Chapter 6 - The Doctor Who Sold My Secret

Dr. Harrison Hayes dropped his coffee when he saw me standing outside his office.
Then he whispered:
"Helena… you weren’t supposed to find out."
I placed the old file from Room 17 on his desk.
Inside was a payment record with his name on it.
But beneath the transaction was one detail that changed everything:
"Subject: Helena Jenkins."
I finally understood.
I was never chosen by accident.
The hallway outside Dr. Hayes’s office felt colder than usual.
Maybe it was because I finally knew.
Or maybe it was because some part of me had always suspected there was something wrong.
The first time Hayes grabbed my arm in that hospital break room, I thought he was desperate.
I thought he was a doctor trapped by gambling debt.
I thought he was a coward who made one terrible choice because he was afraid.
But now I stood outside his office holding proof that he had planned everything.
My hands tightened around the file.
For weeks, I had been trying to understand why my life changed the moment Adrien Russo entered it.
Why me?
Why a nurse?
Why someone with no connection to the Russo family?
The answer was standing behind that door.
Dr. Harrison Hayes.
The man who started everything.
I knocked once.
No answer.
I opened the door.
Hayes looked up from his desk.
The color disappeared from his face.
"Helena."
His voice was different.
Not the nervous voice I remembered.
Not the desperate doctor who begged me to help him.
This was the voice of someone caught.
"You shouldn’t be here."
I closed the door behind me.
"That’s funny."
He stared.
"Because that’s exactly what everyone keeps telling me."
I placed the file on his desk.
His eyes moved toward it.
And I watched the fear appear.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
"What is this?"
"You know what it is."
His mouth opened.
Then closed.
I pushed the file closer.
"Room 17."
His expression changed instantly.
For the first time, I knew I had the right answer.
"You found it."
I stared at him.
"You knew about it?"
Hayes looked away.
That was enough.
My heart started beating faster.
"How long?"
"Helena—"
"How long did you know?"
He sighed.
Then he sat down.
The man who once seemed powerful suddenly looked exhausted.
"I didn't want you involved."
I almost laughed.
"You kidnapped me."
His eyes closed.
"I didn't have a choice."
"Everyone says that."
I opened the file.
Inside were copies of transactions.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
And one name repeated over and over.
Harrison Hayes.
"You were being paid by someone in the Russo family."
Silence.
Then he whispered:
"Yes."
My stomach dropped.
"Who?"
He looked at me.
"I don't know."
I shook my head.
"No."
"Helena."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"You don't get to say you don't know."
His expression became desperate.
"I swear."
"Then why did you choose me?"
That question changed everything.
Because that was the one he didn't want to answer.
I saw it.
The hesitation.
The guilt.
And suddenly, I understood.
This was never about saving Adrien.
Not completely.
It was about me.
"Why me?"
Hayes looked down.
Then he said the words I had been afraid to hear.
"Because Adrien Russo was already broken."
I froze.
"What?"
"He hadn't slept in months. He was losing control. His enemies knew it. His own people knew it."
Hayes swallowed.
"Someone wanted to find the one thing that could calm him."
My voice became quiet.
"And that was me?"
He nodded.
My chest tightened.
"No."
"Helena—"
"No."
I backed away.
"I wasn't a nurse who happened to save him."
The truth hit me like a physical blow.
"I was sent there."
Hayes didn't answer.
Because he didn't need to.
I turned away.
Everything suddenly felt different.
Every night.
Every conversation.
Every moment Adrien looked at me like I was the only safe thing in his world.
Was it real?
Or was I just part of someone's plan?
I left the office without another word.
The hospital hallway blurred around me.
I didn't remember walking.
I didn't remember getting outside.
I only remembered the black sedan waiting near the entrance.
Adrien was inside.
He knew immediately.
The moment I opened the door, his expression changed.
"What happened?"
I looked at him.
For a second, I wanted to lie.
I wanted to protect him.
But I was tired of secrets.
"Did you know?"
His face became still.
"Know what?"
"That I was sent to you."
The silence was immediate.
That was the answer.
My heart sank.
"You knew."
"No."
The word came quickly.
Too quickly.
"I knew someone arranged it."
I stared.
"But I didn't know it was you."
"How long?"
He looked away.
"Adrien."
"Since last night."
I felt hurt.
Angry.
Confused.
"You knew and you didn't tell me?"
"I was trying to find out the truth first."
"By letting me keep believing a lie?"
His jaw tightened.
"I was trying to protect you."
I shook my head.
"Everyone says that."
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
But I couldn't stop.
"Everyone keeps making choices for me."
My voice cracked.
"I was kidnapped."
"I was threatened."
"I was used."
Then I looked directly at him.
"And I thought you were the one person who didn't."
Adrien looked away.
For a moment, he looked like the man in the nightmare.
The man who lost everything.
"I didn't know how to tell you."
That answer made me quiet.
Because it sounded honest.
Not like an excuse.
Like a confession.
I sat down.
"Tell me everything."
He was silent.
Then he spoke.
"The night my father died, there were people inside my family trying to replace him."
He looked at me.
"They needed someone close to me."
"Someone I would trust."
My stomach tightened.
"And they found me."
He nodded.
"They thought if they could control me, they could control everything."
I looked down.
"And I was the test."
Adrien’s expression changed.
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
His voice became stronger.
"You were not a weapon."
I looked at him.
"Then what was I?"
He didn't hesitate.
"The first real thing in my life that wasn't built on fear."
I stopped.
The words affected me more than I wanted.
Because I believed him.
And that scared me.
Before I could answer, Adrien’s phone rang.
Mateo.
Adrien immediately answered.
"Where are you?"
A pause.
Then his face changed.
"That's impossible."
I looked at him.
"What happened?"
He ended the call.
"Mateo found Hayes."
My body went cold.
"Where?"
Adrien looked at me.
"The old hospital storage building."
I knew that place.
The abandoned section of the hospital that had been closed for years.
The place where nobody went.
"Why there?"
Adrien stood.
"Because that's where they kept the records."
"What records?"
His eyes met mine.
"The records of everyone they used."
The drive there was silent.
Neither of us spoke.
Because both of us understood.
The truth we were looking for was waiting.
But so was whoever had been hiding it.
When we arrived, the building was dark.
Too dark.
Adrien stepped out first.
I followed.
He turned.
"No."
"I’m coming."
"Helena."
"No."
I looked at him.
"You don’t get to protect me by leaving me behind anymore."
For a moment, he just stared.
Then he nodded.
Inside, the old storage room smelled like dust and forgotten memories.
Mateo stood near a table.
But he wasn't alone.
Dr. Hayes was there.
And his face was covered in fear.
Adrien walked closer.
"What happened?"
Mateo looked at him.
"I found the person who hired him."
Adrien froze.
"Who?"
Mateo looked at me.
Then at Adrien.
And said:
"The person who planned everything was never trying to destroy you."
A pause.
"They were trying to create you."
The lights suddenly went out.
A sound echoed from the darkness.
A slow clap.
Someone was inside the room.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
"Good job, Adrien."
My blood turned cold.
Because I knew that voice.
It was someone who had been near Adrien’s family for years.
Someone who knew every secret.
Someone who should have been dead.
"Now you finally understand why I chose Helena."
The emergency lights flickered on.
May you like
And Adrien whispered one name:
"My father."
