Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Never Died

The door opened.
Not by itself.
Someone was inside.
I froze with my hand still near the handle.
The message on my phone was still glowing.
"Don't let him open it."
But it was already too late.
The metal door slowly moved inward.
A cold stream of air escaped from the room.
Noah grabbed my arm.
"She's there."
I looked at him.
"Who?"
His eyes filled with tears.
"Mommy."
My heart stopped.
Because I had already seen Elena.
In the photograph.
In the video.
In Adrian's memories.
But those were all impossible.
Elena Vale was dead.
Everyone knew that.
Everyone except Noah.
I pushed the door open wider.
The room behind it was small.
Not like the hidden passage.
Not like the secret bedroom.
This was an office.
A private investigation room.
There were dozens of files stacked on shelves.
A computer.
Security footage.
Newspapers.
And on the wall...
pictures of people.
I stepped inside.
The first thing I noticed was the photographs.
Not random photographs.
Surveillance photographs.
Pictures of the Vale mansion.
Pictures of Adrian.
Pictures of Lucas.
Pictures of Noah.
And one person appeared in almost every picture.
Elena.
Alive.
Watching.
Investigating.
I slowly turned around.
"Adrian."
He was standing behind me.
His face had gone completely pale.
He walked into the room.
Slowly.
Like every step hurt.
"No."
His voice was barely a whisper.
"This isn't possible."
Margaret stood near the doorway.
She looked down.
"You needed to know eventually."
Adrian turned toward her.
"You knew?"
The older woman didn't answer.
That was enough.
Adrian's expression changed.
"You knew she was alive?"
The room became silent.
I looked at Margaret.
Then at Adrian.
Then at Noah.
The child who had spent years being called dangerous.
A child who had been telling the truth the entire time.
Margaret finally spoke.
"I knew Elena survived."
Adrian stepped back.
Like the words physically hit him.
"Where is she?"
Margaret looked at the floor.
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"I'm not."
Adrian's voice became colder.
"Margaret."
The entire mansion seemed to shake with the weight of his anger.
But Margaret didn't move.
"I helped her disappear."
I looked at her.
"You helped her fake her death?"
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
Noah started crying.
"Why did Mommy leave me?"
Nobody answered immediately.
And that silence hurt more than any explanation.
I knelt beside him.
"Noah..."
He wiped his tears.
"She promised she would come back."
My heart broke.
Because children didn't understand fake deaths.
They only understood losing someone.
I looked at Adrian.
"You let him believe she was gone."
His jaw tightened.
"I believed she was gone too."
"Because Margaret helped hide it?"
"No."
He looked at the photographs.
"Because Elena wanted me to believe it."
That surprised me.
"Why?"
Adrian walked toward one of the files.
He picked it up.
Inside were documents.
Medical records.
Financial reports.
Photos.
Everything connected to Lucas.
"Because my brother was trying to destroy my family."
I looked at the papers.
"Your brother?"
Adrian nodded.
"Lucas wasn't dead."
He opened a file.
"He disappeared after discovering Elena was investigating him."
I frowned.
"Investigating what?"
Adrian looked at Noah.
"His birth."
The room went quiet.
I looked at the little boy.
"What does Noah's birth have to do with Lucas?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Instead, he handed me a document.
I read the first page.
Then I stopped.
Because it wasn't a normal birth record.
It was a DNA report.
My hands became cold.
"Adrian..."
He looked at me.
"What?"
I looked at the result.
"Lucas is not Noah's uncle."
Adrian's face changed.
"What are you saying?"
I looked at the paper again.
The words were clear.
Lucas Vale.
Biological father.
Noah Vale.
The room disappeared for a second.
I couldn't hear anything.
Only my own heartbeat.
"No."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Give me that."
I didn't move.
"Adrian..."
"Give me the paper."
His voice broke.
Not anger.
Pain.
I handed it to him.
He read it.
Again.
And again.
Like the words would change.
They didn't.
Noah looked at him.
"Daddy?"
Adrian immediately folded the paper.
He turned away.
Because he didn't want his son to see his face.
I understood then.
The rumors.
The anger.
The fear.
Everything.
Adrian had spent years protecting a child who might not share his blood.
But he never stopped being his father.
A sound came from the computer.
Everyone turned.
The screen had turned on.
A video file was playing.
The title appeared.
"Elena - Final Message."
Adrian moved toward it.
"No."
His voice was different.
Terrified.
The video started.
Elena appeared.
She looked tired.
Older.
Like she had been running for a long time.
But she was alive.
And she was looking directly at Adrian.
"If you are watching this..."
She paused.
"Then Noah has finally found the truth."
Adrian stood frozen.
Elena continued.
"Adrian, I need you to listen carefully."
She looked away from the camera.
Like someone was nearby.
"I didn't leave because I stopped loving you."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"But I had to disappear because Lucas discovered Noah was alive."
My breath stopped.
Elena looked back at the camera.
"Lucas knows the truth about Noah's birth."
The screen flickered.
Then Elena whispered:
"He knows Noah is the only person who can expose him."
The video glitched.
A loud noise filled the room.
Then Elena's face returned.
But this time...
She looked scared.
"Adrian, if Lucas finds Noah..."
The video cut.
Static.
Then one final sentence appeared on the screen.
Written text.
Not spoken.
"DO NOT TRUST THE PERSON STANDING BESIDE YOU."
Everyone looked at each other.
Nobody moved.
Because there were only four people in the room.
Me.
Adrian.
Margaret.
Noah.
And suddenly...
the lights went out.
A second later, the computer screen turned back on.
A new message appeared.
Not from Elena.
From someone watching us.
May you like
It said:
"I told you not to open the door."
