Chapter 14 - The Man Gideon Trusted Most

Arthur did not run.

He sat down.

“It's true.”

Gideon's face became unreadable.

Norah waited.

Arthur had been nine years old when Elaine died.

The note could not mean he had planned the bombing.

Arthur explained.

Elaine had discovered Malcolm intended to use his son someday.

She feared Arthur would inherit his father's loyalty network.

Her warning was about the future.

And she had been right in one way.

Arthur had hidden things.

He knew Malcolm might be alive.

Years earlier, he found evidence.

He buried it because he couldn't accept that his father had abandoned him voluntarily.

When Gideon became ill, Arthur suspected Malcolm.

But he said nothing until he had proof.

“You let me lie in that bed,” Gideon said.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“Everyone who nearly killed me says that.”

Arthur lowered his head.

“I know.”

Gideon could forgive many things.

Broken trust was harder.

Arthur offered his resignation.

Gideon accepted it.

Norah was surprised.

Later she asked why.

“Because trust without consequences isn't trust.”

“Will you ever forgive him?”

“Maybe.”

“Will you take him back?”

“That's different.”

Arthur left the estate.

Not as an enemy.

Not yet as a friend.

Dominic remained.

He and Sofia prepared for their child.

Samuel entered a plea agreement.

Thomas did too.

Gideon began transferring legitimate companies into transparent management structures while cooperating with investigations into the criminal network he had inherited and expanded.

It cost him money.

Power.

Friends.

He did it anyway.

Norah went to her nursing-school interview.

She wore the only professional dress she owned.

Gideon waited outside in the car.

“You didn't have to come.”

“I know.”

“You have meetings.”

“I canceled one.”

“Why?”

He looked at her.

“Because nobody waited outside for you the first time.”

Norah couldn't answer.

She entered the building.

An hour later, she returned.

“Well?”

“I think I got in.”

“You think?”

“I got in.”

Gideon's smile was different now.

No calculation.

No danger.

Just pride.

Norah realized something that frightened her more than armed men ever had.

She loved him.

Not the name.

Not the money.

Not the man people feared.

The stubborn patient who hated being told to sit down.

The man learning that protecting someone did not mean controlling them.

She said nothing.

That evening Gideon received a final package from federal investigators.

Recovered evidence from Malcolm's storage facility.

Inside was Elaine Blake’s purse.

Norah touched it carefully.

Twenty years.

A photograph remained inside.

Elaine holding six-year-old Norah.

Behind them stood teenage Gideon.

He had been there.

Neither remembered.

On the back Elaine had written:

Two stubborn children. Maybe someday they'll save each other.

Norah began crying.

Gideon reached for her hand.

Then a security alarm sounded.

Dominic rushed in.

“Gideon.”

Arthur had returned to the gate.

May you like

He was bleeding.

And he was carrying evidence that one final member of Malcolm's network was coming to the estate that night.
