Chapter 11 - The Room Beneath Mercer Hill

Martin Shaw.
Grace stepped backward.
Martin raised his hands.
“I’m not armed.”
Grace did not believe him.
“You’re supposed to be in protective custody.”
“I left.”
“Why?”
“Because Nathan isn't finished.”
Grace kept the table between them.
Charles remained on the phone.
“Grace?”
She ended the call without answering.
Martin looked exhausted.
He explained that Charles had indeed worked with Nathan, but later tried to escape.
Nathan controlled him through threats against his family.
Martin had been Nathan’s financial operator.
Victoria became the public infiltrator.
Damon handled intimidation.
But none of them was the final contingency.
Nathan had hidden control mechanisms inside Mercer Harbor itself.
Automated transfers.
False debt triggers.
Blackmail files.
If Nathan was arrested, they would activate.
“When?” Grace asked.
“Midnight.”
Less than six hours.
Julian arrived with Ruiz.
Martin surrendered.
Then the race began.
Mercer Harbor’s cybersecurity teams isolated systems.
Banks froze suspicious accounts.
Federal investigators traced automated instructions.
Grace’s temporary trustee authority became crucial.
Certain emergency actions required authorization from the trust.
Nathan had tried to kill the one person capable of stopping his financial deadman switch.
Grace signed.
Not blindly.
She read every page.
Julian waited.
At 11:47 p.m., the final transfer was blocked.
More than $600 million in company assets remained protected.
Nathan’s empire of leverage collapsed.
Then investigators found the blackmail archive.
Employees.
Politicians.
Business executives.
Victoria.
Martin.
Charles.
Even Eleanor.
Nathan had spent years collecting people’s worst moments and turning them into chains.
Grace ordered copies preserved as evidence and access restricted.
She refused to use them.
Julian noticed.
“You could control half the people who tried to destroy you.”
“That would make me Nathan.”
Midnight passed.
Nothing happened.
For the first time, Nathan had no hidden move.
Or so they thought.
At 12:08, Ruiz received a call.
Nathan Mercer had escaped during a medical transfer.
Grace’s blood chilled.
“How?”
An ambulance had been intercepted.
Two guards injured.
Nathan gone.
Ruiz immediately locked down Mercer Hill.
Linda was moved.
Eleanor was protected.
Julian refused to hide.
Grace understood why.
Nathan’s entire life had become a competition with his younger brother.
He would come back.
At 2:30 a.m., power failed.
Backup generators activated.
Then one section remained dark.
The ballroom.
Grace walked toward it.
“Grace,” Julian said, “wait.”
She did.
That mattered.
The old Grace might have gone alone because she believed carrying burdens alone made her strong.
Now she understood better.
Ruiz and agents moved with them.
They entered.
The chandeliers were dark.
Moonlight crossed the marble.
In the center of the ballroom lay Grace’s old silver service case.
The same case she dropped the night everything began.
She approached cautiously.
Inside was Daniel’s state championship medal.
Grace had kept it under her bed.
Nathan had entered her apartment.
Beneath it was a note.
YOU TOOK MY NAME.
I’LL TAKE HIS.
Julian read it.
“He means me.”
A sound came from upstairs.
Grace looked toward the sweeping staircase.
A bedroom door closed.
Agents moved.
Grace saw something they missed.
A reflection in the marble.
Someone was beneath the stairs.
“Nathan!”
He emerged with a knife.
Not toward Julian.
Toward Grace.
She pivoted.
His blade missed her side.
Julian struck Nathan from behind.
The knife skidded away.
Nathan punched Julian.
Grace drove him backward.
Agents surrounded them.
Nathan grabbed the fallen knife again.
Then a woman’s voice came from the staircase.
“Nathan.”
He froze.
Eleanor Mercer stood there.
His mother.
Nathan stared upward as if seeing a ghost.
Eleanor descended one step.
“You wanted my attention your whole life.”
Nathan's hand trembled.
“You chose him.”
“No.”
She looked at Julian.
“Your father and I chose to stop protecting you from consequences.”
Nathan’s face twisted.
He moved toward her.
Agents raised weapons.
Grace shouted:
“Drop it!”
Nathan looked at his mother.
Then at Julian.
Then Grace.
His fingers opened.
The knife hit the floor.
Agents rushed him.
This time they placed him in restraints designed for transport under federal tactical guard.
Nathan looked back at Grace.
“You think this family will thank you?”
Grace said nothing.
“You're still the maid.”
Grace finally answered.
“Yes.”
Nathan smiled.
Then Grace added:
“And you still lost to me.”
He was taken away.
Hours later, sunrise entered the ballroom.
Julian stood beside Grace.
“It’s over.”
Ruiz approached before Grace could answer.
“No.”
She held a newly recovered file.
“There’s something you both need to see.”
The file came from Nathan’s blackmail archive.
Its title was LINDA MILLER.
Grace’s heart stopped.
Ruiz opened it.
The first document concerned the night Daniel died.
The second contained Linda’s signature.
And according to Nathan’s records, Grace’s mother had known the truth for eight years.
Grace looked toward the hallway.
Linda was standing there.
She had heard everything.
May you like
Then she said:
“Grace, there’s something about your father I never told you.”
