Chapter 2 - The Fiancée Who Was Trapped By A Monster

Claire Bennett had learned a long time ago that the most dangerous smiles were not the ones worn by cruel men.
They were the ones worn by men everyone trusted.
Grant Whitmore had mastered that smile.
The kind that made strangers believe he was kind.
The kind that made reporters describe him as a hero.
The kind that made wealthy donors open their wallets without asking questions.
The kind that made Claire’s stomach turn every time she saw it.
Because she knew what existed behind it.
The world saw Dr. Grant Whitmore as a miracle worker.
Claire saw the man who locked every door without ever touching a key.
The man who could destroy someone’s future while pretending he was helping them.
The man who had convinced her that leaving him meant losing the only chance her little brother had to survive.
And tonight, beneath the golden lights of the ballroom, she had to stand beside him and pretend everything was perfect.
The doors opened.
The sound of hundreds of conversations surrounded them.
The charity gala was already in full motion.
Crystal chandeliers illuminated the room.
Cameras flashed.
People laughed.
Everyone looked beautiful.
Everyone looked happy.
Claire stepped inside beside Grant.
His hand immediately found the small of her back.
To anyone watching, it looked affectionate.
A loving gesture from a devoted fiancé.
But Claire knew better.
His fingers tightened slightly.
Not enough for anyone else to notice.
Just enough for her to understand.
A warning.
Smile.
Stand straight.
Do not speak.
Claire lifted the corners of her mouth.
She had become very good at pretending.
“Everyone is excited to see you,” Grant whispered.
His voice was gentle.
Almost loving.
“You know how much they admire us.”
Claire stared ahead.
The room blurred slightly.
She hated that he could still make her feel small.
She hated that after everything, a single sentence from him could remind her of everything she had to lose.
Ethan.
Her little brother.
The only family she had left.
The reason she was still standing here.
The reason she was still wearing the ring.
The reason she had survived every insult, every threat, every silent punishment.
Because Grant had access to the one thing she could not risk losing.
A chance.
A surgery.
A future.
“Claire.”
She looked at him.
Grant smiled.
“Try to look happier.”
His thumb pressed lightly against her side.
Exactly where the bruise was hidden beneath her blouse.
Her breath caught.
Only for a second.
But Vincent saw it.
Across the ballroom, Vincent Blackwood stood among the guests.
Motionless.
Silent.
While everyone else applauded Grant’s arrival, Vincent did not move.
He did not smile.
He did not pretend.
His eyes remained fixed on Claire.
And for the first time in years, people around him noticed something unusual.
Vincent Blackwood was angry.
Not the controlled anger of a businessman negotiating a difficult deal.
Not the cold anger that made competitors disappear from the market.
Something personal.
Something dangerous.
His assistant, Marcus, approached carefully.
“Mr. Blackwood.”
Vincent did not look away.
“Find everything about Grant Whitmore.”
Marcus paused.
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
His voice was quiet.
“Medical records. Financial records. Foundation transactions. Personal history.”
Marcus studied his expression.
“You think he is hiding something?”
Vincent finally looked at him.
“I know he is.”
A few feet away, Grant stepped onto the stage.
The crowd immediately became silent.
The hero had arrived.
The surgeon who saved children.
The man who dedicated his life to helping others.
At least, that was the story everyone believed.
“Tonight,” Grant began, standing beneath the lights, “is not about me.”
The audience smiled.
Claire stood beside the stage.
Perfect posture.
Perfect expression.
A perfect lie.
“It is about hope.”
Applause filled the room.
Grant continued.
“Every child deserves a chance. Every family deserves support. That is why our foundation exists.”
More applause.
Vincent watched carefully.
He had met thousands of powerful people.
He knew how they spoke.
How they moved.
How they manipulated.
Grant was good.
Very good.
He knew exactly what people wanted to hear.
And that made him more dangerous.
“My greatest blessing,” Grant said, turning toward Claire, “has been having someone beside me who believes in this mission.”
The cameras moved toward her.
Claire smiled.
Grant reached for her hand.
The diamond ring reflected beneath the chandelier.
Everyone admired it.
Everyone except Vincent.
Because he saw what no one else saw.
Claire’s fingers were trembling.
Barely.
But trembling.
Grant squeezed her hand.
The crowd applauded.
Vincent remained silent.
Then something unexpected happened.
Claire looked directly at him.
Only for a second.
A tiny movement.
Almost invisible.
But Vincent noticed.
She was not asking him to save her.
She was telling him something.
Be careful.
A few minutes later, Grant continued his speech while Claire stepped away from the stage.
She needed air.
She needed one moment where she did not have to pretend.
She walked toward the hallway leading to the private offices.
But before she reached the door, Vincent appeared.
“You should not be alone with him.”
Claire stopped.
Her heart immediately started beating faster.
“Vincent…”
“You knew he was dangerous.”
It was not a question.
Claire looked down.
“I knew he was powerful.”
“That is not the same thing.”
She gave a small, tired laugh.
“You think powerful men and dangerous men are different?”
Vincent became silent.
Because he knew the answer.
Claire looked toward the ballroom.
“Do you know what happens when someone like me fights someone like Grant?”
“What?”
“They lose.”
Vincent stepped closer.
“No.”
Claire looked at him.
“They lose when nobody believes them.”
That sentence stayed between them.
Because Vincent understood.
People believed Grant.
That was the problem.
The city loved him.
The hospital protected him.
The media celebrated him.
And Claire?
Claire was just the woman standing beside him.
The woman everyone would question.
The woman everyone would blame.
“You should have told me,” Vincent said.
Claire’s eyes softened.
“Would you have listened?”
“Yes.”
The answer came immediately.
No hesitation.
That surprised her.
Vincent rarely gave anyone anything freely.
Especially promises.
Claire looked away.
“That is what scares me.”
“What?”
“That you mean it.”
For a moment, Vincent had no response.
Because Claire understood something about him that most people did not.
He was not frightening because he lacked emotions.
He was frightening because he had spent years controlling them.
And now she was the one thing he could not control.
A sound interrupted them.
Footsteps.
They turned.
Charlotte Whitmore stood at the end of the hallway.
Her expression was polite.
But her eyes were calculating.
“I was wondering where you disappeared to.”
Claire immediately stepped back.
“I needed some air.”
Charlotte smiled.
“Of course.”
Her gaze moved between Claire and Vincent.
A little too carefully.
“Mr. Blackwood, your concern for our guests is admirable.”
Vincent stared at her.
“And your concern for Claire?”
The smile on Charlotte’s face remained.
But it became colder.
“Claire is family.”
Vincent noticed the choice of words.
Not friend.
Not future sister-in-law.
Family.
Interesting.
Charlotte approached Claire.
“Grant is looking for you.”
Claire nodded.
“I’m coming.”
Charlotte left.
But before she disappeared, she looked back once.
A warning.
Claire noticed.
Vincent noticed too.
“What does she know?” he asked.
Claire’s face changed.
“I don’t know.”
But Vincent knew she was lying.
Not because she wanted to deceive him.
Because she was afraid.
The night continued.
The music continued.
The guests continued smiling.
But beneath the perfect event, something had shifted.
Vincent returned to the ballroom.
Marcus approached him with a tablet.
“I found something unusual.”
Vincent looked at the screen.
“What?”
Marcus lowered his voice.
“The foundation’s medical transportation company.”
Vincent frowned.
“There are two companies with almost identical names.”
“Same address.”
“Same owner?”
Marcus hesitated.
“That is the strange part.”
He turned the screen.
“One is owned by a man named Grant Whitmore.”
Vincent looked closer.
“And the other?”
Marcus’s expression darkened.
“An anonymous company connected to several patient transfers.”
Vincent’s eyes narrowed.
“Which patients?”
Marcus scrolled.
Then stopped.
“Your question has an answer.”
A silence followed.
Vincent looked at the list.
Then his expression changed.
Because among the names was one he recognized.
Ethan Bennett.
Claire’s little brother.
The boy whose surgery depended on Grant Whitmore.
Vincent slowly looked across the ballroom.
At Claire.
At Grant.
At the perfect couple everyone admired.
And suddenly, he understood.
This was not just about abuse.
This was not just about control.
Grant Whitmore had built an entire system around keeping people afraid.
And Claire was only one of the people trapped inside it.
Vincent closed the tablet.
“Find everything.”
Marcus nodded.
“How far do you want to go?”
Vincent looked at Claire.
Then at Grant’s smiling face on the stage.
His answer was immediate.
“As far as necessary.”
Because Vincent Blackwood had spent his entire life destroying enemies who threatened him.
But Grant Whitmore had done something different.
May you like
He had hurt someone Vincent cared about.
And that was a mistake no one had ever survived.
