Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

A gunshot echoed through the mansion hallway, and Harper Williams whispered:

“Daniel… who is coming?”

When mafia boss Daniel Kwan pulled her behind him, he found a broken security badge near the entrance.

Three words were carved into the back:

“Emily was right.”

Daniel suddenly realized the attack was not meant for him.

The darkness inside the mansion lasted only a few seconds.

But for Harper, it felt much longer.

The moment the lights disappeared, Daniel moved.

Not quickly.

Not desperately.

Precisely.

Like a man who had spent his entire life preparing for the moment when everything went wrong.

One second he was standing beside her.

The next, he had placed himself between her and the hallway.

His hand reached inside his jacket.

Harper froze.

She had seen rumors.

She had heard whispers from the other employees.

She knew Daniel Kwan was dangerous.

But she had never seen that side of him.

Not the businessman.

Not the wealthy owner of the mansion.

The man standing in front of her now was someone else.

Someone built from survival.

“Stay behind me,” Daniel said.

His voice was low.

Calm.

Absolute.

Harper almost argued.

Almost told him she could take care of herself.

But then she heard it.

A sound from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Someone was inside.

Someone who had passed through Daniel’s security system.

That alone was impossible.

Nobody entered the Kwan estate without permission.

Nobody.

Daniel lifted his phone and sent one message.

Three seconds later, the mansion security team responded.

But there was no answer.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

That was when Harper understood.

Something was very wrong.

“Your guards?” she whispered.

Daniel didn’t look away from the hallway.

“They’re not responding.”

The answer sent a cold feeling through her chest.

Because for the first time, she saw something she never expected.

Daniel Kwan was not afraid of being attacked.

He was afraid of who could get close enough to attack him.

A shadow appeared near the doorway.

Daniel raised his weapon.

“Stop.”

The figure froze.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

A woman’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

“Daniel.”

The weapon in Daniel’s hand lowered slightly.

Not because he trusted the person.

Because he recognized the voice.

Harper watched his face change.

A reaction she had never seen before.

Shock.

“No,” Daniel whispered.

The woman stepped into the light.

And Harper felt the entire world shift.

She was older.

Her hair was darker with strands of gray.

Her face carried years of pain.

But Harper knew that face.

Not because she had seen her recently.

Because she had seen her in photographs.

On birthdays.

On lonely nights.

In memories.

The woman standing in front of them was the woman Harper had spent years believing she would never see again.

Her mother.

Emily Williams.

Harper couldn’t breathe.

The room became silent.

Impossible silent.

“Mom?”

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Emily looked at her.

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

“My little girl.”

Harper stepped backward.

No.

It couldn’t be real.

Her mother had been gone for years.

Her funeral had happened.

Her belongings had been packed.

Her life had been closed.

Or at least, that was what Harper had believed.

“What is happening?” Harper asked.

Her voice cracked.

Daniel looked between them.

He looked more lost than Harper had ever seen him.

Because Emily Williams wasn’t supposed to be alive.

And Harper wasn’t supposed to exist in his world.

Not like this.

Emily took a step forward.

But Daniel immediately stopped her.

“Don’t.”

The word was sharp.

Emily stopped.

“I know what you’re thinking,” she said.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“You disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“You left her alone.”

Emily looked at Harper.

Pain crossed her face.

“I was trying to protect her.”

Harper laughed softly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“Protect me?”

Both of them looked at her.

“I spent years thinking you were gone.”

Her voice shook.

“I visited a grave with your name on it.”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Harper stepped forward.

“You don’t know what it felt like.”

The room became quiet again.

Daniel watched silently.

For the first time in decades, he was not the person controlling the conversation.

He was watching two people who had both lost years they could never get back.

Emily looked down.

“I wanted to come back.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

Emily looked at Daniel.

That answer told Harper everything.

Something between them was connected.

Something dangerous.

“What did he do?” Harper asked.

Daniel immediately looked at her.

“Harper.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I need to know.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“Daniel didn’t hurt me.”

That surprised Harper.

“Then what happened?”

Emily looked at Daniel.

“His father did.”

The atmosphere changed.

Daniel’s expression became cold.

Because that was the one name he never wanted mentioned.

His father.

The man who created the empire.

The man who destroyed his family.

“The night I disappeared,” Emily continued, “I found documents.”

“What documents?”

“Proof.”

Daniel looked away.

“Proof of what?”

Emily’s voice became quieter.

“Your father wasn’t just involved in illegal businesses.”

Harper listened carefully.

“He was responsible for your brother’s death.”

Daniel went completely still.

The statement landed like a weapon.

Harper looked at him.

She expected anger.

Denial.

Something.

But Daniel said nothing.

Because some part of him already knew.

Emily reached into her coat and pulled out a small flash drive.

“I kept a copy.”

Daniel stared at it.

“What is that?”

“The truth.”

Before anyone could move, the mansion lights suddenly turned back on.

The security system restarted.

Then every screen in the room activated.

The large television above the fireplace flickered.

A video appeared.

A man sat in a dark room.

Older.

Smiling.

Daniel’s face changed instantly.

Harper noticed.

He knew him.

The man looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel.”

The voice filled the mansion.

“I knew you would eventually find Emily.”

Daniel stepped closer to the screen.

“Impossible.”

The man smiled.

“Your father made many mistakes.”

A pause.

“But his biggest mistake was leaving me alive.”

Harper looked at Daniel.

“Who is that?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because the person on the screen was someone he had spent years searching for.

Someone connected to every secret.

Every betrayal.

Every death.

The man leaned closer to the camera.

“And Harper Williams…”

Harper froze.

The screen showed her face.

A photograph.

A file.

Information about her entire life.

The man smiled.

“You should know the truth about your real father.”

Daniel immediately grabbed Harper’s arm.

“Turn it off.”

But the video continued.

The man spoke one final sentence.

“Because he wasn’t the man Emily told you about.”

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel’s phone received a new message.

One picture.

One location.

One sentence.

Harper looked at the screen.

It was an address.

Daniel’s old family house.

The place that burned down twenty-five years ago.

And beneath it were five words:

“Your father is waiting.”
