Chapter 12 - Twelve Doctors, One Liar

Hart lowered the gun.

"It's not mine."

Blood ran down her sleeve.

"Whose?"

"The man who tried to take this."

She held up the drive.

Rafael searched the hallway.

A wounded attacker had escaped through a window.

Hart sat.

Norah took the drive.

"What did my mother leave?"

"Proof."

"Of what?"

"Everything."

The files were encrypted.

But Evelyn had left the password somewhere obvious.

Norah found it.

Two names.

NORAHNATALIE.

The drive opened.

Records filled the screen.

Anthony's payments.

Soren's network.

Samuel's research.

The attempt on Elena Wolf.

The attack on Gabriel.

And Evelyn's own investigation.

One video remained.

Norah opened it.

Her mother appeared.

"If my daughters ever see this, I'm sorry."

Norah began crying silently.

"I separated you because Anthony knew I had children. Samuel took Natalie. I kept Norah. It was the only way to make sure at least one of you survived."

Natalie took Norah's hand.

Evelyn continued.

"I hope one day you find each other."

Norah squeezed her sister's fingers.

"And Gideon, if you're watching..."

Gideon looked up.

"Your mother died trying to protect you and Gabriel. Do not let the men who destroyed your family convince you that power requires becoming like them."

Gideon closed his eyes.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Hart explained the rest.

She had known Evelyn.

She had spent years collecting evidence.

When Gideon became sick, she realized the old poisoning method had returned.

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Because I didn't know who I could trust."

Gideon almost laughed.

"Seems contagious."

The final laboratory results arrived that afternoon.

They identified every compound.

Treatment began immediately.

Gideon's prognosis changed.

Not hours.

Not days.

Recovery.

Weeks, perhaps months.

But recovery.

Norah sat beside his bed that evening.

He drank water.

She inspected the seal first.

He noticed.

"Still checking?"

"Forever."

"Good."

He handed the bottle to her.

"You drink first."

She laughed.

Then Gideon became serious.

"When this is over, you should leave."

Her smile disappeared.

"Excuse me?"

"You've almost been killed three times."

"Four."

"That's not helping."

"You don't decide my life."

"I know."

"Do you?"

He looked at her.

"I'm trying to protect you."

"So was my mother."

That stopped him.

Norah leaned closer.

"Protection without choice is still control."

Gideon absorbed that.

Then nodded.

"You're right."

She blinked.

"That was surprisingly easy."

"Don't get used to it."

A knock sounded.

Gabriel entered.

The brothers stared at each other.

Their reconciliation would not happen quickly.

Perhaps it never could happen completely.

Gabriel had poisoned Gideon.

Manipulated his household.

Put lives at risk.

Truth did not erase responsibility.

"I'll testify," Gabriel said.

Gideon looked at him.

"Against Anthony?"

"Against everyone. Including myself."

Norah respected that.

Gideon didn't forgive him.

But he nodded.

It was a beginning.

Rafael entered next.

"We found Mercer."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"And?"

"He wants protection."

"From Anthony?"

Rafael shook his head.

"From Samuel."

Everyone turned toward Vale.

Samuel frowned.

"Why me?"

Rafael held up Mercer's phone.

"Because Mercer says the person who ordered the final IV replacement wasn't Anthony."

Gideon's eyes narrowed.

"Who was it?"

Rafael looked at Samuel.

"Your account sent the instruction."

Samuel went pale.

"I didn't."

Norah felt the familiar chill.

Another frame.

Another false trail.

Another person being used.

Then Hart whispered:

"Unless someone has been impersonating Samuel for years."

Gideon looked toward the computer.

Rafael opened the message metadata.

The sender wasn't remote.

It had originated inside the estate.

From a room only six people could access.

Gideon's private study.

They ran upstairs.

The door was closed.

Light showed beneath it.

Gideon reached for the handle.

It turned before he touched it.

May you like

The door opened from the inside.

And the man standing there had Gideon's face.
