Chapter 10 - The Choice Between Blood and Love

Mateo stood in the doorway of the warehouse.

The man Adrien trusted for years.

The man who protected him.

The man who knew every secret.

And the man everyone believed betrayed him.

Adrien slowly raised his weapon.

But Mateo didn’t move.

He just looked tired.

Like he had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

"Adrien."

His voice was quiet.

Almost apologetic.

Adrien’s eyes were cold.

"Say it."

Mateo looked around the room.

At Luca.

At me.

At Toby.

Then back at Adrien.

"You finally know."

The words made Adrien’s expression change.

Not anger.

Pain.

"You knew."

Mateo swallowed.

"Yes."

The warehouse became silent.

I held Toby closer.

He was confused.

He didn’t understand the world he had been pulled into.

He only knew the adults around him were carrying years of secrets.

"How long?"

Adrien asked.

Mateo looked down.

"Since the beginning."

Adrien laughed once.

A broken sound.

"The beginning of what?"

Mateo didn't answer.

Adrien stepped forward.

"The beginning of my father's death?"

Silence.

"The beginning of Helena being dragged into this?"

Silence.

"The beginning of my entire life being a lie?"

Mateo closed his eyes.

"Yes."

That one word destroyed something.

I saw it happen.

Adrien Russo had survived bullets.

Betrayals.

Enemies.

But hearing the truth from someone he loved was different.

It hurt in a way no weapon could.

"Why?"

Adrien whispered.

Mateo looked at him.

"Because I failed your father."

Adrien frowned.

"What?"

Mateo took a slow breath.

"Your father wasn't the first person who wanted to control you."

The room felt colder.

"Before Luca. Before the explosion. Before everything."

He looked at Adrien.

"There were people inside the family who wanted to use you as a symbol."

Adrien said nothing.

"You were young."

Mateo continued.

"Your father knew they would come after you."

"So he created a plan."

I looked at him.

"The plan was me?"

Mateo nodded.

"And Helena."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

Mateo looked at me.

"Your mother was involved because she discovered what they were doing."

My breath caught.

"My mother?"

"She found evidence."

Mateo continued.

"Evidence that powerful people were trying to turn Adrien into something he wasn't."

Adrien’s jaw tightened.

"And she disappeared because of it."

Mateo nodded.

"Your mother helped hide information that could destroy them."

Luca stepped forward.

"And that is why I brought everyone here."

Everyone turned.

Luca looked at Adrien.

"You needed to know the truth."

Adrien looked at him.

"You kidnapped a child."

Luca's expression changed slightly.

"I never intended to hurt him."

I stepped forward.

"You still used him."

Luca looked at me.

"I know."

For the first time, he sounded human.

Not powerful.

Not mysterious.

Just tired.

"I spent years trying to correct what your families created."

I shook my head.

"You became exactly like them."

Luca didn't answer.

Because he knew I was right.

Adrien lowered his weapon slightly.

"Where is the evidence?"

Mateo looked at him.

"The original files?"

Adrien nodded.

"The proof."

Mateo looked toward Luca.

Then back at Adrien.

"Hidden where nobody would look."

"Where?"

Mateo stared at me.

My heart stopped.

"No."

He nodded.

"Your mother's old house."

Everything became quiet.

A place I hadn't visited in years.

A place full of childhood memories.

A place I thought had nothing to do with this world.

But apparently…

My entire life had been connected to it.

Two hours later, we arrived.

The house was small.

Old.

Nothing like the Russo mansion.

Nothing like Adrien's world.

But when I stepped inside, I felt something.

A memory.

My mother's voice.

Her hands.

Her smile.

I walked toward the old bookshelf in the living room.

Mateo followed.

"She hid things here?"

He nodded.

"She knew nobody would search."

I touched the books.

Then stopped.

One book was different.

A worn medical textbook.

My mother's favorite.

I pulled it out.

Something fell behind it.

A small metal box.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside were letters.

Photographs.

And a recording device.

Adrien stood beside me.

"You don't have to listen."

I looked at him.

"Yes, I do."

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then my mother's voice.

My entire body froze.

"Helena, if you are hearing this..."

I covered my mouth.

Her voice.

After all these years.

"If you found this, it means the truth finally reached you."

Tears filled my eyes.

"I wanted to protect you."

The recording continued.

"I wanted you to have a normal life."

A pause.

"But some truths cannot stay buried forever."

Adrien listened silently.

"My daughter, the Russo family was never the enemy you believed."

I looked at him.

His expression changed.

"The enemy was the person who used both families."

The recording continued.

"The person who convinced Adrien's father that fear was the only way to survive."

My breathing stopped.

Then came the final words.

"The person responsible for everything was..."

The recording cut off.

Everyone froze.

"No."

Adrien picked up the device.

"That's impossible."

Mateo looked terrified.

Because he knew.

"What?"

I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then the door opened.

Slowly.

A figure stood outside.

Older.

Familiar.

Someone we never expected.

Dr. Harrison Hayes.

I felt the world stop.

"You."

Adrien’s face became dangerous.

Hayes looked at all of us.

"I tried to keep this buried."

My hands tightened.

"You started everything."

He looked at me.

"I was trying to stop it."

Adrien stepped forward.

"Explain."

Hayes looked at the recording.

"Your father and Luca weren't the ones who created the plan."

Silence.

"The person who controlled everything was someone above them."

"Who?"

Hayes looked at Adrien.

Then at me.

"Someone who knew both families."

My heart sank.

"Who?"

Hayes whispered the name.

A name that made everyone silent.

"Your uncle."

Adrien froze.

"My uncle died years ago."

Hayes shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"He changed his identity."

Mateo looked horrified.

"Impossible."

Hayes looked at him.

"He was the one who funded the explosion."

Adrien’s hands tightened.

All these years.

All these enemies.

All these betrayals.

And the person responsible had been hidden behind a fake death.

But this time…

Adrien didn't break.

He looked at me.

Then Toby.

Then the people standing around him.

The people who chose the truth over fear.

And I realized something.

The old Adrien Russo would have chased revenge.

The old Adrien would have burned everything down.

But this Adrien was different.

He lowered his weapon.

"What happens now?"

Nobody answered.

Because the choice belonged to him.

Finally, he spoke.

"We end it."

Not with violence.

Not with revenge.

With truth.

Months later, the remaining evidence exposed everything.

The hidden crimes.

The secret operations.

The people who manipulated two families for decades.

Adrien walked away from the empire his father built.

He didn't destroy it.

He transformed it.

The money that once funded fear became money that helped people.

The name Russo no longer meant terror.

It meant change.

Toby recovered completely.

He went back to school.

He still loved astronomy.

And every time he looked at the stars, he reminded me that even the darkest nights eventually ended.

As for Adrien…

He finally learned how to sleep.

Not because someone was beside him because of a deal.

Not because someone was paid to stay.

Because someone chose him.

Years after that first night, I stood beside him watching the Chicago skyline.

The same city that once represented everything he feared.

Now it represented everything he had survived.

"You’re thinking too much."

I smiled.

"You still know when I’m thinking?"

He looked at me.

"I always have."

I leaned against him.

"Do you regret it?"

"Regret what?"

"Meeting me."

Adrien looked almost offended.

Then he smiled.

The rare smile I had only seen a few times.

"No."

He took my hand.

"The worst night of my life brought me to the only person who ever made me want a better one."

And for the first time, Adrien Russo wasn't running from his past.

He wasn't fighting his father's shadow.

He wasn't trying to prove he was strong.

He was simply living.

With the woman who saved him.

With the family he built.

May you like

With the peace he never thought he deserved.
