Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Walked Into The Lion’s Den

A young woman stood dripping wet inside a locked private room, whispering:
"I swear I was only trying to stop the water."
When mafia boss Adrien Moretti arrived, he found a broken silver key card belonging to the employee accused of causing the flood.
But three words were scratched into the back:
"Find The Truth."
Adrien suddenly realized this wasn't an accident.
My name is Clara Bennett, and before that night, I believed the worst thing that could happen at work was getting fired.
I was wrong.
Because getting fired was nothing compared to standing in front of eight armed men while water was still dripping from my hair and knowing the most dangerous man in Chicago was walking toward me.
The strange thing was that I never planned to meet Adrien Moretti.
I didn't even know who he was until everyone in that room stopped breathing when he stood up.
That morning had started like any other day.
I was working as a temporary assistant inside one of the most expensive homes in Chicago.
It wasn't my dream job.
It wasn't even close.
But after my mother’s medical bills became impossible to ignore, I learned quickly that pride did not pay hospital expenses.
So I accepted temporary work wherever I could find it.
Cleaning.
Organizing.
Helping wealthy families who barely remembered my name five minutes after meeting me.
That was how I ended up inside the Moretti mansion.
The job description was simple.
Help organize the upstairs guest rooms before an important private meeting.
Nobody explained who owned the mansion.
Nobody explained why every employee spoke quietly.
Nobody explained why every hallway had cameras.
I noticed everything.
But I told myself not to ask questions.
Rich people had strange habits.
That was what I believed.
Until the bathroom pipe exploded.
I was carrying towels down the second floor hallway when I heard the sound.
A sharp crack.
Then another.
Then the sound of rushing water.
At first, I thought someone had turned on a shower.
Then I saw water pouring underneath the bathroom door.
My stomach dropped.
"No, no, no..."
I rushed toward it.
The bathroom was already filling.
Water was spreading across the expensive marble floor.
And somehow, in less than a minute, my simple task became the biggest disaster anyone had seen inside that house.
I grabbed towels.
I tried shutting off the valve.
I called for help.
Nothing worked.
The water kept coming.
By the time someone finally arrived, I was completely soaked.
My white blouse stuck against my skin.
My hair was dripping.
My hands were shaking.
And the expression on the employee manager’s face told me one thing.
This was not a normal mistake.
"You don't understand what you've done," he said.
I looked at him.
"I was trying to stop it."
His face became pale.
"You flooded Adrien Moretti's private floor."
I froze.
"Who?"
The man looked at me like I had just admitted I didn't know what fire was.
"Adrien Moretti."
The way he said the name changed everything.
The other workers stopped moving.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody even looked at me.
"What happens now?" I asked.
Nobody answered.
That scared me more than anything.
Because people usually had something to say.
But fear made people silent.
Ten minutes later, I was told to enter the private meeting room.
I thought maybe I would explain.
Maybe apologize.
Maybe pay for the damage somehow.
I didn't know.
I only knew I couldn't lose this job.
I pushed open the large wooden doors.
And immediately understood why everyone was afraid.
The room was enormous.
Dark marble floors.
A long black table.
Expensive paintings.
Eight men stood around the room.
All wearing black suits.
All watching me.
Some had their hands near their jackets.
I didn't need anyone to explain what was hidden there.
Weapons.
My heart started beating faster.
Then I saw him.
Adrien Moretti.
He was sitting at the end of the table.
The kind of person who didn't need to raise his voice.
The entire room already listened.
He looked nothing like the criminals I imagined.
He looked calm.
Controlled.
Dangerous.
A man who had spent years making people afraid of disappointing him.
His eyes moved from my wet clothes to my face.
Nobody spoke.
Then one of the guards stepped forward.
"Boss, this is the woman responsible for the flooding."
I opened my mouth.
"I can explain."
Adrien didn't answer.
He just watched me.
The silence became heavier.
I expected anger.
A threat.
Something.
Instead, he slowly stood.
Every man in the room became alert.
And that was when I realized something.
They weren't afraid of me.
They were afraid of what Adrien Moretti would do.
He walked toward me.
Slowly.
Step by step.
My instincts told me to move back.
But I didn't.
Maybe because I was tired.
Maybe because I had spent years fighting problems alone.
Or maybe because I was too embarrassed to show fear.
When he stopped in front of me, he was close enough that I could see the small scar near his eyebrow.
"You know who I am?" he asked.
I swallowed.
"No."
The guards looked shocked.
Adrien tilted his head slightly.
"You walked into my private room, destroyed part of my house, and you don't even know whose house this is?"
I lowered my eyes.
"I didn't destroy it on purpose."
For the first time, something changed in his expression.
Not anger.
Interest.
One of the guards looked confused.
"Boss?"
Adrien ignored him.
"Your name?"
"Clara Bennett."
He repeated it quietly.
"Clara Bennett."
Something about the way he said my name made me uncomfortable.
Like he recognized it.
But that was impossible.
I had never met him before.
At least...
I thought I hadn't.
Adrien turned away from me.
"Bring me the security footage."
The room immediately changed.
The guards moved.
Fast.
I looked at him.
"Why do you need security footage?"
He looked back at me.
"Because I don't believe accidents happen in my house."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody answered.
Adrien walked back toward the table.
Then one of the guards placed a small object in front of him.
A broken silver key card.
My key card.
I recognized it immediately.
"I lost that upstairs," I said.
Adrien picked it up.
He turned it over.
Then his expression changed.
Because there was something written on the back.
Something I had never seen before.
Three scratched words.
FIND THE TRUTH.
The room became completely silent.
Adrien stared at the message.
Then he looked at me.
Not like I was an employee who made a mistake.
Not like I was someone who damaged his mansion.
Like I was a person connected to something much bigger.
"Clara," he said quietly.
"Where did you really get this key card?"
I felt my heartbeat stop.
Because before I could answer...
May you like
The lights in the room suddenly went out.
And in the darkness, someone whispered my name from somewhere inside the room.
