Chapter 2 - The Woman Behind the Name

The photograph remained on the giant screen.
Brett Ashford stood frozen beside me.
The entire ballroom had gone silent.
Nobody whispered.
Nobody moved.
Because everyone in that room understood one thing.
Something impossible had just appeared.
The woman in the photograph looked nothing like a random stranger.
She was standing beside Brett.
Close enough to look familiar.
Close enough to make people wonder.
Her dark hair fell over her shoulders, her expression was soft, and one hand rested against Brett’s arm.
The picture looked old.
Personal.
Private.
And beneath it, the name burned across the screen.
ELENA ASHFORD.
I stared at it.
Then I looked at Brett.
For two years, I had worked beside him.
I knew his schedule.
I knew his business partners.
I knew his habits.
I knew the names of every person allowed near him.
But I had never heard that name.
Not once.
Brett’s face had changed.
The cold mask he wore in public was gone.
For a brief moment, he looked like a man who had just seen a ghost.
"Turn it off."
His voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
A man standing near the control panel immediately rushed toward the equipment.
The screen went black.
The damage was already done.
Everyone had seen it.
Everyone had questions.
And everyone knew Brett Ashford had a secret.
Alexander Vale stepped backward with a satisfied smile.
That was when I understood.
He wasn't surprised.
He was enjoying this.
Brett noticed too.
His eyes moved toward Alexander.
"Did you know about this?"
Alexander adjusted his jacket.
"I think the better question is why you never told your assistant."
My stomach tightened.
Assistant.
That word suddenly sounded like an insult.
Because Brett had always treated me differently.
He trusted me with information nobody else had.
He asked for my opinion.
He remembered small details about my life.
But there was one thing he had never given me.
The truth.
Brett stepped closer to Alexander.
"You have five seconds to leave."
The room became tense.
Alexander smiled.
"Still protecting your secrets, Brett?"
Brett didn't answer.
"Four."
Alexander looked at me.
A strange expression crossed his face.
Almost sympathy.
Almost pity.
"Ask him what happened ten years ago."
My breath caught.
Brett's eyes turned sharp.
"Three."
Alexander laughed quietly.
"You really never told her?"
"Two."
"Interesting."
"One."
Security appeared before Brett finished the countdown.
They escorted Alexander away.
But the damage remained.
Because now I had questions.
And Brett knew it.
The moment the crowd began moving again, he grabbed my hand.
Not harshly.
Not like someone claiming ownership.
Like someone afraid I would disappear.
"Come with me."
I followed him through a private hallway behind the ballroom.
The noise faded.
The expensive smiles disappeared.
The fake world of the gala stayed behind us.
Only Brett and I remained.
He stopped in his private office.
A place I had entered hundreds of times.
But never like this.
Never with secrets waiting inside.
He closed the door.
Then locked it.
My heart started beating faster.
"Brett."
He looked at me.
"I need you to listen before you decide what you think."
That sentence alone told me everything.
Whatever came next was going to hurt.
"Who is Elena?"
For several seconds, he said nothing.
The silence answered before he did.
"She was my sister."
I blinked.
"Your sister?"
He nodded slowly.
"My younger sister."
The words felt impossible.
Because Brett Ashford had always been described as an only child.
At least, that was what every public record said.
"I checked your family records when I started working for you," I admitted.
His expression changed slightly.
"I know."
"You know?"
"I know everything about the people who work closest to me."
That should have scared me.
Instead, it made me sad.
Because I realized something.
Brett trusted everyone with information about himself.
Except himself.
"What happened to her?"
He walked toward the window.
The city lights reflected against the glass.
"Elena disappeared."
"When?"
"Ten years ago."
I waited.
He didn't continue.
"That's it?"
"No."
His voice became quieter.
"That's the official story."
I felt a chill.
"What does that mean?"
Brett looked back at me.
"It means someone wanted everyone to believe she was gone."
My fingers tightened around my phone.
The message.
The bracelet.
The photograph.
Everything connected.
"Someone sent that picture tonight."
"I know."
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
The answer shocked me.
"You suspected?"
Brett walked back toward the desk.
He opened a drawer.
Inside was a folder.
Old.
Worn.
The kind of thing that had been opened many times.
He placed it in front of me.
On the cover was one name.
ELENA ASHFORD.
"I never wanted you involved."
I looked at him.
"But I already am."
He didn't argue.
That scared me.
I opened the folder.
The first page was a newspaper article.
A missing person report.
The photograph was the same woman from the screen.
The article said Elena Ashford disappeared after leaving a private event.
No witnesses.
No evidence.
No explanation.
But there was something written in the corner.
A handwritten note.
My eyes narrowed.
"What is this?"
Brett looked down.
"I wrote that."
The note contained a date.
The same date as Elena's disappearance.
And four words.
She trusted the wrong person.
I looked at him.
"Who?"
Brett's jaw tightened.
"I don't know."
For the first time, I believed him.
Because Brett Ashford always had answers.
But this?
This was the one thing he couldn't control.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
He looked away.
"Because the person responsible wanted me to react."
I frowned.
"What?"
"If I moved too quickly, Elena would disappear forever."
The room went silent.
"Wait."
I stared at him.
"You think she's alive?"
Brett didn't answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
A thousand thoughts crossed my mind.
The photograph.
The message.
The warning.
The bracelet.
Someone wanted me to discover this.
Someone wanted Brett to lose control.
And they had chosen me to do it.
"Why me?"
Brett looked at me.
"What?"
"Why did they send everything to me?"
He didn't respond.
Because he already knew.
That was the part he didn't want to say.
"Gianna."
His voice was different.
Careful.
"Someone is trying to use you to get to me."
I forced myself to stay calm.
"Who?"
Brett looked at the folder.
Then at the locked office door.
"I don't know yet."
A knock interrupted us.
Three slow knocks.
Brett immediately reached for the drawer.
Not the folder.
Something else.
A weapon.
My eyes widened.
"Are we in danger?"
He didn't answer.
The lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then my phone vibrated.
A new message.
Unknown number.
I looked down.
This time there was a picture attached.
My blood ran cold.
It was a photo of me.
Taken minutes earlier.
Inside Brett's office.
Someone had been watching us.
The message underneath was only one sentence.
"She was never your secret to protect."
Brett read it over my shoulder.
And his expression changed.
Because he recognized the number.
"Who is it?"
His hand tightened around the phone.
Then someone knocked again.
This time harder.
Brett moved toward the door.
He reached for the handle.
May you like
The lock clicked open from the outside.
And a woman's voice whispered his name.
