The Mafia Boss's Broken Son / Chapter 3 / 7

Chapter 3 - The Voice Behind The Locked Door

The door opened.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Like it had been waiting for three years to breathe again.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I stood there beside Noah, staring into the darkness behind the wooden frame.

The room was not what I expected.

I expected something frightening.

Something connected to the rumors.

Something that would explain why eighteen nannies had run away.

But instead, I saw a room filled with memories.

A child's bedroom.

A woman's desk.

A wall covered with photographs.

Everything was frozen in time.

Like someone had left yesterday.

Not three years ago.

Noah stepped forward.

"Mommy."

His voice broke.

Adrian grabbed his shoulder.

"Noah, wait."

But the boy didn't listen.

He walked into the room.

And Adrian followed.

I followed too.

Because at that moment, I understood something.

The locked room wasn't hiding a monster.

It was hiding a family.

The first thing I noticed was the smell.

Old books.

Perfume.

Wood.

A familiar scent that made Adrian stop in the doorway.

His face changed.

Not the cold expression everyone knew.

Not the powerful man from the newspapers.

Just a husband remembering someone he lost.

"Elena..."

He whispered the name so quietly that I almost didn't hear it.

I looked at him.

"Your wife's name was Elena?"

He didn't answer.

His eyes were fixed on a photograph sitting on the desk.

A photograph of him.

And a woman.

A beautiful woman with the same warm smile Noah had.

She was standing beside Adrian.

Holding a baby.

Noah.

But something was different.

The picture was not a happy family photo.

There was something written on the back.

Adrian picked it up.

His hands shook.

I watched him turn the photograph over.

His expression changed immediately.

"What does it say?" I asked.

He didn't respond.

So I stepped closer.

The handwriting was Elena's.

Three words.

"Protect our son."

I looked at Noah.

Then back at Adrian.

"From who?"

Adrian placed the photo down.

"I don't know."

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

A man like Adrian Vale knew everything.

He knew what happened in his businesses.

He knew what happened on his streets.

He knew who worked for him and who betrayed him.

But now he was standing in a room belonging to his dead wife, looking completely lost.

"You really don't know?"

His eyes met mine.

"No."

That answer scared me.

Because I believed him.

A man could lie.

But fear was harder to fake.

Noah walked toward the desk.

He touched a small wooden box.

"Mommy kept this here."

Adrian immediately moved.

"Noah."

The boy looked at him.

"She told me if anything happened, I should give it to someone who believed me."

My heart tightened.

Because I understood what that meant.

A four-year-old child had been carrying a secret.

Waiting for someone to listen.

I knelt beside him.

"Can I see it?"

Noah looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

Slowly, he handed me the box.

It was small.

Old.

Locked.

There was no key.

I turned it over.

On the bottom was a symbol.

A small triangle with a line through it.

Adrian saw it.

And his entire body froze.

"You know that symbol?"

I asked.

He didn't answer.

"Adrian."

His jaw tightened.

"It's not possible."

"What isn't?"

He looked at the box.

"My wife destroyed that symbol years ago."

I frowned.

"Why?"

Before he could answer, Margaret spoke from the doorway.

"Because it belonged to the people who wanted Noah."

Everyone turned.

Margaret stood there quietly.

But this time, she wasn't afraid.

She looked tired.

Like she had carried this secret for too long.

Adrian's expression became cold.

"You lied to me."

Margaret looked at him.

"I protected your son."

"You knew Elena was hiding things."

"Yes."

"And you never told me?"

Her eyes filled with sadness.

"Because Elena didn't trust you."

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

A man like Adrian could survive enemies.

He could survive threats.

But hearing that his wife didn't trust him broke something inside him.

"Why?"

Margaret looked at Noah.

"Because she discovered the truth."

"What truth?"

Nobody answered.

That was becoming a pattern in this house.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone was protecting something.

And Noah was the only one who had been trying to tell the truth.

I opened the wooden box.

Inside was a small flash drive.

And a folded letter.

The letter had my name on it.

I froze.

"Clara."

Adrian looked at me.

"Why would Elena write your name?"

I didn't know.

I picked up the letter.

My hands felt suddenly heavy.

The envelope had been sealed.

The writing on the front was clear.

"For the woman who comes after me."

My stomach tightened.

Adrian stared at it.

"You weren't supposed to be here."

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

He didn't answer.

I opened the letter.

The first sentence made my blood run cold.

"If you are reading this, then Adrian failed to protect Noah."

The room went silent.

I looked at Adrian.

He looked away.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Just hurt.

I continued reading.

"Do not blame him yet."

I stopped.

That sentence changed everything.

Because Elena wasn't accusing Adrian.

She was warning me not to judge him.

The next line was written darker.

Like she had pressed the pen harder.

"The danger is not inside this house."

I looked around the room.

Then at the hallway.

"The danger is the person Adrian trusts most."

Everyone became still.

I slowly lowered the paper.

My eyes moved to Adrian.

"Who does she mean?"

He didn't answer.

But someone behind us did.

Margaret.

"She meant me."

I turned.

Margaret was crying.

Adrian looked shocked.

"No."

The older woman shook her head.

"Elena thought I was the only person who could keep Noah alive."

"Then why would she write that?"

Margaret looked at the letter.

"Because she knew someone would try to make you believe I betrayed her."

A sound came from the desk.

A small click.

Everyone turned.

The old computer monitor sitting in the corner suddenly turned on.

Nobody had touched it.

The screen was black.

Then a video appeared.

A woman appeared.

Elena.

Adrian stopped breathing.

"No..."

The video quality was old.

But the voice was clear.

She looked directly into the camera.

Like she knew someone would watch it someday.

"Adrian."

His eyes filled.

"I don't know when you will see this."

The woman on the screen paused.

"But if Noah is watching this with you..."

She looked down.

Her expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Then I failed."

Noah stepped closer.

"Mommy..."

Elena continued.

"You need to listen carefully."

The screen flickered.

The video glitched.

Then her voice became quieter.

"Do not trust the man who raised you."

Adrian went completely still.

I looked at him.

Because the sentence wasn't meant for Noah.

It was meant for him.

The video continued.

"Adrian, the truth about Noah's birth..."

The screen suddenly distorted.

Static filled the room.

Everyone watched.

Waiting.

Then the video came back.

But Elena was no longer sitting alone.

There was someone standing behind her.

Someone whose face was hidden.

Adrian stepped closer to the screen.

Because he recognized the person's voice.

The person behind Elena whispered one sentence.

May you like

And Adrian's face turned pale.

Because the voice belonged to the one person he thought was dead.
