Chapter 3 - The Woman They Thought Was Powerless

Luca drew his weapon.
Vincenzo held up one hand.
"Wait."
The front door opened three inches.
Then stopped.
A figure stood on the other side.
Not Victor Dane.
Dr. Preston Hale.
His expensive coat was wet with sweat despite the cool night.
"Please," he said. "Let me in."
Vincenzo stared at him.
"You have ten seconds to explain why you possess a key to my home."
Hale's face collapsed.
"They're going to kill my career."
"That isn't an explanation."
"I can prove what happened."
Vincenzo opened the door just enough for Hale to enter.
Luca searched him.
No weapon.
Only a phone and flash drive.
Isabella stepped forward.
"You idiot."
Hale looked at her.
"Don't."
"What did you do?"
"What you should have done days ago."
Vincenzo pointed toward the sitting room.
"Inside."
Hale obeyed.
Emma remained near the staircase.
Vincenzo glanced at her.
"Stay upstairs."
"No."
He frowned.
She swallowed.
"They're threatening me because of whatever happened. I think I deserve to hear it."
Something shifted in his eyes.
Respect.
"Fine."
They entered the sitting room.
Hale sat.
Nobody else did.
Vincenzo stood over him.
"Start."
Hale rubbed both hands over his face.
"Victor Dane approached me four months ago."
"Why?"
"Because I owed money."
"How much?"
"Enough."
"To whom?"
Hale looked down.
Vincenzo understood.
Gambling.
Private debts.
Bad decisions.
Victor had found leverage.
"He offered to clear everything," Hale continued. "All I had to do was consult on Sofia's rehabilitation."
Emma stared.
"Consult?"
Hale looked ashamed.
"Delay progress."
The room went silent.
Emma's voice shook.
"You discouraged her on purpose?"
"I never physically harmed her."
"That's your defense?"
"No."
"You told a two-year-old she wasn't trying."
"I know."
"You made her afraid of standing."
"I know."
Emma's eyes filled.
Hale looked away.
Vincenzo spoke quietly.
"Keep going."
Hale swallowed.
"Victor needed a permanent-care classification before the end of the quarter. Your mother and sister were going to use the revised trust structure to secure financing."
Isabella scoffed.
"This is nonsense."
Hale looked at her.
"You signed it."
"You forged documents."
"No."
Hale placed the flash drive on the table.
"Everything is there."
Bianca backed away.
"Mother."
Isabella's composure cracked.
"You pathetic coward."
Hale laughed bitterly.
"Maybe. But I'm not going to prison for you."
Vincenzo's expression became cold.
"Prison?"
Hale nodded.
"The trust documents aren't the worst part."
Luca inserted the drive into an isolated laptop.
Folders appeared.
Contracts.
Audio recordings.
Bank transfers.
Medical reports.
Then a folder labeled EB.
Emma saw her initials.
"What is that?"
Hale looked at her.
"I don't know."
Luca opened it.
Photographs appeared.
Emma grocery shopping.
Emma boarding a bus.
Emma visiting a small cemetery.
Emma sitting in a diner.
Someone had followed her for weeks.
She stepped backward.
Vincenzo's hand immediately touched her elbow.
Steadying.
Not possessive.
Protective.
"Why?" she whispered.
Hale shook his head.
"Victor became interested in you after he realized Sofia trusted you."
"Interested how?"
"At first he wanted you fired."
Bianca closed her eyes.
Emma looked at her.
"You."
Bianca remained silent.
"You threatened me because Victor told you to?"
"I was trying to protect the deal."
"The deal involving a toddler?"
Bianca snapped, "You don't understand what was at stake."
Emma stared at her.
"No. I understand exactly."
Bianca's face reddened.
"You came into this house with nothing."
Vincenzo's gaze hardened.
"Enough."
But Emma surprised everyone.
"No."
She stepped forward.
"For eighteen months, I cooked when your daughters refused to eat. I cleaned up after them when they were sick. I slept outside Sofia's room when she was afraid of thunder. I listened while people with money spoke about me like furniture."
Bianca opened her mouth.
Emma continued.
"I did not come here with nothing."
Her voice trembled.
"I came with dignity."
Nobody spoke.
Even Isabella looked away.
Hale cleared his throat.
"There's another reason Victor focused on Emma."
Vincenzo turned.
"What?"
Hale pointed at the screen.
"Open the last document."
Luca clicked.
A scanned newspaper clipping appeared.
Twenty-four years old.
BROOKS ACCOUNTANT TESTIFIES IN DANE FRAUD CASE.
Emma's face changed.
"My father."
Vincenzo looked at her.
"Your father knew Victor?"
Emma stepped closer to the screen.
The article showed a younger man.
Daniel Brooks.
Her father.
She had been six when he died.
Her mother had always said it was a car accident.
According to the clipping, Daniel Brooks had worked as a forensic accountant for a logistics company later absorbed by Victor Dane.
He had uncovered hidden accounts.
He had testified.
Then the investigation collapsed after evidence disappeared.
Three months later, Daniel Brooks died.
Emma's hands went cold.
"No."
Hale said softly, "Victor remembered your surname."
"I was a child."
"He doesn't believe in coincidences."
Vincenzo looked at the photograph.
Then at Emma.
"Did your father leave anything?"
"No."
"Think."
She shook her head.
"We moved after he died."
"Documents?"
"No."
"Safe deposit box?"
"I don't know."
"Jewelry?"
Emma frowned.
"My mother gave me his watch."
"Where?"
"In my apartment."
Luca and Vincenzo exchanged a glance.
Emma understood.
"No."
Vincenzo stepped toward her.
"You can't go there alone."
"It's my home."
"Which means they know exactly where it is."
"I need that watch."
"We'll get it."
"We?"
He looked at her.
"Yes."
She stared at the tattoos disappearing beneath his shirt.
At the hard expression everyone feared.
At the man who had just discovered his own mother had used his daughter as collateral.
For the first time she saw something beneath the reputation.
A father who was terrified.
"I don't want anyone hurt because of me."
Vincenzo's voice softened.
"This started long before you."
"But now it's about me."
"No."
He looked toward the monitor showing Sofia walking.
"Now it's about all of us."
The words lingered.
Isabella scoffed.
"Don't be ridiculous."
Vincenzo turned.
"What?"
"You've known this woman eighteen months."
Emma stiffened.
Isabella continued.
"You're behaving as though she's family."
Vincenzo's gaze moved toward Emma.
Something unreadable passed through his face.
Then he looked back at his mother.
"She protected my daughter when her actual family didn't."
Isabella recoiled.
"How dare you."
"Very easily."
Bianca stepped between them.
"We can still fix this."
Vincenzo laughed.
"You mean hide it."
"No."
"What would you call it?"
"Contain it."
"There it is."
He looked at Luca.
"Send copies of everything to Salvatore."
Salvatore Greco was the family's attorney.
Bianca paled.
"Vincenzo."
"And to an outside firm."
"Stop."
"And arrange independent audits of every trust and holding company Mother or Bianca touched."
Isabella's face turned white.
"You would destroy your own family."
Vincenzo looked at Sofia's walker visible through the open doorway.
"No."
"You are."
"You did that yourselves."
Emma watched him.
The title people gave Vincenzo whispered in dark restaurants and city offices suddenly felt strange.
Mafia boss.
Crime heir.
Monster.
But he was choosing accountants, attorneys, auditors, court filings.
Not guns.
Maybe that was the point.
Power did not need violence to be frightening.
Sometimes it only needed evidence.
Luca's phone buzzed.
"The vehicles outside are leaving."
"Victor?"
"Gone."
"Why?"
Hale answered.
"Because he got what he wanted."
Everyone turned.
"What?"
"The distraction."
Vincenzo's face sharpened.
Luca checked the security system.
Then cursed.
"Garage camera went down six minutes ago."
Vincenzo moved.
Emma followed.
They reached the service corridor.
A door was open.
Emma's staff locker had been forced.
Her handbag lay on the floor.
Contents scattered.
Wallet.
Keys.
Hairbrush.
A small notebook.
But one item was missing.
She knew instantly.
"My apartment key."
Luca looked at her.
Emma whispered, "They went for my father's watch."
Vincenzo grabbed his coat.
"Stay here."
Emma stepped in front of him.
"No."
"Emma."
"It's my father."
"It could be a trap."
"Then don't ask me to sit upstairs while strangers tear apart the only things I have left of him."
His jaw tightened.
For several seconds they stared at each other.
Then Vincenzo handed her a coat.
"Stay beside me."
They took a black SUV.
Luca drove.
Two security vehicles followed.
Emma sat beside Vincenzo in the rear.
Neither spoke.
At a red light, she noticed his hands.
One was clenched.
She touched his wrist before thinking.
He looked down.
She removed her hand.
"Sorry."
"Don't be."
She stared out the window.
"My father used to tell me that frightened people sometimes become cruel because cruelty makes them feel powerful."
Vincenzo leaned back.
"Smart man."
"I wish I remembered more."
"You were six."
"I remember his hands."
"His hands?"
"They always smelled like printer ink."
Vincenzo smiled faintly.
"My father's smelled like cigars."
"Good memory?"
"No."
She looked at him.
He did not explain.
They reached her building.
The front door was broken.
Emma's stomach dropped.
They climbed three flights.
Her apartment door stood open.
Vincenzo stopped her.
"Behind me."
She obeyed this time.
Luca entered first.
Clear.
Emma stepped inside.
Every drawer had been emptied.
Books scattered.
Mattress cut.
Closet destroyed.
Family photographs smashed.
She covered her mouth.
Vincenzo watched her expression change.
"I'm sorry."
She crossed to a wooden box beside the bed.
Empty.
"The watch."
Gone.
Then she saw something beneath the overturned dresser.
A photograph.
Her father holding her as a baby.
She picked it up.
On the back was handwriting she did not recognize.
Vincenzo read over her shoulder.
IF THEY COME FOR THE WATCH, FIND THE BLUE HOUSE.
Emma frowned.
"The blue house?"
"Does that mean anything?"
She stared at the photograph.
Then her eyes widened.
"My grandmother."
"What?"
"When I was little, she lived in a blue house."
"Where?"
"Outside Albany."
Luca checked the hallway.
"We need to leave."
Emma slipped the photograph into her pocket.
Then a floorboard creaked behind the bedroom wall.
Everyone froze.
Vincenzo turned.
There should not have been space behind that wall.
Luca approached it.
A section of paneling had been pulled loose.
Behind it was a narrow hidden cavity.
And inside that cavity sat a black metal box.
Emma stared.
"I've never seen that."
Vincenzo crouched.
The box had one word scratched into the lid.
DANIEL.
Emma reached toward it.
Then Luca grabbed her wrist.
May you like
"Don't."
A tiny red light had just begun blinking.
