Chapter 2 - The Men at the Gate

The ribbon landed soundlessly.
Vincenzo noticed anyway.
Emma's entire body had stiffened.
"Who is outside?" he asked.
Luca did not take his eyes from the screen.
"Victor Dane."
Vincenzo's expression hardened.
Bianca cursed under her breath.
Emma looked toward the monitor.
"Who is Victor Dane?"
Nobody answered immediately.
That frightened her more.
Vincenzo moved between Emma and the door.
"Take Sofia and Mia upstairs."
Emma stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because I'm asking you."
His tone was controlled, not harsh.
Emma hesitated.
Then she nodded.
She turned toward the living room, where Sofia and Mia were still playing.
Bianca blocked her.
"We need to talk first."
Vincenzo stepped forward.
"Move."
Bianca looked at him.
For the first time that evening, she obeyed without argument.
Emma hurried to the girls.
Vincenzo watched until all three disappeared upstairs.
Only then did he look at Luca.
"How many?"
"Nine visible."
"Armed?"
"Probably."
"How did they get through the outer checkpoint?"
Luca's jaw tightened.
"I'm finding out."
Vincenzo turned to Bianca.
"You know why he's here."
"No."
"Bad answer."
"I don't."
"Then why did you recognize the plate?"
Bianca looked away.
Vincenzo stepped closer.
"Did you invite him?"
"Of course not."
"Did Mother?"
"No."
"Did Hale?"
Bianca's eyes flickered.
There.
Vincenzo caught it.
"Dr. Hale knows Victor Dane?"
"I didn't say that."
"You didn't have to."
The gate intercom rang.
Luca reached for it.
Vincenzo stopped him.
"No."
He pressed the button himself.
"State your business."
A calm male voice answered.
"Family business."
"This isn't your family."
"It almost was."
Bianca closed her eyes.
Vincenzo looked at her.
The voice continued.
"Open the gate, Moretti."
"No."
A pause.
Then Victor laughed.
"You should ask your sister what she promised me."
The intercom disconnected.
Vincenzo stared at Bianca.
"What did you promise?"
She swallowed.
"It was complicated."
"Make it simple."
Bianca moved toward the desk.
"Our family has problems you don't know about."
Vincenzo almost smiled.
"My family has problems I don't know about?"
"You've been focused on Sofia."
"She's my daughter."
"And while you were focused on her, contracts collapsed. Two warehouses were investigated. Three of our freight clients walked."
"My businesses are my concern."
"They became everyone's concern."
Vincenzo's legitimate holdings included shipping, construction, restaurants, and commercial real estate.
His darker reputation came from the generation before him.
His father had been feared.
His grandfather even more.
Vincenzo had spent years moving the family toward businesses that could survive daylight.
Some relatives resented him for it.
Apparently more than he knew.
Bianca exhaled.
"Mother and I needed liquidity."
"From Victor?"
"It was temporary."
"How much?"
Silence.
"Bianca."
"Eight million."
Luca looked up sharply.
Vincenzo stared at her.
"You borrowed eight million dollars without telling me?"
"It wasn't a loan exactly."
"What was it?"
"A partnership."
"In what?"
Bianca said nothing.
Vincenzo's voice dropped.
"In what?"
"The North Harbor redevelopment."
His face changed.
That property belonged to a holding company protecting Sofia and Mia's inheritance.
Vincenzo had refused every offer to develop it.
"You touched the girls' trust?"
"We didn't touch it."
"You used it as collateral."
Bianca looked away.
Vincenzo understood.
For a moment he could not speak.
Then another thought hit him.
"Hale."
Bianca's eyes snapped back.
"What about him?"
"Why is he involved?"
"He isn't."
"Stop lying."
Luca turned from the security feed.
"Boss, I found something."
He rotated the monitor.
An access log showed a temporary visitor authorization issued three weeks earlier.
Name: Preston Hale.
Sponsor: Bianca Moretti.
Secondary access: Victor Dane Holdings.
Vincenzo looked at Bianca.
She seemed suddenly smaller.
"Explain."
Bianca rubbed her forehead.
"Victor recommended Hale."
"Why?"
"He said Hale had connections."
"Connections to what?"
"Private clinics. Disability foundations. Investors."
Vincenzo's stomach turned.
"What investors care whether my daughter can walk?"
Bianca froze.
That was all the answer he needed.
He turned to Luca.
"Dig into Hale."
"Already started."
Upstairs, Emma closed Sofia's bedroom door.
Mia climbed onto the bed.
"Are bad men here?"
Emma crouched.
"No, sweetheart."
It was a lie.
She could tell by Vincenzo's face.
Sofia gripped her sleeve.
"Daddy mad?"
"Your daddy is handling something."
"At you?"
Emma's heart tightened.
"No."
Sofia studied her.
Children always knew more than adults believed.
"You scared."
Emma smiled.
"A little."
Sofia touched Emma's cheek.
"Don't be scared."
Emma almost cried.
Instead she kissed Sofia's palm.
"Deal."
She tucked both girls under the blanket.
Then she heard footsteps.
Heavy.
Fast.
She stood.
The door opened.
Vincenzo entered.
He was alone.
"Girls stay here."
Emma nodded.
"Of course."
He looked at her.
"You come with me."
Her stomach dropped.
"Why?"
"Because I need the truth."
She followed him into a smaller sitting room across the hall.
Luca was waiting with a tablet.
Vincenzo closed the door.
"Victor Dane knows your name."
Emma blinked.
"What?"
"He asked for you."
Her face emptied of color.
"I've never met him."
"I believe you."
She looked surprised.
That hurt him more than he expected.
"You believe me?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I watched you with my daughter."
Emma frowned.
"That doesn't mean I can't lie."
"No. But frightened people lie differently."
She stared at him.
He almost apologized for the strange compliment.
Instead he gestured toward Luca.
Luca displayed a photograph.
Victor Dane.
Mid-fifties.
Silver hair.
Expensive suit.
Cold eyes.
Emma shook her head.
"I don't know him."
Another photo.
Dr. Hale entering Victor's corporate office.
Emma's expression changed.
Vincenzo saw it.
"What?"
"I've seen that building."
"When?"
"Last month."
"Why?"
Emma hesitated.
"Because Dr. Hale asked me to deliver an envelope."
"From here?"
"Yes."
"Who gave it to you?"
She thought.
"Your mother."
Vincenzo's jaw tightened.
"What happened?"
"I took a car there. A man downstairs signed for it."
"What was in the envelope?"
"I don't know."
"You didn't open it?"
Emma looked offended.
"No."
"Good."
Luca swiped again.
A scanned document appeared.
An insurance agreement.
Sofia Moretti.
Projected lifetime care requirements.
Associated disability trust restructuring.
Vincenzo read the numbers.
Then read them again.
His blood went cold.
The document assumed Sofia would never walk independently.
If her condition were classified permanently severe, a specific restructuring clause would activate.
Control over a significant portion of her trust would move to a management board.
Three board members were listed.
Isabella Moretti.
Bianca Moretti.
Victor Dane.
Emma covered her mouth.
Vincenzo did not speak.
Luca said quietly, "There's more."
A second document showed a private investment proposal tied directly to Sofia's classification.
North Harbor redevelopment.
The collateral was not technically Sofia's trust.
It was the future management rights attached to it.
Vincenzo looked at the dates.
Hale had been hired four days before the paperwork was drafted.
"That specialist wasn't helping Sofia," Emma whispered.
Vincenzo's eyes darkened.
"He needed her not to improve."
Emma sat down hard.
The morning came back to her.
Hale discouraging Sofia.
Hale insisting she was emotionally dependent.
Hale refusing to let Emma stay.
Hale recommending reduced mobility exercises.
Hale calling progress "unrealistic."
Emma felt sick.
"I thought he was arrogant."
Vincenzo looked at her.
"So did I."
"Your mother knew?"
He did not answer.
He could not.
Downstairs, the intercom rang again.
This time Victor's voice echoed through the house speakers.
"Moretti. Five minutes."
Vincenzo turned toward the door.
Emma stood.
"Don't go."
He looked back.
The words had escaped her.
She flushed.
"I mean—there are nine men."
A faint smile touched his face.
"You think I'm going outside?"
"What are you going to do?"
"Something my father never taught me."
"What?"
"Use lawyers."
Despite everything, Emma nearly laughed.
Then a crashing sound came from downstairs.
Luca's hand went to the weapon under his jacket.
Vincenzo's face sharpened.
"Stay with the girls."
Emma nodded.
Vincenzo and Luca left.
She locked the door.
Downstairs, Bianca stood in the foyer.
Isabella had joined her.
The older woman looked furious.
"What have you done?" Vincenzo asked.
Isabella straightened.
"I saved this family."
"You sold my daughter's future."
"Don't be dramatic."
"You hired a doctor whose financial interest depended on Sofia remaining disabled."
Isabella's face barely changed.
"That's an absurd accusation."
"I have the documents."
Bianca whispered, "Mother."
Isabella shot her a look.
Vincenzo saw it.
Then the front doors shook.
Someone outside struck them.
Once.
Twice.
Luca's radio crackled.
"Outer security breached."
Vincenzo remained calm.
"Lock interior zones."
Then Isabella said something that made him turn.
"You can't keep Emma here."
His gaze settled on his mother.
"Why did you say her name?"
Isabella's lips parted.
Too late.
Vincenzo stepped closer.
"Victor came here asking for Emma."
Silence.
"You know why."
Isabella's composure finally fractured.
"She found something."
Emma, upstairs, had slipped into the hallway after hearing the impact.
She stood above the staircase.
Vincenzo saw her.
"What did she find?"
Isabella looked at Emma.
Emma shook her head.
"I don't know."
Isabella laughed bitterly.
"The envelope."
Emma froze.
"The envelope?"
"You opened it."
"No."
"You must have."
"I didn't."
Isabella pointed toward her.
"Then how did a copy disappear?"
Emma stared.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
A phone began ringing.
Not Vincenzo's.
Not Luca's.
Emma's.
Everyone looked at her.
She slowly pulled it from her apron pocket.
Unknown number.
Vincenzo nodded.
"Answer."
Emma pressed the button.
"Hello?"
A man's voice spoke.
Calm.
Pleasant.
Terrifying.
"Emma Brooks?"
She swallowed.
"Yes."
"You have something that belongs to me."
"I don't."
"Oh, you do."
Vincenzo held out his hand for the phone.
But the voice continued.
"Check your coat pocket."
Emma stopped.
Her coat was hanging in the staff entrance downstairs.
Luca moved first.
They all followed.
He retrieved the coat.
Vincenzo checked the right pocket.
Nothing.
Left pocket.
His fingers closed around paper.
He pulled out a sealed black envelope.
Emma stared.
"I've never seen that."
Vincenzo opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Emma leaving the mansion.
Taken from across the street.
On the back, one sentence had been written.
SHE SAW TOO MUCH.
Beneath it was tomorrow's date.
And a time.
9:00 A.M.
Vincenzo lifted his eyes.
May you like
Then the front door unlocked from the outside.
Someone had a key.
