Chapter 8 - The Daughter He Never Protected

The first thing Emily Bennett noticed was that fear felt different now.

Before, fear had made her small.

It had made her apologize when she did nothing wrong.

It had made her lower her voice.

It had made her believe powerful people were always right and people like her were always the ones who had to beg.

But something had changed.

Fear was still there.

She could feel it.

Especially after learning that Thomas Vale knew about her.

Especially after realizing her father’s old enemies had not disappeared.

They had only been waiting.

But now fear no longer controlled her.

Because Emily finally understood something.

She was not the helpless girl standing outside the ballroom anymore.

She was someone who had survived every person who tried to make her feel invisible.

And she was done disappearing.

Three days after Gabriel warned her about Thomas Vale, Emily noticed the difference.

The hospital had more security.

Not obvious.

Not enough for ordinary people to notice.

But Emily noticed.

A man standing near the entrance.

A woman pretending to read a magazine in the waiting area.

A black vehicle parked across the street every morning.

She knew enough now to understand.

Gabriel was protecting her.

At first, she wanted to be angry.

She hated feeling watched.

She hated feeling like her life belonged to someone else’s decisions.

But then she remembered something.

Nobody had protected her before.

Not when her father left.

Not when her mother got sick.

Not when she had spent years carrying responsibilities that were never supposed to belong to her.

So instead of anger, she felt something more complicated.

Gratitude.

And fear of what that gratitude meant.

Because Gabriel Romano was becoming someone she trusted.

And trusting someone powerful had always been dangerous.

Emily sat beside her mother’s bed, watching her sleep.

Her mother looked peaceful.

Something Emily had not seen in years.

The hospital room door opened.

She expected a nurse.

Instead, Gabriel walked in.

No suit jacket.

No group of guards.

Just him.

For some reason, that made him seem more human.

“You’re early.”

Gabriel looked at the clock.

“I’m usually early.”

Emily smiled slightly.

“That sounds like something a person who controls everything would say.”

“I don’t control everything.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“You control a lot.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised her.

Most people with power denied it.

Gabriel accepted it.

That was one of the strange things about him.

He never pretended to be someone else.

“How is your mother?”

“Better.”

A small smile appeared on Emily’s face.

“The doctors think she can go home soon.”

“That’s good.”

Emily looked at him.

“You sound relieved.”

Gabriel was quiet for a moment.

“I am.”

The answer caught her off guard.

Because he said it like he meant it.

Not because it was polite.

Because he actually cared.

“You barely know us.”

“I know enough.”

“Do you?”

Gabriel looked at her.

Emily continued.

“You know the facts.”

She pointed toward the hospital room.

“My mother’s illness.”

She pointed toward herself.

“My father.”

She paused.

“But you don’t know us.”

A silence followed.

Then Gabriel walked closer.

“Tell me.”

Emily blinked.

“What?”

“Tell me.”

His voice softened.

“Who are you when nobody needs you to be strong?”

The question stayed with her.

Because nobody had ever asked.

Everyone asked what she could do.

How much she could handle.

How she could survive.

Nobody asked who she was underneath all of that.

Emily looked away.

“I don’t know.”

And that answer scared her.

Because it was true.

That evening, Richard Bennett arrived again.

This time, he didn’t come with excuses.

He came alone.

Emily met him outside the hospital.

The moment she saw him, she felt the old pain return.

But it was different now.

Less sharp.

More distant.

“What do you want?”

Richard looked tired.

“I need to talk to you.”

“About what?”

“About Vale.”

Emily’s expression changed.

“What about him?”

Richard looked around.

“He’s dangerous.”

Emily almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

“Then why did you leave me with no explanation?”

Richard looked down.

“Because I thought if you hated me, you would stay away from me.”

Emily froze.

“What?”

Richard’s voice became quieter.

“I thought if you believed I didn’t care, you would never look for me.”

The words hurt.

Because they revealed something painful.

His decision had been based on protecting her.

But protection that destroys someone is still destruction.

“You don’t get to call that protection.”

“I know.”

“You don’t get to disappear and decide that was love.”

Richard looked at her.

“I know.”

Emily stared.

Again, he wasn’t defending himself.

That made it harder.

“I was wrong.”

The simple admission surprised her.

Richard took a breath.

“I spent twelve years telling myself I made the right choice.”

A pause.

“But every year, I knew I was lying.”

Emily looked away.

“Why now?”

“Because I almost lost you.”

The answer was quiet.

“You were standing in that ballroom asking me for help, and I chose my image over my daughter.”

His voice broke slightly.

“I will regret that until I die.”

Emily felt something move inside her.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But something.

A crack in the wall she had built.

“I don’t know how to forgive you.”

Richard nodded.

“You shouldn’t have to.”

The response surprised her.

“I just wanted you to know…”

He looked at her.

“I never stopped being your father.”

Emily swallowed.

“Maybe.”

A pause.

“But you stopped acting like one.”

Richard accepted the truth.

And for the first time, Emily saw him not as the powerful businessman.

Not as the man who abandoned her.

Just as a person who had failed.

That night, Gabriel received information.

Thomas Vale had made his move.

Not directly.

Not yet.

But close enough.

“He contacted Richard,” Luca said.

Gabriel looked up.

“What did he say?”

“He wants Richard to suffer.”

Gabriel’s expression hardened.

“And Emily?”

Luca hesitated.

“He mentioned her.”

The room became colder.

Gabriel stood.

“What exactly?”

“He said Richard Bennett should lose the only thing he finally cares about.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Gabriel had dealt with threats before.

He had faced men who wanted his money.

His position.

His empire.

But this was different.

Because Vale wasn’t attacking an organization.

He was attacking a person.

Emily.

“Find him.”

Luca nodded.

“We will.”

Gabriel looked toward the window.

“Not just find him.”

Luca understood.

“Protect her.”

“Yes.”

The next morning, Emily received a message.

Unknown number.

She opened it.

A photo.

Her.

Outside the hospital.

Her heart stopped.

Then another message appeared.

You should ask your father what he cost me.

Emily stared at the screen.

Her hands began shaking.

Not because she was weak.

Because suddenly the danger was real.

She immediately called Gabriel.

He answered after one ring.

“Emily.”

She froze.

“How did you know it was me?”

“Because you never call unless something is wrong.”

That sentence should not have comforted her.

But it did.

She sent him the photo.

Several seconds passed.

Then his voice changed.

“Where are you?”

“At the hospital.”

“Stay inside.”

“Gabriel—”

“Emily.”

The way he said her name made her stop.

Not fear.

Concern.

“I’m coming.”

The call ended.

Emily looked at the phone.

And for the first time, she realized something.

The dangerous man everyone feared…

was the person she trusted most.

An hour later, Gabriel arrived.

This time, he was not calm.

Not completely.

The moment he entered the hospital, Emily saw it.

The controlled anger.

The man beneath the suit.

The person who had spent years mastering his emotions.

But not when it came to her.

“What happened?”

Emily showed him the message.

Gabriel read it.

His expression became unreadable.

“Did you tell anyone?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She looked at him.

“Are you angry?”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised her.

“At me?”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Never at you.”

The words were immediate.

Certain.

Emily felt something in her chest tighten.

Because she realized something.

Gabriel Romano had built an entire life around control.

But with her…

he was different.

“You’re scared.”

The observation surprised him.

“I’m not.”

“Yes, you are.”

Silence.

Emily stepped closer.

“You’re scared because you care.”

Gabriel looked away.

And that was the answer.

For the first time, the man everyone feared looked human.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Human.

“I made a promise,” he said.

Emily watched him.

“What promise?”

Gabriel looked directly at her.

“That nobody would take anything else from you.”

The words were quiet.

But they carried more weight than any threat.

Emily realized something.

The man behind the black suit was not protecting her because she was helpless.

He was protecting her because she mattered.

And maybe that was the most dangerous thing of all.

Because Gabriel Romano had spent his entire life believing attachment was a weakness.

May you like

Until Emily Bennett walked into his elevator.

And made him willing to risk everything.
