Chapter 4 - The Gala Of Lies And Betrayal

The most dangerous moments were not the ones when people screamed.

They were the ones when everyone smiled.

Vincent Blackwood understood that better than anyone.

For years, he had attended countless events where powerful people gathered beneath expensive lights and pretended they were building a better world.

He had watched politicians shake hands with criminals.

He had watched businessmen donate millions while exploiting thousands.

He had watched people create beautiful speeches about kindness while hiding ugly truths behind closed doors.

But the charity gala hosted by the Whitmore Foundation was different.

Because this time, Vincent was not watching from a distance.

This time, he knew exactly what was hidden beneath the surface.

And he knew the woman standing in the middle of it was being forced to carry the weight alone.

Claire Bennett arrived at the foundation headquarters the next morning with a determination Vincent had never seen before.

The fear was still there.

He could see it.

Fear did not disappear overnight.

Especially not after someone had spent months controlling your life.

But something else had appeared.

Resolve.

She placed a folder on Vincent’s desk.

“I copied these before he realized I knew.”

Vincent opened it.

Inside were financial records.

Private communications.

Medical transfer schedules.

Patient lists.

Everything Claire had secretly collected while pretending to be the perfect fiancée.

“You did all this alone?”

Claire nodded.

“For three months.”

Vincent looked through the documents.

“You could have been killed.”

Claire remained silent.

That silence bothered him more than any answer.

Because she knew.

She understood exactly what she had risked.

And she had done it anyway.

“Why?”

Claire looked at the floor.

“Because those children didn’t have anyone.”

The answer was simple.

And that was what made it powerful.

Vincent had spent his entire life surrounded by people fighting for themselves.

Claire was risking everything for strangers.

For children whose names she barely knew.

For families who would never know what she had tried to do.

He looked back at the documents.

“Grant knows.”

Claire’s expression changed.

“How?”

“He found out someone accessed the system.”

Her face turned pale.

“He knows it was me?”

“Not yet.”

Vincent closed the folder.

“But he suspects.”

Claire sat down slowly.

For a moment, she looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“I thought I had more time.”

Vincent studied her.

“You don’t.”

She looked at him.

“What are you saying?”

“Tonight’s foundation board meeting.”

Claire frowned.

“What about it?”

“He is going to move.”

Vincent tapped the folder.

“Men like Grant don’t wait for evidence to destroy them. They destroy the person holding the evidence first.”

Claire’s fingers tightened.

“Ethan.”

Vincent saw the fear return instantly.

Not for herself.

For her brother.

“I won’t let him touch Ethan.”

Claire looked at him.

“You cannot promise that.”

Vincent’s expression remained cold.

“Yes, I can.”

She stared at him.

Because Vincent Blackwood did not make promises.

Not empty ones.

Not emotional ones.

When he said something, he meant it.

And that scared her almost as much as it comforted her.

That evening, the Whitmore Foundation hosted another private event.

Not as large as the gala.

More exclusive.

Only board members.

Major donors.

Hospital executives.

The people who controlled decisions behind the scenes.

Grant had planned the event carefully.

Everything was designed to create an image.

A room full of respected people.

A room full of witnesses.

A room where Claire could not easily accuse him without destroying herself.

Because that was Grant’s greatest weapon.

Not violence.

Not threats.

Control.

Claire entered the room wearing an elegant dark blue dress.

Her hair was styled perfectly.

Her makeup hid the exhaustion beneath her eyes.

To everyone else, she looked like a woman preparing for an important evening.

But Vincent saw the truth.

She looked like someone walking into a battlefield.

Vincent stood across the room in a black suit.

His presence immediately changed the atmosphere.

People noticed him.

They always did.

Grant noticed too.

For a brief moment, their eyes met.

The smile on Grant’s face remained.

But his eyes hardened.

He knew.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

Grant approached with confidence.

“Mr. Blackwood.”

Vincent nodded.

“Doctor Whitmore.”

Two powerful men.

Two perfect smiles.

Two people who knew this conversation was not what it appeared to be.

“I didn’t expect you to take such an interest in our foundation,” Grant said.

Vincent took a sip of his drink.

“I take interest in anything involving vulnerable people.”

A subtle pause.

Grant smiled.

“How admirable.”

Claire stood nearby.

She felt the tension between them.

Everyone else saw two successful men having a polite conversation.

She saw a warning.

Grant leaned slightly closer.

“I hope you are not misunderstanding your role here.”

Vincent’s eyes remained calm.

“My role?”

Grant glanced toward Claire.

“She works for you.”

A pause.

“Nothing more.”

Vincent looked at him.

The room seemed colder.

“You should be careful.”

Grant smiled.

“About what?”

“Assuming you know what people mean to me.”

For the first time, Grant’s smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But Vincent saw it.

Fear.

Small.

Hidden.

Real.

Then Grant recovered.

“Enjoy the evening, Mr. Blackwood.”

He walked away.

Claire watched him leave.

“You provoked him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted to see his reaction.”

“And?”

Vincent looked toward Grant.

“He is scared.”

Claire lowered her voice.

“That makes him more dangerous.”

“I know.”

The event began with Grant giving another speech.

Another performance.

Another carefully crafted image.

He stood beneath the lights and spoke about saving lives.

About protecting families.

About hope.

The audience listened.

They applauded.

Claire stood beside him.

But this time, something was different.

She was no longer completely alone.

Vincent watched from the back of the room.

Marcus stood beside him.

“We found something else.”

Vincent turned.

“What?”

Marcus handed him a small device.

“A backup server.”

“Where?”

“Inside the private medical office.”

Vincent looked toward Grant.

“When?”

“Tonight.”

Vincent understood immediately.

Grant had something hidden.

Something important enough to keep separate from the foundation records.

Something he was afraid people would find.

Then suddenly, the large screens behind Grant flickered.

The room went silent.

Everyone looked up.

A few seconds passed.

Then the screen returned to normal.

A technical issue.

That was what everyone assumed.

Except Vincent.

Because Marcus had not touched anything yet.

Someone else had.

Vincent looked around the room.

And then he saw Claire.

She was staring at the screen.

Confused.

Afraid.

Because she knew what was happening.

Someone had accessed the system.

But it was not them.

Grant looked toward Claire.

His expression changed.

He knew too.

The next moment happened quickly.

Security guards moved toward the private hallway.

Guests began whispering.

Grant stepped closer to Claire.

“What did you do?”

His voice was quiet.

Only she could hear.

Claire shook her head.

“I didn’t.”

Grant grabbed her arm.

Not hard enough for the room to notice.

Hard enough for her to feel the threat.

Vincent saw it.

Immediately.

He started moving.

But Claire looked at him.

A tiny movement.

Stop.

Not yet.

Vincent stopped.

Because he understood.

She was trying to find out something.

Grant leaned closer.

“You should have listened to me.”

Claire looked at him.

For the first time, she did not look afraid.

“You should have known I would eventually stop being afraid.”

Grant’s face darkened.

Then every screen in the room suddenly changed.

The crowd gasped.

A video appeared.

Security footage.

A woman entering a restricted office.

Claire.

The room erupted.

Whispers spread instantly.

Grant released her arm and stepped away.

Perfect timing.

Perfect acting.

“My God…”

His voice was filled with disappointment.

“Claire.”

She stared at the screen.

Horrified.

Because she knew the footage was fake.

But everyone else did not.

Grant turned toward the guests.

“I never wanted to believe she was capable of this.”

Claire looked at him.

Her heart dropped.

He was doing exactly what he always did.

Turning himself into the victim.

“I think she needs help.”

The words echoed through the room.

Security moved closer.

Claire looked around.

Everyone was staring.

Judging.

Doubting.

Just as Grant planned.

Then Vincent noticed something.

One tiny detail.

A mistake.

The footage showed Claire entering the office at 10:32 p.m.

But Vincent remembered something.

At 10:32 p.m., Claire was not there.

She was with him.

In his office.

Discussing the medical records.

The recording was impossible.

And Grant had forgotten one thing.

Vincent Blackwood never forgot details.

He looked at Claire.

Then at Grant.

The trap had been revealed.

But Vincent knew something else.

Grant had not created this situation just to frame Claire.

There was another reason.

A deeper plan.

And whatever that plan was…

It involved Ethan Bennett.

Because the patient transfer record connected to Claire’s fake account was scheduled for that exact night.

The name on the file was the only thing Vincent needed to see.

Ethan Bennett.

The room continued to fall apart around them.

But Vincent no longer heard the accusations.

He only heard one thought.

Grant Whitmore had not just attacked Claire.

May you like

He had used her brother as bait.

And now Vincent Blackwood was done playing by the rules.
