Chapter 5 - The Man Who Knew My Mother’s Secret

The door opened slowly.
Nobody breathed.
The hidden room behind the old hallway revealed only darkness.
Adrien lifted his hand.
Every guard stopped moving.
"Nobody enters."
His voice was quiet.
But everyone listened.
I stood beside him, holding my mother's necklace tightly.
My mind was racing.
A stranger had taken pictures of me.
My dead mother had left a message.
Adrien knew the truth about her disappearance.
And now someone inside the mansion knew my name.
"Clara."
Adrien looked at me.
"Stay behind me."
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because five minutes earlier, I would have listened.
But after everything I had learned tonight, I was done standing behind people who knew the truth.
"No."
His eyes narrowed.
"No?"
"No."
I stepped forward.
"My whole life, people have been making decisions for me."
I looked at the open door.
"My mother hid things from me."
I looked at him.
"You hid things from me."
A pause.
"So I am not standing behind anyone anymore."
Something changed in Adrien's expression.
Not anger.
Understanding.
For the first time, he didn't tell me to move.
He simply nodded.
"Stay close."
We entered together.
The hidden room was nothing like the rest of the mansion.
No luxury.
No expensive furniture.
No signs of Adrien Moretti.
It looked abandoned.
Old shelves covered the walls.
Dust covered the floor.
A single desk sat in the center.
And on that desk...
were dozens of photographs.
My heart stopped.
I walked closer.
Every picture was of my mother.
Different years.
Different places.
Different moments.
But she wasn't alone.
Adrien was in several of them.
Younger.
Less controlled.
Almost like a different person.
I picked up one photo.
My mother was smiling.
Actually smiling.
I had forgotten what that looked like.
Because after I turned thirteen, she rarely smiled.
"She was happy with you."
Adrien's voice came from behind me.
I looked at him.
"You loved her."
The words surprised both of us.
Adrien looked away.
"That wasn't what happened."
"Then tell me what happened."
Silence.
Again.
I hated that silence.
I hated how every answer was always behind another locked door.
I grabbed another photo.
This one was different.
My mother was standing beside a man I didn't recognize.
He was wearing a dark suit.
Older than Adrien.
Cold expression.
Someone who looked powerful.
"Who is he?"
Adrien immediately took the picture from my hand.
Too quickly.
That scared me.
"Where did you get this?"
"It was on the desk."
His eyes stayed on the photo.
"Who is he?"
Adrien didn't answer.
One of the guards stepped closer.
"Boss..."
Adrien looked at him.
"Not now."
The guard hesitated.
Then lowered his voice.
"We need to talk."
Adrien walked away with him.
I watched them whisper.
Something about this man terrified Adrien.
And I needed to know why.
I walked around the room.
Looking for anything else.
Then I noticed something.
A small wooden box hidden behind the books.
I pulled it out.
Inside was an old envelope.
My name was written on it.
Again.
CLARA.
My fingers shook.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Not long.
Only a few lines.
But the handwriting...
I knew it.
My mother's handwriting.
Clara,
If you found this, it means I failed to keep you away from the truth.
I sat down.
My eyes moved across the words.
I need you to understand something.
Adrien Moretti did not hurt me.
He tried to protect me.
But protection became the reason you lost me.
Because the person hunting me was someone neither of us expected.
I stopped reading.
Someone neither of us expected.
I continued.
Trust your instincts.
Trust the person who shows you the truth, even when it hurts.
But never trust the person who makes you feel safe while hiding everything.
The letter ended there.
No name.
No explanation.
Nothing.
I folded it carefully.
Then I heard Adrien behind me.
"Where did you find that?"
I turned.
His face had changed.
He looked worried.
Not about himself.
About me.
"My mother wrote it."
He stepped closer.
"Give it to me."
"No."
The answer surprised him.
"No?"
"You have hidden enough from me."
His jaw tightened.
"Clara."
"Who is the man in the picture?"
No answer.
"Who was my mother running from?"
Still nothing.
I held up the letter.
"She said you tried to protect her."
Adrien froze.
"She wrote that?"
I nodded.
For a moment, something like relief appeared in his eyes.
Then it disappeared.
Because fear replaced it.
"She shouldn't have left that message."
"Why?"
He looked toward the door.
"Because now they know you found it."
The room suddenly felt colder.
"Who are they?"
Adrien didn't answer.
Instead, he walked to the desk and opened a hidden drawer.
Inside was a gun.
A passport.
And a file.
He picked up the file.
The cover had a name.
ELENA BENNETT.
My mother's name.
He opened it.
I expected documents.
Photos.
Evidence.
But what I saw made my entire body freeze.
A birth certificate.
Not mine.
Another child's.
Adrien noticed my expression.
"What?"
I pointed.
"There."
He looked down.
Then his face changed.
Because the name written on the document was:
CLARA BENNETT.
My name.
But the date of birth...
was wrong.
It was twelve years earlier.
I stared at the paper.
"No."
Adrien grabbed the document.
"That's impossible."
"What does it mean?"
He didn't answer.
"Adrien."
His eyes moved across the page.
Then slowly looked at me.
"Clara..."
"What?"
His voice was barely a whisper.
"This isn't your birth certificate."
I felt my stomach drop.
"Then whose is it?"
Before he could answer, the entire mansion shook.
A loud explosion came from upstairs.
The guards immediately moved.
"Boss!"
Adrien grabbed my arm.
"We need to go."
"What happened?"
He looked toward the hallway.
"Someone got inside."
We rushed back.
The mansion was chaos.
Security alarms.
Running footsteps.
Broken glass.
The front entrance was open.
But nobody was there.
Only one thing remained.
A small package sitting in the middle of the marble floor.
Adrien stopped.
Everyone stopped.
"No one touches it."
The guards surrounded the package.
Adrien slowly approached.
There was no name.
No address.
Only one word written on top.
CLARA.
My heart sank.
"How did they know I was here?"
Nobody answered.
Adrien carefully opened the package.
Inside was a phone.
The screen immediately turned on.
One video file.
No title.
No date.
Adrien looked at me.
"Are you sure you want to see this?"
I nodded.
He pressed play.
The screen showed a dark room.
Then a woman appeared.
My mother.
Older.
Tired.
Terrified.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Clara..."
I covered my mouth.
Her voice shook.
"If you are watching this, then Adrien failed to keep you hidden."
Adrien stepped back.
My mother continued.
"But there is something you need to know."
She looked away.
Like someone was standing near her.
Then she whispered:
"Adrien is not the person you should fear."
The video glitched.
The screen went black.
Then one final image appeared.
A man standing behind my mother.
A man whose face was finally visible.
Adrien looked at the screen.
And whispered:
"No..."
May you like
Because the man in the video...
was his own father.
