Chapter 5 - The Woman Behind The Betrayal

The message stayed on Roman's phone screen.

"She is standing behind Nora."

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I slowly turned around.

My heart was beating so loudly that I could barely hear anything else.

Behind me was the office door.

Empty.

The hallway outside.

Empty.

The people inside the room.

Everyone was staring at me.

Waiting.

I looked back at Roman.

"Someone is playing with us."

My voice sounded calmer than I felt.

Roman didn't answer.

Because he knew something I didn't.

The person who sent that message wanted fear.

They wanted confusion.

They wanted everyone to turn against each other.

And somehow...

it was working.

Roman took the phone from his hand and studied the message again.

"Trace the number."

One of his men immediately began working.

Rebecca looked at me.

"Nora, don't move."

I almost smiled.

"Everyone keeps telling me that."

I looked at the people around me.

"Don't move. Don't ask questions. Don't look too closely."

My voice cracked slightly.

"But nobody tells me why."

Roman looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something in his expression that wasn't power.

It was guilt.

"You deserve the truth."

I stared at him.

"Then tell me."

The room became silent.

Roman lowered the phone.

"Your mother was investigating something before she died."

I waited.

"Something involving Julian."

My stomach tightened.

"Why?"

Roman walked toward the desk.

He picked up the old photograph of my mother.

"Because Julian wasn't the man you thought he was."

The words hurt.

Not because I loved Julian anymore.

That part of me had died a long time ago.

It hurt because I had spent years questioning myself.

Wondering why I wasn't enough.

Why he left so easily.

Why he looked at me like I was a mistake.

And now I was finding out...

Maybe the entire relationship had been built on a lie.

Rebecca opened another file.

Inside were pages of notes written by my mother.

Her handwriting.

Her thoughts.

Her fears.

I touched the paper carefully.

Like touching a piece of her that still existed.

The first page had one sentence.

"Julian is not the enemy. He is the doorway."

I looked up.

"What does that mean?"

Roman read the page.

His jaw tightened.

"He was close to the people who were watching your mother."

"But he married me."

Rebecca nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Nobody answered.

Again.

That silence.

That unbearable silence.

I pushed the papers away.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

"I am done being the last person to know what is happening."

My voice became stronger.

"My mother died. My marriage collapsed. Someone attacked me today because of a necklace I didn't even know was important."

I looked directly at Roman.

"And now I'm being told my entire life was part of some secret plan."

I stepped closer.

"So tell me everything."

Roman looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

"Twenty-two years ago, your mother discovered something."

He paused.

"Something that could destroy powerful people."

"What?"

"A financial network."

I frowned.

"Money?"

"Not just money."

Roman looked at Rebecca.

"People."

The word felt heavier.

"Your mother discovered that several wealthy families were using illegal businesses to control companies, politicians, and organizations."

I stared at him.

"And Julian?"

"His family was connected."

The room became colder.

"Julian knew?"

Roman shook his head.

"At first, no."

Rebecca interrupted.

"Your mother believed Julian was being used too."

I looked at the files.

"So why did she let me marry him?"

Rebecca looked sad.

"Because she thought keeping you close to him was safer than letting you disappear."

I felt sick.

My own mother had known.

She had watched me fall in love with a man who wasn't telling me the truth.

But then I remembered her face in the video.

Her voice.

The fear.

She wasn't trying to hurt me.

She was trying to protect me.

A sound came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

A guard entered.

"Boss."

Roman looked up.

"We found Julian."

My heart jumped.

"Where?"

The guard hesitated.

"He is in the basement."

Nobody spoke.

"The basement?"

Roman's face changed.

"Which basement?"

The guard looked uncomfortable.

"The old hotel storage level."

Rebecca suddenly stood.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

Her face had lost all color.

"What?"

She looked at Roman.

"Celeste hid something there."

Roman's eyes narrowed.

"How do you know?"

Rebecca swallowed.

"Because I helped her."

A heavy silence filled the room.

I looked at Rebecca.

"You knew?"

She closed her eyes.

"I knew she was planning something."

"Something that involved me?"

Rebecca didn't answer.

That was enough.

Roman grabbed his coat.

"We go now."

I followed immediately.

Roman stopped.

"Nora."

I looked at him.

"You should stay here."

I stared at him.

"No."

"This could be dangerous."

"My whole life has been dangerous and nobody told me."

He looked at me.

I didn't move.

Finally, he nodded.

"Stay close."

We walked through the private elevator.

The ride down felt endless.

Nobody spoke.

The deeper we went, the colder it became.

When the doors opened, I saw an old storage area beneath the hotel.

Dust.

Old furniture.

Unused equipment.

But something else caught my attention.

A wall.

Covered with photographs.

My photographs.

My mother's photographs.

My childhood.

My school.

My first job.

My wedding.

My entire life.

My breathing stopped.

Someone had been watching me.

For years.

Roman saw it too.

His expression became terrifying.

"This wasn't Julian."

I turned.

"What?"

Roman walked closer to the wall.

"He didn't have access to this information."

Rebecca whispered:

"Then who did?"

Nobody answered.

Because at that moment...

we heard a noise.

A door closing somewhere deeper inside the basement.

Roman immediately raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

A small light moved in the darkness.

Someone was there.

Roman walked forward.

I followed behind him.

The light revealed a figure standing beside an old wooden table.

A man.

His back facing us.

Roman's voice became cold.

"Julian."

The man slowly turned around.

But it wasn't Julian.

My entire body froze.

Because the person standing there was someone I recognized.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had held my hand when my mother died.

Someone who had cried beside me at her funeral.

Rebecca whispered his name.

"David..."

The man looked at me.

Then he smiled sadly.

"Nora."

My blood went cold.

Because he was holding something in his hand.

Something that belonged to my mother.

The hidden memory chip.

And behind him was another door.

May you like

A door with a lock.

A door that had my name written across it.
