Chapter 7 - The Daughter He Never Knew He Had

"She is your..."

Damian couldn't finish the sentence.

The words on the back of the photograph felt heavier than anything he had ever carried.

His fingers tightened around the old picture.

Hazel watched him.

She had never seen Damian Romano like this.

Not angry.

Not controlled.

Not powerful.

Just broken.

"What does it say?"

Damian didn't answer.

Hazel stepped closer.

"Damian."

He looked at her.

For a moment, she saw the same confusion she felt.

Two people who had spent their entire lives believing they understood their own stories.

And suddenly realizing they didn't.

Victor stood quietly.

Almost patiently.

Like he had been waiting years for this moment.

Damian turned the photograph around.

The writing on the back was clear.

SHE IS YOUR SISTER.

The room became silent.

Hazel stared.

Then she laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

"No."

Her voice shook.

"No, that's not true."

Nobody responded.

Because everyone knew there was only one way to prove it.

A truth test.

A blood test.

Something real.

Not another document.

Not another secret.

Not another person deciding her life for her.

Hazel looked at Damian.

"Say something."

Damian opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That hurt more than any answer.

Because Damian Romano always had words.

Always.

But now he was speechless.

Hazel stepped back.

"So all this time..."

Her voice became quieter.

"You weren't protecting me because you felt sorry for me."

Damian looked at her.

"No."

"Then why?"

He looked at the photograph.

"Because I didn't know."

Hazel stared.

"What?"

"I didn't know you existed."

The honesty in his voice made her pause.

Because for the first time, Damian wasn't hiding behind control.

He was just telling the truth.

His truth.

"My father never told me."

Victor walked toward them.

"Because your father knew what would happen if you found out."

Damian looked at him.

"What?"

Victor's expression hardened.

"He knew you would protect her."

A pause.

"And he knew protecting her would make you his enemy."

Hazel looked between them.

"What does that mean?"

Victor looked at Damian.

"Your father built everything around power."

"He manipulated people."

"He controlled information."

"But there was one thing he could never control."

Damian waited.

"His own son."

The words hit.

Because Damian understood.

His father hadn't hidden Hazel because she was dangerous.

He hid her because Damian would choose her.

Even without knowing she was family.

Hazel sat down.

Everything felt unreal.

Her mother.

Her brother.

Her father's identity.

Every piece of her life had changed overnight.

Her mother moved closer.

"Hazel."

She looked up.

"I am sorry."

Hazel looked at her.

"You keep saying that."

Her mother's eyes filled.

"Because it's the only thing I have left."

"No."

Hazel shook her head.

"You have the truth."

The woman looked away.

"Sometimes the truth destroys more than lies."

Hazel looked at Damian.

She hated that she understood.

Because Damian had spent his entire life surrounded by secrets too.

Maybe that was why he recognized her fear.

Maybe that was why he protected her.

Because he knew what it felt like to discover your own life wasn't yours.

Suddenly, Adrian's voice came through the communication device.

"Damian."

Everyone turned.

"What happened?"

"We have a problem."

"What kind?"

A pause.

"The intruders aren't trying to escape."

Damian frowned.

"Then what are they doing?"

Adrian's voice became quieter.

"They're opening the vault."

Damian's expression changed.

"The vault is impossible to access."

"Not anymore."

A chill moved through the room.

Victor looked away.

Damian noticed.

"You know something."

Victor didn't answer.

"Victor."

Finally, Victor spoke.

"Your father created the vault for one reason."

"To hide things."

"No."

Victor looked at him.

"To destroy things."

Hazel felt cold.

"What things?"

Victor looked at her.

"Evidence."

"Against who?"

His eyes moved toward Damian.

"Everyone."

The security screens suddenly changed.

Every camera feed disappeared.

One by one.

The estate went blind.

Adrian's voice became urgent.

"Damian, we lost all internal surveillance."

Damian grabbed the communication device.

"Find another route."

"We're trying."

A second later, the main screen turned back on.

But it wasn't a camera feed.

It was a video.

A recording.

An old recording.

A man appeared on the screen.

Damian froze.

Because he knew him.

His father.

The room became silent.

The older man looked directly into the camera.

"If you are watching this, then my secrets have finally been discovered."

Hazel stared.

The recording continued.

"I know my son will hate me."

Damian didn't move.

"But hatred is better than death."

Victor looked uncomfortable.

The man continued.

"There is something you need to know about Hazel Brooks."

Hazel stopped breathing.

The recording paused.

Then continued.

"She was never a mistake."

Damian's eyes moved toward Hazel.

The older man's voice continued.

"She was the only person I ever tried to protect."

Everyone listened.

Even Victor.

"Because she carried something that could destroy everything I built."

Hazel looked confused.

"What?"

The recording stopped.

A new message appeared.

FILE CORRUPTED.

Damian stared at the screen.

"No."

He hit the controls.

Nothing.

Victor walked closer.

"Your father planned for this."

Damian looked at him.

"How?"

"Because he knew someone would try to erase the truth."

Hazel looked at Victor.

"Then where is the rest?"

Victor didn't answer.

Damian turned.

"Where is it?"

Victor stayed silent.

Damian stepped closer.

"Where is the rest of the recording?"

Finally, Victor said:

"The second part was never kept in the vault."

"Where?"

Victor looked toward Hazel.

Hazel felt her stomach drop.

"Why are you looking at me?"

Victor reached into his pocket.

He removed a small key.

Old.

Rusty.

But familiar.

Hazel recognized it.

Because she had seen it before.

On a necklace her mother kept hidden.

"My mother had that."

Victor nodded.

"Because she was the only person your father trusted."

Hazel took the key.

Her hands shook.

"What does it open?"

Victor looked at Damian.

Then at Hazel.

"Something your father left for both of you."

Damian stepped forward.

"Where?"

Victor answered quietly.

"The house where Hazel grew up."

Hazel froze.

"My childhood home?"

"Yes."

"But that house was sold years ago."

Victor shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"It was never sold."

Hazel looked confused.

"What?"

Victor lowered his voice.

"It was hidden."

The security alarm suddenly screamed.

Adrian's voice came through.

"Damian!"

"What?"

"We found the person who opened the vault."

Everyone waited.

"Who?"

A long pause.

Then Adrian answered.

"The person is inside the estate."

Damian looked around.

"Where?"

May you like

Adrian's voice became almost a whisper.

"Standing behind you."
