Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Knew His Secrets

I arrived twenty minutes early.

That was something Damian had taught me without ever saying the words.

In his world, being late meant being careless.

Being careless meant being vulnerable.

And vulnerable people did not survive around men like Damian Cross.

The meeting place Marcus chose was an old private club hidden between two buildings on the quieter side of Manhattan.

There was no sign outside.

No name on the door.

No indication that anyone important entered or left.

That was exactly the kind of place Damian preferred.

Places that existed without being noticed.

I stepped inside wearing a simple black coat and carrying no jewelry.

For years, I had dressed according to Damian’s world.

Elegant gowns.

Designer dresses.

Expensive watches.

Everything polished.

Everything appropriate.

Today, I wanted to look like myself.

Not Damian Cross’s wife.

Just me.

The woman who had finally started asking questions.

Marcus was waiting near the back corner of the room.

He stood when he saw me.

That alone told me how serious this was.

Marcus Reyes was not a man who stood for people.

He was older than Damian by almost twenty years, with silver hair, sharp eyes, and the quiet presence of someone who had spent his entire life watching powerful men make dangerous decisions.

“Thank you for coming,” he said.

I sat across from him.

“You said you found out who sent the picture.”

Marcus looked around before answering.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

He did not respond immediately.

Instead, he placed a photograph on the table.

A woman.

Beautiful.

Confident.

Standing beside Damian years earlier.

I recognized him instantly.

Even younger, Damian looked exactly the same.

The same dark eyes.

The same controlled expression.

The same ability to make everyone around him look less certain.

But the woman beside him was someone I had never seen.

“Her name is Elena Voss,” Marcus said.

I looked at the picture again.

“His first wife?”

Marcus nodded.

The words felt strange.

Not because Damian had been married before.

People had pasts.

I understood that.

What bothered me was not the marriage.

It was the secret.

“Why didn’t I know about her?”

Marcus looked down.

“Because Damian wanted it that way.”

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

My fingers tightened around the edge of the photograph.

“How long were they married?”

“Three years.”

“And what happened?”

Marcus was quiet.

For a moment, I thought he would refuse.

Then he leaned back.

“Damian was different back then.”

I almost smiled.

“Different how?”

“Less careful.”

That surprised me.

Because I could not imagine Damian being anything except controlled.

“He trusted people too easily,” Marcus continued. “Especially people he loved.”

The words felt strange.

A man like Damian?

Trusting?

It seemed impossible.

“What happened to her?”

Marcus looked toward the window.

“She discovered things about his business.”

I waited.

“And?”

“She wanted him to leave.”

My expression changed.

“Leave?”

“Yes.”

“His empire?”

“Everything.”

I looked at the photograph.

“And he refused.”

Marcus did not answer.

But his silence told me enough.

“What happened after?”

His jaw tightened.

“Three days later, Elena disappeared.”

The room suddenly felt colder.

“You said she was alive.”

“She is.”

“Then why did everyone think she was gone?”

“Because Damian made sure nobody looked for her.”

A thousand thoughts crossed my mind.

The man I married.

The man who held my hand when I was sick.

The man who remembered every detail about me.

The same man who could erase someone from his life completely.

I looked at Marcus.

“Are you telling me my husband forced her away?”

“No.”

His answer was immediate.

“I’m telling you Damian believed he was protecting her.”

I frowned.

“That sounds like something a dangerous man would tell himself.”

Marcus looked at me carefully.

“Exactly.”

Silence filled the space between us.

Then he continued.

“Damian’s greatest flaw has always been the same.”

“What?”

“He believes love gives him the right to decide what is best for someone else.”

The sentence hit harder than I expected.

Because suddenly, I remembered every time Damian had made decisions for me.

The charities I should attend.

The people I should avoid.

The places I should not go.

At the time, I called it protection.

Now I wondered if it had always been control.

“Where is Elena?”

Marcus hesitated.

“She wants to meet you.”

I looked up.

“Why?”

“Because she knows something about the hotel.”

My heart stopped.

The key.

The photograph.

The secret.

“What does she know?”

Marcus looked at me.

“She knows who Damian was meeting there.”

The air left my lungs.

“Who?”

Marcus reached into his jacket and placed another photograph on the table.

This one was newer.

Much newer.

The Halcyon Hotel entrance.

Damian.

And another person.

A woman.

I stared at the image.

But confusion replaced the anger I expected.

Because I recognized her.

Not personally.

But from somewhere.

She was not a stranger.

She was someone I had seen before.

“Who is she?”

Marcus answered quietly.

“Camille Laurent.”

The name meant nothing.

Then he added:

“She works for one of Damian’s biggest rivals.”

My stomach tightened.

“So he was meeting an enemy?”

“Yes.”

“Then why hide it from me?”

Marcus looked away.

“Because the truth is complicated.”

I hated those words.

Complicated.

People used that word when the truth was dangerous.

“When will I meet Elena?”

Marcus looked at his watch.

“She’s waiting.”

I followed him through a side entrance into another room.

And for the first time in my life, I met the woman who came before me.

Elena Voss stood near the window.

She was not what I expected.

I expected anger.

Bitterness.

Someone who hated Damian.

Instead, I saw someone calm.

Someone who had already survived the worst part of her story.

She turned when I entered.

For a moment, we simply looked at each other.

Two women.

Two different chapters.

Same man.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

The words confused me.

“For what?”

“For letting you find out this way.”

I studied her face.

“You sent the photo.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Elena walked toward the table.

“Because Damian would never tell you.”

The honesty of the answer unsettled me.

“What exactly am I supposed to know?”

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she said:

“That the hotel key was not for another woman.”

I froze.

“What?”

Elena continued.

“But it was still a betrayal.”

I waited.

Because somehow, that was worse.

A simple affair would have been easier.

A person to hate.

A clear enemy.

But Elena was telling me something else.

Something more complicated.

“What was he doing there?”

She looked at the photograph of Damian and Camille.

“He was trying to protect you.”

I almost laughed.

“By lying to me?”

“Yes.”

The answer came quietly.

“And that is what Damian does.”

My expression hardened.

“He hurts people to save them.”

Elena nodded.

“Exactly.”

The room became silent.

I thought about the years I spent believing Damian’s secrets were because he was protecting me.

I thought about every locked door.

Every unanswered question.

Every time he said:

Trust me.

Maybe the most dangerous words in the world were not lies.

Maybe they were promises from someone who believed he was allowed to break them.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

Elena looked surprised.

“Are you sure?”

I looked at the photograph.

At the man I loved.

The man I no longer understood.

“Yes.”

My voice was steady.

“Because I spent seven years protecting a man whose secrets I never asked to see.”

I stood.

“Now I want the truth.”

For the first time, Elena smiled slightly.

Not happily.

Almost sadly.

“Then you’re ready.”

“Ready for what?”

She looked toward the window.

“For the reason Damian married you.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Elena turned back.

“The reason he chose you was not because you were the safest person in his life.”

A pause.

“It was because you were the only person who could destroy everything he built.”

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

Elena’s eyes softened.

“It means Damian Cross has spent his entire life controlling fear.”

She stepped closer.

“But you were the one thing he could never control.”

The words followed me long after I left.

Because for the first time, I considered a possibility I had never allowed myself to believe.

Maybe Damian did not keep secrets because he did not trust me.

Maybe he kept secrets because he trusted me too much.

And somehow, that frightened him more.

But one question remained.

May you like

If Damian was truly trying to protect me...

Why did he let me believe I was fighting for our marriage alone?
