Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Held The Final Piece

I used to think secrets had weight.

I imagined them like stones.

Heavy things people carried around until their backs broke.

But I was wrong.

Secrets were not heavy because they were difficult to hold.

They were heavy because they changed everything around them.

They changed the way you looked at people.

The way you remembered moments.

The way you questioned every smile, every promise, every quiet night that once felt safe.

The morning after Elena disappeared, I woke up before Damian.

That had never happened often.

Usually, he was the first one awake.

He lived his life like someone was always chasing him.

Early meetings.

Late calls.

Constant movement.

But that morning, he was asleep on the couch across from me.

Not because he chose comfort.

Because he refused to leave me alone.

I watched him for several minutes.

It was strange seeing him like that.

Without the expensive suit.

Without the carefully controlled expression.

Without the walls.

He looked younger.

Almost like the man I met years ago.

The man who had sat across from me at a small restaurant and spent three hours talking about books, music, and places he wanted to visit.

Not businesses.

Not power.

Not enemies.

Just dreams.

I wondered when he stopped being that man.

Or maybe the more painful question was:

When did I stop seeing him?

My phone vibrated.

A message from Marcus.

We found where Elena was taken.

My heart immediately tightened.

I looked toward Damian.

For a moment, I considered waking him.

Then I stopped.

Not because I didn’t trust him.

Because I needed to do something for myself.

For seven years, I had followed his lead.

His decisions.

His timing.

His rules.

This time, I wanted answers before fear arrived.

I walked into the kitchen and called Marcus.

He answered immediately.

“She’s alive.”

The relief came before I could stop it.

“Where is she?”

“We don’t know exactly.”

My expression changed.

“You said you found where she was taken.”

“We found the location. Not the people.”

I looked outside at the gray morning sky.

“Tell me.”

Marcus was silent.

Then he said:

“The old Voss property.”

The name meant nothing to me.

“What is that?”

“Before Elena disappeared, her family owned a private estate outside the city.”

“And?”

“And it was where she kept records.”

My stomach tightened.

“Records of what?”

“Everything.”

I looked toward the living room.

Damian was still asleep.

Everything.

That word felt impossible.

“Why would someone take her there?”

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Because they are not looking for money.”

I understood immediately.

“They want information.”

“Yes.”

I ended the call.

For several minutes, I stood there.

The old version of me would have waited.

Waited for Damian to wake.

Waited for him to explain.

Waited for permission.

But that woman was gone.

I walked back into the living room.

“Damian.”

His eyes opened instantly.

Not slowly.

Not confused.

Instantly alert.

The man was never truly asleep.

“What happened?”

I held his gaze.

“We found Elena.”

He sat up.

“She’s alive?”

“Yes.”

The tension in his face loosened.

Only slightly.

“Where?”

“The Voss property.”

Something changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You know that place.”

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

Damian stood.

“It’s where Elena kept everything.”

“Everything about you?”

He looked at me.

“Everything about everyone.”

There was something in his expression.

Something I had not seen before.

Concern.

Not for himself.

For Elena.

“She knew this would happen,” he said.

“What?”

“That if anyone wanted to destroy me, they would come for her.”

I crossed my arms.

“Then why didn’t you protect her?”

The question came out sharper than I intended.

But Damian did not become defensive.

He simply accepted it.

“Because I thought she was safer away from me.”

I looked at him.

“And was she?”

“No.”

The honesty hurt.

Again.

“I spent years believing distance was protection.”

He looked down.

“But sometimes distance just means you’re not there when someone needs you.”

That was the closest thing to regret I had ever heard from him.

We arrived at the Voss estate two hours later.

It was nothing like Damian’s world.

No modern glass.

No luxury.

No signs of wealth.

Just an old stone house surrounded by trees.

Beautiful.

Quiet.

Almost forgotten.

The kind of place that held memories.

Not appearances.

Marcus was already there with two trusted people.

When Damian stepped out of the car, everyone immediately looked toward him.

Not because he demanded attention.

Because his presence changed the atmosphere.

But this time, I noticed something different.

People did not just fear him.

They trusted him.

That confused me.

For years, I had only seen the darkness around Damian.

Now I was starting to see the complicated parts.

The people who stayed.

The people who believed in him.

The people who knew there was more beneath the rumors.

Marcus approached.

“We found signs she was here.”

“Is she inside?”

“We don’t know.”

Damian looked at the house.

And for a second, he looked haunted.

“You’ve been here before.”

It was not a question.

He nodded.

“Yes.”

“With Elena?”

“Yes.”

I watched his face.

There was no anger.

No discomfort.

Just memory.

“She wanted a normal life,” he said quietly.

The words surprised me.

“Did you?”

He looked at the house.

“I wanted her to have one.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

He was silent.

Then:

“No.”

The honesty was painful.

“I never believed I deserved one.”

I looked at him.

And suddenly, everything made sense.

Damian did not just hide secrets because he wanted control.

He hid them because somewhere deep inside, he believed people who loved him would eventually get hurt.

So he kept them away.

And in doing so, he hurt them anyway.

Inside the house, we found the first clue.

A hidden room behind a bookshelf.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Files.

Not just about Damian.

About everyone connected to him.

Marcus picked up one folder.

His face changed.

“What?”

He opened it.

Then looked at Damian.

“She knew.”

“About what?”

Marcus handed him the file.

Damian read it silently.

I watched the color disappear from his face.

“What is it?”

He didn’t answer.

“Damian.”

Finally, he looked at me.

“The person behind this isn’t someone trying to take my empire.”

“Then what do they want?”

His eyes moved back to the documents.

“They want to erase the past.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What past?”

Before he could answer, a sound came from upstairs.

A floorboard.

Everyone froze.

Damian immediately moved in front of me.

This time, I did not argue.

Because I understood something.

Protection was not always control.

Sometimes it was simply love expressed badly.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Then a voice.

“I knew you would come here.”

Elena.

We rushed upstairs.

She stood in the doorway.

Alive.

Tired.

But standing.

Damian stopped.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Seven years of history existed between them.

Pain.

Love.

Loss.

Regret.

Then Elena looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I shook my head.

“You’re alive. That’s what matters.”

Her eyes softened.

Then she looked at Damian.

“You finally told her.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

A sad smile crossed Elena’s face.

“Then maybe there’s hope for you after all.”

Damian frowned.

“What happened?”

Elena looked toward the files.

“They weren’t after the information.”

Silence.

“They were after me.”

“Why?”

She looked at both of us.

“Because I know the truth about Damian’s father.”

The room went still.

Damian’s expression changed.

“What truth?”

Elena’s eyes filled with sadness.

“The truth that your entire empire was built on a lie.”

Nobody spoke.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Damian Cross was never supposed to inherit that world.”

A pause.

“He was supposed to destroy it.”

I looked at Damian.

And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Shock.

May you like

Because whatever Elena was about to reveal…

It was something Damian himself had never known.
