Chapter 6 - The Betrayal Hidden In The Kwan Empire

A man pointed a gun at Daniel Kwan and whispered:
“You were never the owner.”
When Daniel opened the traitor’s folder, he found a signed agreement hidden among his father’s old documents.
One sentence was written at the bottom:
“Control transfers after Daniel’s death.”
Daniel suddenly realized the entire empire had been waiting for him to disappear.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The warehouse remained silent.
Too silent.
Daniel stared at the man standing in front of him.
His advisor.
His most trusted person.
The man who had stood beside him during negotiations.
The man who knew every weakness of his enemies.
The man Daniel had allowed closer than almost anyone.
“Marcus.”
The name left Daniel’s mouth quietly.
The man smiled.
“I was wondering when you would finally understand.”
Harper looked at Daniel.
She saw something she had never seen before.
Betrayal.
Not from an enemy.
From someone he trusted.
“You worked for my father?” Daniel asked.
Marcus slowly lowered the folder.
“I worked for the Kwan family.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“I am the Kwan family.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
A pause.
“You inherited the name.”
The words hit harder than a threat.
Because Daniel knew exactly what they meant.
His entire life, he believed he had escaped his father’s shadow.
He believed he rebuilt the empire.
He believed every decision he made belonged to him.
But maybe he had only been following a plan written before he was old enough to understand it.
“What’s in the folder?” Daniel asked.
Marcus smiled.
“Everything.”
He opened the folder.
“Your father’s original agreements.”
Another page.
“Financial records.”
Another.
“Names of people who helped him.”
Another.
“And the document that explains why Harper Williams was never supposed to survive.”
Harper froze.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Give me the folder.”
Marcus laughed.
“You still think you’re in control.”
Daniel’s eyes became cold.
“I know exactly who I am.”
“No.”
Marcus looked at him.
“You know who you became.”
A pause.
“But you don’t know who created you.”
Emily stepped forward.
“Marcus.”
For the first time, Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“You should have stayed hidden.”
Emily’s face changed.
“You knew I was alive.”
“Yes.”
Harper looked at her mother.
“You knew him?”
Emily nodded slowly.
“He was your father’s right hand.”
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“You helped him.”
Marcus didn’t deny it.
“I helped build the empire.”
“You helped destroy my family.”
Marcus’s expression became empty.
“That depends on whose version of the story you believe.”
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus walked closer.
“Your father wasn’t the only person making decisions.”
The warehouse became tense.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Explain.”
Marcus looked at Harper.
“She deserves to know.”
Harper felt her chest tighten.
“Know what?”
Marcus opened the folder.
“Your mother wasn’t just an employee.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“Marcus.”
But he continued.
“She was part of the Kwan family.”
Harper froze.
“What?”
Daniel looked at Emily.
“No.”
Emily looked away.
The silence answered before she did.
Harper stepped back.
“You knew?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“No.”
But Harper wasn’t looking at him.
She was looking at her mother.
“My whole life…”
Her voice shook.
“You let me believe I was nobody.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Harper wiped her face.
“Protect me from what?”
Emily looked at Daniel.
“From becoming a weapon.”
The words made everyone stop.
Harper frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus answered.
“Your bloodline.”
Daniel turned sharply.
“Enough.”
Marcus smiled.
“Why?”
“Because you’re afraid she’ll know.”
Daniel moved toward him.
But Marcus’s men raised their weapons.
Daniel stopped.
The room changed instantly.
Marcus looked satisfied.
“For years, everyone thought Daniel Kwan was powerful because he controlled people.”
He looked around.
“But the truth is, Daniel was powerful because everyone let him believe he was.”
Daniel’s fists tightened.
“Why now?”
Marcus looked at him.
“Because the final piece arrived.”
Harper felt uneasy.
“What piece?”
Marcus looked at her.
“You.”
A cold feeling moved through her.
“No.”
Marcus opened another document.
“Your father and Daniel’s father made an agreement.”
Daniel looked confused.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Marcus placed the paper on the table.
“Twenty-five years ago, they decided the future of the empire.”
Daniel read the document.
His expression slowly changed.
“What is this?”
Marcus smiled.
“The reason Harper was hidden.”
Daniel continued reading.
Then he stopped.
Because the final line was clear.
If Daniel Kwan died without an heir, ownership transferred to...
He looked at Harper.
“No.”
Harper saw his reaction.
“What?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Marcus did.
“You.”
The word echoed through the warehouse.
Harper stared.
“I don’t understand.”
“You are the legal successor.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
Marcus smiled.
“Your father knew Daniel would never willingly give up control.”
He looked at Harper.
“So he created a backup plan.”
Harper looked at Daniel.
“And that backup plan was me?”
Nobody answered.
Because the truth was becoming clearer.
Her entire life.
Her mother’s disappearance.
Her father’s secret.
Daniel’s family.
Everything connected to one thing.
Power.
But Harper didn’t want power.
She never wanted an empire.
She wanted a normal life.
“I don’t want this,” she whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
For the first time, his expression showed something beyond control.
Concern.
“You don’t have to take anything.”
Marcus laughed.
“That’s where you’re wrong.”
Suddenly, the warehouse doors opened.
More men entered.
But these men weren’t Marcus’s.
Daniel recognized them immediately.
His own security team.
The same people who had served him for years.
They surrounded the warehouse.
Marcus looked surprised.
Only for a second.
Then he smiled.
“Of course.”
Daniel looked toward his men.
“What are you doing?”
Nobody answered.
That silence hurt more than betrayal.
Because Daniel realized something.
The empire he controlled was never truly his.
It belonged to whoever controlled the people inside it.
Marcus walked toward the exit.
“You have one night.”
Daniel stared.
“For what?”
Marcus looked at Harper.
“For her to decide.”
Harper’s heart raced.
“Decide what?”
Marcus smiled.
“Whether she wants to destroy the Kwan empire…”
He paused.
“Or inherit it.”
Marcus left.
The warehouse doors closed behind him.
For the first time in his life, Daniel Kwan stood surrounded by people he could no longer trust.
Emily sat down quietly.
Harper looked at Daniel.
“What happens now?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
That was the most terrifying part.
Then his phone vibrated.
One new message.
From an unknown number.
Daniel opened it.
A picture appeared.
Harper gasped.
Because the image showed her childhood home.
The place where she grew up.
The place she thought was empty.
And standing in front of the door was a woman Harper recognized immediately.
A woman who should not exist.
Daniel looked at the message beneath the photo.

Three words.
“Your sister survived.”
