Chapter 15 - The Woman He Chose

The door opened.

Dominic didn't hesitate.

He moved through first.

I followed.

Leo was standing in the center of the room.

His hands were tied.

His uncle stood behind him with a gun.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Then Leo cried:

“Daddy!”

Dominic raised his weapon.

His uncle laughed.

“Drop it.”

Dominic lowered the gun.

I stared at him.

“Dominic…”

He looked at me.

Trust me.

That was all his eyes said.

He placed the weapon on the floor.

His uncle smiled.

“You finally learned.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“I'll give you what you want.”

“The trust?”

“Yes.”

“The money?”

“Yes.”

“The company?”

“Yes.”

His uncle looked suspicious.

“And Beatrice?”

Dominic's eyes hardened.

“No.”

His uncle lifted the gun.

Dominic continued.

“She isn't part of the bargain.”

His uncle laughed.

“You still don't understand. She is the bargain.”

I stepped forward.

“No.”

Dominic turned.

“Beatrice, stay back.”

I shook my head.

“I've spent my whole life hiding.”

His uncle looked at me.

“You should have kept doing it.”

I looked directly at him.

“No.”

His face changed.

“I know what you want.”

“The trust.”

“You want control.”

“Yes.”

“You think killing me gives you everything.”

He smiled.

“It does.”

I reached into my pocket.

My phone was recording.

“You're wrong.”

Dominic understood immediately.

He looked at the security camera above us.

His uncle followed his gaze.

Too late.

Every word had been transmitted to the police.

Sirens sounded outside.

His uncle turned.

Dominic moved.

He knocked the gun away.

The weapon slid across the floor.

His uncle attacked.

They fought.

I grabbed Leo and pulled him behind the wall.

A gunshot echoed.

Dominic fell.

“Dominic!”

He looked up.

“I'm okay.”

His uncle tried to reach the gun.

I kicked it away.

Police stormed into the room.

The fight ended.

His uncle was arrested.

And for the first time in years, the Russo estate became quiet.

Not the frightening kind of quiet.

A peaceful one.

Three months later, the trust was transferred.

I refused to take control of the criminal businesses.

Instead, I used the legal assets to create a foundation in my mother's name.

Evelyn became part of our lives.

Leo adored her.

He called her Aunt Evelyn.

Clara testified against Dominic's uncle.

Calvin's daughter was reunited with him.

The old security system was destroyed.

Every secret passage was sealed.

And the mansion changed.

Not because the walls were different.

Because we were.

I no longer wore clothes designed to make me disappear.

I stopped apologizing for taking up space.

I danced whenever I wanted.

Sometimes in the kitchen.

Sometimes in the garden.

Sometimes with Leo laughing beside me.

One evening, almost a year after that first midnight dance, music played softly through the kitchen.

I was barefoot again.

Dominic stood in the doorway.

I noticed him immediately.

“You're watching me again.”

He smiled.

“I am.”

I laughed.

“You know, the first time you saw me dancing, you scared me half to death.”

“I remember.”

“You thought I was beautiful.”

“I knew you were.”

I rolled my eyes.

“You didn't say that.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“Of how much I wanted to say.”

He crossed the room.

Then he held out his hand.

“Dance with me.”

I stared at him.

“The feared mafia boss wants to dance?”

“The man who loves you does.”

I took his hand.

He pulled me gently closer.

Leo appeared at the doorway.

“Can I dance too?”

Dominic laughed.

“Of course.”

Within seconds, the three of us were moving around the kitchen.

Evelyn entered carrying dessert.

She stopped.

Then smiled.

For years, I had believed happiness was something other people received.

Thin women.

Beautiful women.

Women who didn't have scars.

Women who didn't come from complicated families.

Women who didn't have secrets.

I had believed love was something I would have to earn by becoming smaller.

Quieter.

Easier.

But Dominic never asked me to become smaller.

He asked me to become fearless.

He saw the woman dancing alone at midnight.

Not the body everyone else had judged.

Not the nanny.

Not the daughter of a dangerous man.

Not the heir to a fortune.

Me.

Just me.

And when the world tried to turn me into something it could control, he gave me the one thing nobody had ever given me before.

A choice.

I chose him.

Not because he was powerful.

Not because he could protect me.

Not because he was feared.

I chose him because, when he finally had everything he thought he wanted, he was willing to give it all away if it meant I could remain free.

A year later, Dominic proposed in the same kitchen.

No reporters.

No guards.

No grand ceremony.

Just us.

He got down on one knee while Leo held the ring box.

Leo whispered loudly:

“Bea, say yes.”

I laughed through my tears.

“I was going to.”

Dominic looked up at me.

“Are you sure?”

I touched his face.

“For the first time in my life, I am.”

He slipped the ring onto my finger.

Then he stood and kissed my forehead.

The music started again.

I pulled him into a slow dance.

Leo groaned.

“That's boring.”

Dominic laughed.

I laughed.

And for once, nobody was watching us from the shadows.

Nobody was waiting behind a locked door.

Nobody was hiding a weapon.

Nobody was asking us to run.

The woman who once danced alone because she thought nobody would ever choose her was no longer alone.

She had a family.

A sister.

A son who wasn't hers by blood but had chosen her anyway.

And a man who had once been feared by everyone in the city, yet had looked at her dancing in a kitchen and seen exactly what she had spent her whole life trying to believe.

That she was enough.

That she was beautiful.

May you like

That she deserved to take up space.

And that she never needed to hide again.
