Chapter 4 - The Girl Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

The voice came from inside the elevator.
Quiet.
Almost gentle.
But it froze every muscle in my body.
"Evelyn Hart."
Nobody had called my name like that in years.
Not my current name.
Not the name I used on documents.
Not the name printed on my employee badge.
The way that voice said it made it feel like a memory.
Like something buried.
Something I had spent years trying to forget.
Lucian immediately moved in front of me.
His entire body changed.
The calm billionaire disappeared.
The man standing there now was someone else.
Someone dangerous.
"Who is there?"
No answer.
The elevator doors continued opening.
Slowly.
Too slowly.
The empty space inside looked darker than it should have.
Lucian reached for the phone in his pocket.
I grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
He looked back at me.
"What?"
"I don't know."
That was the truth.
Every instinct inside me was screaming.
Not because someone was in the elevator.
Because some part of me recognized the voice.
And I didn't want to know why.
Lucian looked down at my hand holding his arm.
For a second, neither of us moved.
Then the elevator lights flickered.
The doors suddenly closed.
Lucian stepped forward and forced them open before they could shut completely.
Inside the elevator was nothing.
No person.
No movement.
Only a small black envelope lying on the floor.
My stomach dropped.
Lucian noticed my reaction.
"You know that envelope."
I shook my head.
"No."
Another lie.
A small one.
But he saw through it.
He walked inside and picked it up.
There was no name.
No address.
Nothing.
Just one symbol drawn on the front.
A circle with a line through the center.
The moment Lucian saw it, his expression changed.
"You recognize it."
I looked at him.
"You do too."
The silence answered for him.
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
He looked at it first.
Then slowly handed it to me.
My fingers trembled as I took it.
It was an old picture.
A family.
A man.
A woman.
A little girl.
I stared at the child in the photograph.
Seven years old.
Long brown hair.
A small scar above her eyebrow.
My scar.
I looked at the woman standing beside her.
My mother.
Then I saw the man.
The man everyone told me had disappeared.
My father.
But there was something else.
Written on the back of the photograph.
A date.
And a name.
Lucian Vale.
I looked up.
"Why is your name on this?"
He didn't answer immediately.
Because for the first time, he looked as confused as I was.
"I've never seen this photo before."
"But your name is here."
"I know."
"Then explain."
His jaw tightened.
"I can't explain something I don't understand."
I wanted to believe him.
I really did.
But everything about that night felt impossible.
The note.
The video.
The file.
The photograph.
All connected to me.
And somehow, all connected to him.
"You knew my father."
Lucian became still.
"No."
The answer came too quickly.
I noticed.
"You did."
"No."
"You hesitated."
His eyes narrowed.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"Then tell me I'm wrong."
Silence.
That was worse.
Because Lucian Vale always had something to say.
Except now.
Now he was searching for the truth too.
"I saw him once."
My heart stopped.
"When?"
"Years ago."
"Where?"
He looked away.
"At a meeting."
"What kind of meeting?"
"A private one."
"About what?"
His expression hardened.
"Your father was involved with people who weren't safe."
I laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
"That's convenient."
"What is?"
"Everyone always says that."
I looked at the photograph.
"My father was dangerous."
"My mother was unstable."
"I was just a child who didn't understand."
My voice became quieter.
"But nobody ever tells me what actually happened."
Lucian watched me.
For a moment, I thought he might finally tell me.
Then the building alarm sounded.
Not a fire alarm.
A security alert.
Red lights flashed across the hallway.
Lucian immediately looked toward the cameras.
"What now?"
A voice came through the speaker.
"Mr. Vale, we have a problem."
Lucian pressed the communication button.
"Report."
The security director sounded nervous.
"Someone accessed the old archive room again."
Lucian's eyes changed.
"Impossible."
"Sir, the room was locked."
"Then how did they enter?"
A pause.
Then:
"They used your access code."
The hallway went silent.
Lucian looked at me.
I understood immediately.
Someone had entered using his identity.
Someone who wanted him blamed.
"Who has access to my codes?"
The security director hesitated.
"Only three people."
"Names."
Another pause.
Then the answer came.
"Yourself."
"Your security director."
"And..."
Lucian waited.
"And your former fiancée."
The air changed.
I didn't know why.
But I felt it.
A name from his past.
A person connected to everything.
Lucian ended the call.
I looked at him.
"Former fiancée?"
He didn't answer.
"Who is she?"
"It doesn't matter."
"It clearly does."
His eyes met mine.
For some reason, that question bothered him more than any accusation.
"Her name is Vanessa Crowe."
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way he said it did.
Like it carried pain.
"Was she the reason you stopped feeling anything?"
The question escaped.
Lucian looked surprised.
Nobody asked him questions like that.
Not honestly.
Not directly.
His expression became unreadable.
"Three years ago, Vanessa betrayed me."
I waited.
"And after that..."
He stopped.
I realized something.
The rumors were true.
Something happened three years ago.
Something broke him.
"What happened after that?"
He looked at the photograph in my hand.
"After that, your father disappeared."
My breathing stopped.
"What?"
Lucian stepped closer.
"Your father was investigating something connected to my family."
"My family?"
"Not my blood family."
His voice lowered.
"The people who built my empire."
I stared at him.
"You're saying my father disappeared because of you?"
"No."
He looked directly into my eyes.
"I'm saying someone wanted you to believe that."
Before I could ask anything else, my phone rang.
I froze.
I hadn't received a call in hours.
The number was hidden.
Unknown.
Lucian noticed.
"Don't answer."
Something about his voice made me hesitate.
But the phone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Finally, I answered.
I didn't speak.
Neither did the person on the other end.
Only breathing.
Then a whisper.
"Evelyn."
My blood went cold.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it once before.
Seven years ago.
The night everything disappeared.
"Who is this?"
Silence.
Then:
"You need to leave Lucian Vale before he finds out what you really are."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"What does that mean?"
The voice continued.
"He doesn't know the truth about the girl in the photograph."
I looked at Lucian.
He was watching me.
Waiting.
The voice became quieter.
"But when he learns that you were the reason his life was destroyed..."
A pause.
Then the call ended.
I lowered the phone slowly.
Lucian stepped toward me.
"What did they say?"
I couldn't answer.
Because at that moment, the private elevator opened again.
This time, someone was inside.
A woman stepped out.
Elegant.
Calm.
Wearing a black dress.
Her eyes immediately found mine.
Then she smiled.
"Evelyn Hart."
Lucian turned.
The color disappeared from his face.
May you like
Because he recognized her.
And she was holding the original file marked with my name.
