Chapter 4 - The Name Hidden Beneath the Thread

The apartment door was still open.
Nobody had touched it.
Nobody had entered.
But someone was standing on the other side.
Sadi stared at the dark hallway outside her apartment.
The note in her hand trembled.
“Trust no Falcone.”
Those four words had been written by her mother.
The woman who had spent her entire life protecting her.
The woman who had warned her about dangerous people.
The woman who had died before she could explain why.
And now, after all these years, her warning was pointing directly at the man who was trying to save her.
Gabriel Falcone.
Carmine immediately stepped in front of Sadi.
The security team raised their weapons.
Nobody spoke.
The hallway lights flickered above them.
Then footsteps moved closer.
Slow.
Heavy.
Confident.
Not the footsteps of someone trying to hide.
The footsteps of someone who wanted to be found.
Carmine looked toward the end of the hallway.
“Show yourself.”
No answer.
Only silence.
Then a man appeared.
Older.
Tired.
Wearing a dark coat that looked like it had survived too many winters.
His hair was gray at the sides.
His face carried scars.
But his eyes were what made everyone stop.
Because Gabriel knew those eyes.
Even through the phone screen.
Even after ten years.
Even after believing he had watched that man die.
“Impossible.”
Gabriel whispered.
Carmine turned toward the screen.
“Boss?”
Gabriel did not respond.
The man in the hallway looked directly at the camera.
And smiled.
Not happily.
Sadly.
Like someone who had spent years waiting for this exact moment.
“Hello, Gabriel.”
The room on Gabriel’s side went silent.
Because the voice confirmed what everyone feared.
The dead man was alive.
Sadi looked between the screen and Carmine.
“Who is he?”
Nobody answered.
Because Gabriel was the only person who could.
Finally, he spoke.
“Adrian Voss.”
The name hit Carmine like a weapon.
His face changed.
“That’s impossible.”
Gabriel stared at the screen.
“Everyone thought he died.”
Adrian stepped closer to Sadi’s apartment.
“And everyone was wrong.”
Carmine immediately gave an order.
“Secure the building.”
The guards moved.
But Gabriel stopped him.
“No.”
Carmine looked confused.
“Boss?”
“Let him talk.”
“That man disappeared after trying to destroy us.”
Gabriel’s eyes remained fixed on Adrian.
“Ten years ago, Adrian Voss was my closest advisor.”
Sadi listened carefully.
She had never heard Gabriel speak about his past.
Not like this.
Not with uncertainty.
“He knew everything,” Gabriel continued.
“My business.”
“My enemies.”
“My family.”
His voice became colder.
“And then he betrayed me.”
Adrian heard the words.
He laughed quietly.
“Is that what you told yourself?”
Gabriel’s jaw tightened.
“You disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“You left people dead.”
“Yes.”
“You made me believe you were killed.”
Adrian looked down.
“No.”
A pause.
“You made yourself believe it.”
The sentence stayed in the air.
Sadi looked at Gabriel.
For the first time since she met him, she saw something different.
Not anger.
Not power.
Pain.
Real pain.
Because whoever Adrian Voss was, he was connected to something Gabriel had buried.
Something he did not want uncovered.
Carmine stepped closer to the phone.
“You have five seconds to explain why you are alive.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Still protecting Gabriel.”
“Five.”
“Still believing every story he tells you.”
“Four.”
Adrian sighed.
“Then ask him about the night the warehouse burned.”
Gabriel’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Sadi noticed.
“What warehouse?”
Nobody answered.
Carmine looked at Gabriel.
Waiting.
Gabriel looked away.
That was enough.
Sadi understood.
There were things even powerful men were afraid to remember.
Adrian continued.
“Ask him why your father’s records disappeared.”
The room froze.
Gabriel’s eyes moved back to the screen.
“What do you know about my father?”
Adrian smiled.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The question you should have asked ten years ago.”
Gabriel’s breathing became heavier.
His wound began hurting again.
The monitors reacted immediately.
Dr. Cole rushed forward.
“Your heart rate is increasing.”
Gabriel ignored him.
“Tell me.”
Adrian looked at Sadi.
Then at the camera.
“Not over the phone.”
“Why?”
“Because someone is listening.”
Everyone looked around.
Carmine immediately checked the room.
“No one is here.”
Adrian shook his head.
“You still don’t understand.”
His expression became serious.
“The person who poisoned you was never trying to kill you.”
Gabriel narrowed his eyes.
“What?”
“They were trying to force you to reveal something.”
Sadi felt cold.
“What?”
Adrian looked at her.
“The same thing your mother died protecting.”
The apartment became silent.
Sadi froze.
“My mother?”
Adrian nodded.
“Ellen Miller knew the truth.”
Sadi took a step backward.
“No.”
“She found the records.”
“No.”
“She hid them.”
Sadi’s breathing changed.
Because all her life she believed her mother was simply unlucky.
A woman caught in circumstances she could not control.
But now this stranger was saying something different.
Her mother had known.
Her mother had chosen.
“Where are the records?” Gabriel asked.
Adrian looked at him.
“You still think they belong to you.”
A pause.
“They don’t.”
Gabriel’s expression hardened.
“Then who do they belong to?”
Adrian looked toward Sadi.
“The person your father tried to protect.”
Nobody understood.
Except Adrian.
He had information nobody else had.
And that made him dangerous.
Carmine stepped closer.
“You came here to play games?”
“No.”
Adrian reached inside his coat.
Every guard raised their weapons.
But he slowly removed a small object.
A photograph.
He held it toward the camera.
Gabriel stared.
His face changed.
Because he recognized it.
A picture from twenty years ago.
A picture that should not exist.
“Where did you get that?”
Adrian looked at him.
“Your father gave it to me.”
Gabriel’s eyes widened.
“My father died before that picture was taken.”
“No.”
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
“He disappeared.”
The words felt heavier than a gunshot.
Because Gabriel had built his entire life around one truth.
His father was dead.
His father was gone.
His father’s enemies had taken everything.
But Adrian was saying the one thing Gabriel had never considered.
Maybe the story was wrong.
Sadi looked at the photograph.
Even from far away, she could see something strange.
Two people standing beside Gabriel’s father.
One of them was a young woman.
The other was a child.
A child wearing a necklace.
The same necklace symbol hidden inside the old records.
The same symbol connected to her mother’s notebook.
Gabriel saw it too.
“Who is that girl?”
Adrian lowered the photograph.
“You really don’t remember.”
Gabriel stared.
“Remember what?”
Adrian looked at him.
“The night your father saved her.”
A long silence followed.
Then Adrian added:
“The night your father chose between his family and the truth.”
Gabriel’s hand tightened.
“Where is the girl now?”
Adrian looked toward the apartment hallway.
Then he said something that made Sadi’s blood run cold.
“She’s closer than you think.”
At that exact moment, the apartment lights went out.
The security team turned.
A phone began ringing from inside Sadi’s bedroom.
Not Gabriel’s.
Not Carmine’s.
Sadi’s.
The ringtone stopped.
Then a message appeared on the screen.
One sentence.
One name.
May you like
And Sadi knew immediately who had sent it…
Because the phone displayed her mother’s name.
