Chapter 14 - The Ring That Started a War

Luca did not resist arrest.

Hazel refused to accept the charge.

The evidence appeared devastating.

A gun registered to Luca.

His fingerprints.

Ballistics matching the bullet recovered near Thomas’s body.

But Hazel knew Evelyn had fired the shot.

Daniel knew it too.

The problem was proving it.

Then Hazel remembered the old security footage.

There had been a gap.

Seven missing minutes.

Daniel revealed Thomas kept redundant recordings.

One copy had been hidden inside the Halcyon archive.

Hazel searched for twelve hours.

At 3:14 a.m., she found it.

The footage showed Evelyn taking Luca’s gun from his coat before entering the upper level.

She fired.

Then replaced it.

Luca was innocent.

Charges collapsed.

Antonio faced conspiracy charges.

Salerno faced a lifetime in prison.

Evelyn faced murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, and financial crimes.

Daniel accepted responsibility for fraud and conspiracy in exchange for cooperation.

He would serve time.

Before sentencing, Hazel visited him.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“I know.”

“I don’t expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

He smiled sadly.

Hazel removed their old engagement ring from her purse.

Daniel stared.

“I kept it because I thought returning it would mean something.”

“And now?”

“Now it doesn’t.”

She placed it on the table.

“I don’t need to hate you to leave you behind.”

Daniel cried.

Hazel did too.

Then she walked away.

Outside the courthouse, Luca waited.

No guards.

No convoy.

No criminal empire.

Just Luca.

“What happens now?” Hazel asked.

“I sold the legitimate companies to employees. The rest is being dismantled.”

“And you?”

“I don’t know.”

Hazel smiled.

“Good.”

He frowned.

“Good?”

“You finally get to choose.”

Luca looked at her.

Then removed the black Moretti ring from his pocket.

Hazel’s heart jumped.

He did not put it on her.

Instead, he held it out.

“The first time I tried this, I made the decision for you.”

Hazel stared at the ring.

“So this time?”

“You decide.”

She took it.

Then closed his fingers around it.

Luca’s face fell slightly.

Hazel smiled.

“Not that ring.”

Understanding slowly entered his eyes.

“If you want to ask me something one day, buy a new one.”

Luca laughed.

“Is that a hint?”

“It’s accounting advice.”

He kissed her.

Months passed.

Trials began.

Hazel started a nonprofit financial recovery organization funded with legally recovered Halcyon assets.

Her mother joined her.

Sofia went back to law school.

Noah lived with Daniel’s sister while his father served his sentence.

Luca bought a house outside the city.

Quiet.

Two dogs.

Exactly as promised.

One evening, Hazel arrived and found Luca standing beside the lake.

He wore no suit.

That was still strange.

“What?”

Hazel asked.

“You look guilty.”

“I’m offended.”

“You look extremely guilty.”

Luca reached into his pocket.

Hazel’s heart stopped.

He knelt.

She covered her mouth.

“Hazel Brooks.”

“Luca.”

“I prepared a speech.”

“Oh no.”

“It was good.”

“I’m sure.”

“You’re ruining it.”

She laughed through tears.

He opened the box.

Inside was a simple diamond ring.

New.

Untouched by Daniel.

Untouched by Moretti tradition.

Untouched by fear.

Luca looked up.

“This ring doesn’t mean you belong to me.”

Hazel’s eyes filled.

“It means I’m asking whether you’ll let me belong beside you.”

Hazel whispered, “Yes.”

Then a car pulled into the driveway.

Luca stood.

Hazel frowned.

“Expecting someone?”

“No.”

A woman stepped out.

Hazel recognized her immediately.

She was the federal prosecutor handling Evelyn’s case.

She walked toward them carrying a sealed envelope.

“Hazel Brooks?”

“Yes.”

“You need to read this before tomorrow’s sentencing.”

Hazel took it.
