Chapter 6 - The Mafia Boss’s Impossible Promise

Emily Bennett had spent twelve years believing her father’s absence was the worst thing that could happen to her.

She was wrong.

The worst thing was discovering that the story she had survived on was incomplete.

Because when someone leaves, you can hate them.

You can accept that they were selfish.

You can tell yourself that they made a choice.

But when you discover there were secrets behind that choice…

When you realize your entire understanding of your own life was built on missing pieces…

The anger becomes something else.

Confusion.

And sometimes, fear.

Emily stood outside the hospital entrance, staring at Gabriel Romano through the open car door.

The city moved around them.

People walked past.

Cars passed.

The world continued as normal.

But for Emily, everything had stopped.

“What did you mean?” she asked.

Gabriel remained quiet.

He had expected questions.

He had expected anger.

But he had not expected the sadness in her eyes.

Because this was not the expression of someone discovering a secret.

This was the expression of someone realizing they had spent years without the truth.

“Get in,” Gabriel said.

Emily hesitated.

Every warning inside her told her to be careful.

This man was dangerous.

Everyone knew it.

His name carried weight.

His influence reached places ordinary people never saw.

But there was something else she knew now.

He had been honest with her when he had no reason to be.

He had helped her without asking for anything.

And he had looked at her pain without turning away.

Emily stepped into the car.

The vehicle moved through the city quietly.

Neither of them spoke for several minutes.

Emily looked out the window.

She watched buildings disappear behind them.

Different neighborhoods.

Different lives.

A city where some people fought over millions while others fought for one more day.

Finally, she turned.

“What did my father do?”

Gabriel looked ahead.

“Your father was not always the man you know.”

Emily almost smiled.

“That part I know.”

“No.”

Gabriel’s voice was calm.

“But you know the version that hurt you.”

He looked at her.

“I’m talking about the version that created the problem.”

Emily became still.

“What problem?”

Gabriel didn’t answer immediately.

That bothered her.

She had spent her entire life waiting for answers.

Now that they were finally coming, everyone seemed afraid to give them.

“Before Richard Bennett became one of the most respected businessmen in the city, he was struggling.”

Emily listened.

“Bennett Development was close to collapse.”

“I know.”

“My father invested.”

The words surprised her.

“Your father?”

Gabriel nodded.

“Years ago, Romano Holdings provided funding that saved Bennett Development.”

Emily stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because it was a business decision.”

She waited.

“But?”

Gabriel looked away.

“There was more to it.”

The silence grew heavier.

Emily folded her hands.

“What does this have to do with me?”

Gabriel studied her.

“Everything.”

That answer frightened her.

“Explain.”

“Your father’s agreement with my family came with conditions.”

“What kind of conditions?”

“Protection.”

Emily frowned.

“Protection from what?”

Gabriel looked at the passing city.

“From people who wanted his company destroyed.”

She shook her head.

“This doesn’t make sense.”

“It will.”

“Then tell me.”

Gabriel was silent.

Emily’s frustration grew.

“You brought me into this conversation.”

“Yes.”

“Then don’t give me pieces.”

Her voice became stronger.

“I spent twelve years thinking my father abandoned us because he didn’t care.”

A pause.

“Was that true?”

Gabriel looked at her.

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Emily froze.

“What?”

“He cared.”

A painful laugh escaped her.

“Then why did he leave?”

Gabriel did not answer.

And that silence hurt more than any explanation.

“Because he was afraid.”

Emily looked away.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

She wanted to reject it.

Because anger was easier.

Anger gave her control.

If Richard was afraid, then everything became complicated.

“I watched him choose another family.”

Gabriel’s expression softened slightly.

“I know.”

“He looked me in the eyes and said he didn’t know me.”

“I know.”

“Then don’t tell me he cared.”

The words came out broken.

For the first time, Gabriel saw the wound beneath her anger.

Not hatred.

Pain.

A daughter who had spent years waiting for a father who never came back.

“I’m not defending him.”

Emily looked at him.

“I’m telling you there was something else happening.”

That night, Gabriel brought Emily to a private office belonging to Romano Holdings.

She expected luxury.

She expected something cold.

Instead, she found something unexpected.

A room filled with old documents.

Photos.

Records.

History.

A place where the past had been preserved.

Gabriel placed a folder on the table.

“Your father’s original agreement.”

Emily looked at it.

“Why do you have this?”

“Because my family kept everything.”

She opened the folder.

The papers were old.

The signatures were faded.

But one name was clear.

Richard Bennett.

She read through the pages.

At first, it was just business language.

Numbers.

Contracts.

Legal terms.

Then she reached a section that made her stop.

Her eyes moved slowly.

“What is this?”

Gabriel watched her.

“Read it.”

Emily continued.

The agreement stated that Richard Bennett’s company would receive protection.

But in exchange, Richard had to provide information regarding certain financial activities connected to other investors.

Emily looked up.

“He was spying?”

“Not exactly.”

“Then what?”

“He was trapped.”

Emily frowned.

“How?”

Gabriel leaned against the desk.

“Your father discovered illegal activity involving people who controlled parts of the business world.”

“And he told your family?”

“Yes.”

“Then why does everyone act like he was the villain?”

“Because when powerful people are threatened, they change the story.”

Emily looked back at the document.

“So he left because of this?”

“Partly.”

“What does that mean?”

Gabriel hesitated.

And Emily noticed.

“There’s more.”

“Yes.”

Her stomach tightened.

“What?”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Your father believed leaving you and your mother was the only way to keep you safe.”

Emily stared.

“No.”

“He thought distance would protect you.”

“He was wrong.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised her.

Gabriel did not excuse him.

He did not pretend Richard made the right choice.

“He was wrong.”

Emily looked down.

For years, she imagined her father leaving because he didn’t care.

But now she had another possibility.

He cared.

And still hurt them.

Sometimes that was harder to forgive.

Later that night, Emily stood alone near the window of Gabriel’s office.

The city lights reflected in the glass.

“You helped my mother.”

Gabriel stood behind her.

“Yes.”

“You found these documents.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The question was quieter this time.

Not suspicious.

Just confused.

Gabriel looked at her reflection.

“Because someone should have told you the truth.”

Emily turned.

“And you decided that someone should be you?”

“No.”

The answer surprised her.

“Then who?”

Gabriel paused.

“You.”

The simplicity of the answer caught her off guard.

“You needed to find out.”

Emily looked away.

“I don’t know what to do with all of this.”

“I know.”

“My father hurt me.”

“Yes.”

“But maybe he was trying to protect me.”

“Yes.”

“That doesn’t make it okay.”

“No.”

Gabriel stepped closer.

“It doesn’t.”

For some reason, that mattered.

He wasn’t trying to convince her to forgive Richard.

He wasn’t trying to rewrite the past.

He was simply giving her the truth.

Something nobody else had done.

Emily looked at him.

“Why are you different?”

The question surprised both of them.

Gabriel was quiet.

“Different?”

“Everyone with power seems to use it to protect themselves.”

A pause.

“But you used yours to help me.”

His expression changed slightly.

Not much.

But enough.

“Maybe I know what it feels like when nobody helps.”

Emily studied him.

For the first time, she wondered about his story.

Not Gabriel Romano the businessman.

Not Gabriel Romano the feared man.

The person underneath.

“What happened to you?”

The question remained between them.

Gabriel looked away.

And Emily immediately knew.

She had touched something he never discussed.

“I’m sorry.”

“You don’t need to apologize.”

“I didn’t mean—”

“I know.”

A moment passed.

Then Gabriel said:

“Everyone thinks power protects you.”

Emily listened.

“It doesn’t.”

His voice became quieter.

“Sometimes it only makes people forget you’re human.”

Emily looked at him.

And suddenly, she understood something.

The world saw Gabriel Romano as someone untouchable.

But maybe he was someone who had been hurt too.

Someone who had simply learned how to hide it better.

The next morning, Emily returned to the hospital.

Her mother was sitting up.

Smiling.

“You look different.”

Emily laughed softly.

“Different?”

“Yes.”

Her mother studied her.

“Like you finally stopped carrying something heavy.”

Emily sat beside her.

“I found out things about Dad.”

Her mother became quiet.

“Good things?”

“Not exactly.”

“Bad things?”

“Not exactly.”

Her mother smiled sadly.

“That sounds like your father.”

Emily looked down.

For years, she wanted a simple answer.

A good person.

A bad person.

A right choice.

A wrong choice.

But life was never that simple.

People could love you and still hurt you.

They could protect you and still abandon you.

They could make mistakes that changed everything.

Her mother reached for her hand.

“What will you do now?”

Emily looked toward the window.

For the first time, she didn’t feel like she was running from the past.

She was facing it.

“I don’t know.”

A pause.

“But I want the truth.”

Across the city, Gabriel Romano received a message.

One sentence.

Richard Bennett knows Emily is connected to you.

Gabriel stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

He wants to meet.

For years, Gabriel had dealt with enemies.

Threats.

Betrayals.

Wars hidden behind business meetings.

But this felt different.

Because now, the person at the center of the conflict was Emily.

And that changed everything.

He looked toward the city.

Then quietly said:

“No one touches her.”

Luca stood nearby.

“Boss?”

Gabriel’s expression hardened.

“Not Richard Bennett.”

A pause.

“Not anyone.”

Because for the first time in many years…

Gabriel Romano was not protecting a business.

Not protecting his reputation.

Not protecting his empire.

May you like

He was protecting someone who had walked into his life carrying nothing but fear…

and somehow reminded him that he still had something worth saving.
