Chapter 5 - The Woman From Lucian’s Past

The woman standing in front of us held the file like she had been waiting years for this moment.
She didn't look surprised.
She didn't look afraid.
She looked like someone who had finally found the missing piece of a puzzle.
Lucian Vale stared at her.
For the first time since I met him, I saw something close to anger in his eyes.
Not controlled anger.
Not the cold expression he showed everyone else.
Real anger.
"Vanessa."
The woman smiled slightly.
"Hello, Lucian."
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
Like she had walked into a room where she belonged.
Like she wasn't standing in front of the most feared man in the city.
Like she knew something he didn't.
My eyes moved between them.
This was the woman from the phone call.
The former fiancée.
The person connected to the worst moment of Lucian's life.
And she was holding a file with my name on it.
Lucian stepped forward.
"Where did you get that?"
Vanessa looked down at the folder.
"This?"
She lifted it slightly.
"The file everyone has been searching for."
His expression hardened.
"Give it to me."
"No."
The answer came instantly.
The hallway became silent.
I felt the tension between them before I understood it.
This wasn't just two people with history.
This was two people who knew exactly where the other person's weaknesses were.
"You broke into my archive."
Vanessa tilted her head.
"You still think everything is about you."
Lucian's eyes narrowed.
"You're holding something that belongs to me."
"No."
She looked at me.
"It belongs to her."
My heart dropped.
Me.
She was talking about me.
I took a step back.
"I don't know you."
Vanessa looked at me carefully.
"I know."
Her answer confused me.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you've spent seven years believing a lie."
Lucian immediately moved between us.
"Enough."
Vanessa smiled.
"There it is."
"What?"
"The same thing you always do."
Her eyes moved to him.
"You protect people before you know whether they deserve it."
The words hit harder than they should have.
Because they sounded personal.
Like she wasn't talking about tonight.
Like she was talking about years ago.
Lucian's voice became colder.
"Leave."
Vanessa didn't move.
"You want to throw me out?"
"Yes."
"Even if I tell you what happened to Evelyn's father?"
Everything stopped.
I looked at Lucian.
He looked at Vanessa.
And for a moment, nobody spoke.
Because she had just said the one thing that could control the entire room.
The truth.
"My father."
Vanessa looked at me.
"Your father wasn't missing."
My heartbeat changed.
"He was running."
The words felt impossible.
"No."
She opened the file.
"You were told he disappeared."
She pulled out a document.
"You were told he abandoned you."
Another page.
"You were told your mother died because of circumstances nobody could control."
My hands started shaking.
"Stop."
I didn't know if I was speaking to her or myself.
Vanessa continued.
"But the truth was much worse."
Lucian looked at the papers.
"What are you doing?"
"Showing her what you refused to find."
His expression changed.
"What does that mean?"
Vanessa looked at him.
"It means your enemy was never outside your company."
A long silence followed.
I looked at Lucian.
He looked angry.
But beneath the anger was something else.
Fear.
A memory.
Something he had buried.
"What happened three years ago?" I asked.
Neither of them answered.
I looked at Lucian.
"Tell me."
His jaw tightened.
"Evelyn..."
"No."
My voice surprised even me.
"I've spent seven years not knowing anything."
I looked at the file.
"Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle."
I stepped closer.
"Everyone keeps hiding things from me."
My eyes met his.
"I'm done being the person everyone protects while they destroy my life."
For several seconds, Lucian said nothing.
Then he slowly looked away.
Vanessa watched him.
Almost sadly.
"She really doesn't know."
Lucian's eyes snapped back.
"Don't."
"She doesn't know what her father discovered."
"Vanessa."
"She doesn't know why you erased every record connected to her family."
I froze.
"What?"
I looked at Lucian.
He didn't deny it.
That was the worst part.
"Lucian."
His silence answered.
My chest tightened.
"You erased records about me?"
"No."
The answer came quickly.
But not confidently.
"I protected them."
"From who?"
He didn't answer.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"From the same people who killed your father."
The room became painfully quiet.
I couldn't breathe.
"My father was murdered?"
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Lucian.
Because I needed him to say it wasn't true.
I needed him to tell me she was lying.
But Lucian Vale had built his entire life on controlling every situation.
And right now...
He had no control.
"I was trying to find proof," he finally said.
My voice became smaller.
"Of what?"
"That your father's death wasn't an accident."
I stared at him.
"And you knew?"
His eyes lowered.
"I suspected."
"How long?"
Another silence.
"Seven years."
The number felt like a physical blow.
Seven years.
I had spent seven years grieving someone who might have been murdered.
And he knew.
"You knew for seven years?"
"I was trying to keep you alive."
I laughed.
A broken, bitter sound.
"Alive?"
I shook my head.
"I was cleaning hotel rooms for strangers."
My voice cracked.
"I was choosing between food and electricity."
I looked at him.
"That was your version of keeping me alive?"
Pain flashed across his face.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
And somehow that made everything worse.
Because part of me believed him.
Part of me hated that I believed him.
Vanessa closed the file.
"This is why you need to know everything."
She handed me the folder.
Lucian reached for it.
"No."
I held it against my chest.
"No more secrets."
Neither of them moved.
I opened the file.
The first page was a report.
The second was a photograph.
The third was a document with my father's signature.
Then I saw a name.
A name written at the bottom.
A name I recognized.
My blood turned cold.
Because it wasn't my father's name.
It wasn't Lucian's.
It was my mother's.
"That's impossible."
Lucian looked at the page.
His expression changed.
"What is it?"
I couldn't answer.
Because the document said my mother hadn't died seven years ago.
She had signed this document three years later.
After everyone told me she was gone.
Vanessa whispered:
"Now you understand why I came back."
I looked at her.
"Where is she?"
Nobody answered.
The silence was enough.
I turned toward Lucian.
"Where is my mother?"
Before he could speak, every phone in the hallway started ringing at the same time.
Lucian's.
Vanessa's.
Mine.
All three.
A message appeared.
Same sender.
Same words.
I looked down.
And my hands went numb.
"You finally found the truth. Now come find the woman who buried it."
The private elevator behind us opened.
And a woman stepped out.
May you like
A woman who looked exactly like the photograph.
My mother.
