowly behind her wedding dress.

Grace realized she was holding something.

Nathan noticed too.

His gun swung toward Victoria.

May you like

Victoria pulled her hand free.

And Grace saw what she had hidden...
