Chapter 7 - The Truth We Finally Deserved

The Ashford family estate looked exactly the same.

That was the first thing I noticed when Brett’s car stopped outside the gates.

The same stone walls.

The same long driveway.

The same house that had appeared in every photograph of Brett’s childhood.

But now I knew something I didn’t know before.

Beautiful places could hide terrible things.

Brett sat beside me in silence.

For the first time since I met him, he looked uncertain.

Not weak.

Never weak.

But human.

The letter from my father was still inside my bag.

Untouched.

Waiting.

Elena sat in the back seat, staring at the house where she had lost ten years of her life.

Nobody spoke as the gates opened.

Because we all knew.

Whatever waited inside would change everything.

Brett stepped out first.

His security team surrounded the property, but he ordered them to stay outside.

"This is something I need to face myself."

I looked at him.

"You don't have to do this alone."

His eyes met mine.

A small expression crossed his face.

Gratitude.

The kind Brett rarely showed.

"You were never supposed to be part of this."

I shook my head.

"Maybe not."

I held his gaze.

"But I am."

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he nodded.

And together, we walked into the house.

The place was quiet.

Too quiet.

Victor wanted us there.

He wanted us to know.

The question was why.

We reached the main hall.

The same place where Brett had last seen Elena ten years ago.

The same place where everything had fallen apart.

Then we heard footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone appeared at the top of the staircase.

Victor Hale.

He looked exactly the same as he always had.

The same gray suit.

The same calm expression.

The same man who had stood beside Brett for years.

But now I saw him differently.

Because sometimes the most dangerous people weren't the ones who looked threatening.

They were the ones who made you feel safe.

Brett stared at him.

"Why?"

Victor looked down.

No fear.

No surprise.

Almost sadness.

"I knew you would come."

Brett walked forward.

"You betrayed my family."

Victor looked at Elena.

Then at me.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"I saved yours."

The words made everyone stop.

Brett's expression hardened.

"Don't lie to me."

"I'm not."

Victor walked down the stairs slowly.

"Ten years ago, Marcus Vale was planning to destroy both families."

He looked at me.

"Your father discovered it."

My heart tightened.

"What did he discover?"

Victor stopped.

"Marcus wasn't stealing money."

"Then what?"

"He was building a network."

A pause.

"Political influence. Illegal contracts. Blackmail. He was collecting secrets on everyone powerful enough to stop him."

Brett listened carefully.

"And my father?"

Victor looked at him.

"Your father wanted to expose him."

The silence was heavy.

"My father knew?"

Victor nodded.

"So did Gianna's father."

Everything finally started connecting.

The missing documents.

The fake accounts.

The lies.

The disappearances.

"They worked together," Victor continued.

"They planned to bring Marcus down."

I looked at him.

"Then why did they die?"

Victor's expression changed.

Because that was the question he had been waiting for.

"Because someone betrayed them."

Brett stepped closer.

"Who?"

Victor looked directly at him.

"Your mother."

The words hit harder than anything before.

Brett froze.

Even Elena looked shocked.

"My mother?"

Victor nodded.

"She wasn't the mastermind."

He took a breath.

"But she was involved."

I felt my chest tighten.

"Why?"

Victor looked at me.

"Because Marcus threatened her."

The room went silent.

"She had information. She tried to protect her family the only way she knew how."

Brett shook his head.

"No."

Victor continued.

"She gave Marcus access to documents."

Brett's face changed.

"But she didn't know he would kill them."

Elena whispered.

"She tried to fix it."

Victor nodded.

"After realizing what Marcus had done, she turned against him."

My mind raced.

"So my mother wasn't gone because she abandoned me?"

Victor looked at me.

"No."

His voice softened.

"She disappeared because Marcus was hunting everyone connected to the truth."

I felt tears forming.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years believing someone I loved had left me.

But she hadn't.

She had been trying to survive.

Victor reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

"This is why I brought you here."

Brett looked at it.

"What's that?"

"The final evidence."

Victor handed it to Brett.

Inside were documents.

Recordings.

Proof.

Everything Marcus had hidden.

Everything that could destroy the empire he built.

Brett looked through the files.

Then he looked at Victor.

"Why keep this for so long?"

Victor lowered his eyes.

"Because I was afraid."

That answer surprised me.

"I spent ten years trying to protect Elena. Trying to gather enough proof. Trying to find a way to bring Marcus down without getting everyone killed."

Elena stepped forward.

"Then why didn't you tell Brett?"

Victor looked at her.

"Because Brett would have gone after him immediately."

A painful truth.

Everyone knew it.

Brett was a man who fought.

Even when fighting cost him everything.

"And I couldn't lose another Ashford."

For the first time, Brett's expression softened.

The anger faded.

Only exhaustion remained.

"All these years..."

Victor nodded.

"I know."

Brett looked away.

The betrayal still hurt.

Even with the explanation.

Because knowing why someone hurt you didn't erase the pain.

But it helped you understand it.

A week later, Marcus Vale’s empire collapsed.

The evidence Victor collected exposed everything.

The investigations moved quickly.

The world finally saw what had been hidden for years.

Marcus lost everything.

His companies.

His influence.

His power.

But the greatest victory wasn't watching him fall.

It was watching the truth return.

My mother was found living under a different name in another country.

When I saw her again, I couldn't move.

Neither could she.

We just stood there.

Two people who had spent years believing they had lost each other.

Then she hugged me.

And I finally understood.

Some broken things didn't return to how they were.

They became something new.

Something stronger.

Brett and Elena also had their own healing to do.

Ten years of pain didn't disappear overnight.

But slowly, they became siblings again.

Not the perfect family everyone imagined.

A real family.

One that had survived.

Months later, I stood in the same ballroom where everything began.

The same marble floor.

The same golden lights.

But this time, I wasn't standing there afraid.

I wasn't hiding.

I wasn't someone caught between powerful people.

I was Gianna Costa.

A woman who knew her own strength.

Brett approached me.

No guards.

No business calls.

No walls.

Just Brett.

"You look different."

I smiled.

"So do you."

He smiled slightly.

A rare sight.

"I spent my whole life protecting everyone else."

"And now?"

He looked at me.

"Now I'm learning how to let someone stand beside me."

The honesty in his voice meant more than any promise.

I looked around the ballroom.

The place where a stranger had hurt me.

The place where Brett had protected me.

The place where secrets had begun.

And where everything had finally changed.

"Do you regret saving me that night?"

Brett shook his head.

"No."

He took my hand.

"That was the first honest thing I did in years."

I smiled.

"And what was the second?"

He looked at me.

"Falling in love with you."

For once, Brett Ashford wasn't hiding.

No secrets.

No fear.

No pretending.

Just two people who had survived the truth.

A year later, we stood together in front of the people who mattered most.

Elena was there.

Victor was there.

The people who remained.

The people who chose honesty over fear.

And when Brett held my hand, I realized something.

The night everything fell apart had also been the night everything began.

Because sometimes the person who walks into your life during your darkest moment isn't there to save you.

They're there to remind you that you were strong enough to survive all along.

Brett Ashford had once been a man surrounded by secrets.

But now he had something more valuable.

A future.

And I had something I thought I lost forever.

A family.

A love.

May you like

A life that finally belonged to me.
