Chapter 2 - The Locked Room And The Hidden Debt

The red security lights continued flashing.

UNKNOWN PERSON INSIDE THE ESTATE.

Hazel stared at the screen.

For a few seconds, she forgot how to breathe.

Someone had entered the Romano estate.

Someone who was not supposed to be there.

Damian stood completely still.

The pain from his injury seemed irrelevant now.

His entire focus had shifted.

The man who had appeared almost emotionless moments ago suddenly looked like someone who had spent years preparing for exactly this kind of moment.

Danger.

Betrayal.

A threat hidden inside his own walls.

Hazel watched him closely.

She had expected fear.

Instead, she saw calculation.

Damian pressed a button on the security panel.

"Show me the location."

The screen changed.

A digital map of the estate appeared.

A small red dot moved slowly across the third floor.

Toward them.

Hazel's stomach tightened.

"They're coming here?"

Damian didn't answer.

That was enough of an answer.

She stepped away from the door.

"Shouldn't we call the police?"

Damian looked at her.

"No."

The response came too quickly.

"Why?"

"Because whoever is inside already knows how this house works."

Hazel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Damian walked toward the desk and opened another drawer.

Inside was not paperwork.

It was a hidden compartment.

He removed a small communication device.

"Nobody gets inside this estate without help."

Hazel looked at him.

"You think someone inside helped them?"

"I know someone did."

The certainty in his voice made her uncomfortable.

Damian pressed the device.

"Adrian."

A man's voice answered immediately.

"Yes, boss."

"How many people?"

"One confirmed entry. We lost camera access on the west hallway."

Damian's expression darkened.

"Lost access?"

"Someone disabled it manually."

A pause.

Then Adrian spoke again.

"There's something else."

Damian waited.

"The person who entered knew exactly where to go."

Hazel felt cold.

"Where?"

Silence.

Then Adrian answered.

"The third floor."

Damian looked toward the locked door.

Toward Hazel.

The timing was too perfect.

Hazel noticed.

"You think they're here because of me."

Damian didn't respond.

That hurt more than if he had accused her.

Because silence meant he was considering it.

Hazel crossed her arms.

"I don't know who you think I am, but I didn't invite anyone into this house."

Damian looked at her.

"You had a hidden envelope with your name on it."

"That doesn't mean I know anything."

"Then explain Frankie Sullivan."

Hazel looked away.

She hated that name.

She hated how easily it followed her.

"I can't."

Damian's eyes narrowed.

"Can't?"

"Not because I don't want to."

Her voice became quieter.

"Because I don't know where to start."

For the first time, Damian saw something different in her expression.

Not guilt.

Not manipulation.

Fear.

Real fear.

He had spent years reading people.

Everyone wanted something from him.

Money.

Power.

Protection.

Status.

But Hazel looked like someone who had been running from something she never understood.

Before he could say anything, a loud sound echoed from outside.

A door opening.

Hazel froze.

Damian immediately moved.

He grabbed her arm.

Then stopped.

The moment his hand touched her skin, both of them noticed.

The room went silent.

Because everyone knew the rule.

Nobody touched Damian Romano.

But he had just broken it.

Damian released her slowly.

His expression changed.

Almost like he was surprised by his own action.

Hazel looked at him.

"I'm sorry."

She didn't know why she apologized.

Maybe because she thought she had caused the reaction.

Damian shook his head.

"No."

One word.

Quiet.

Unexpected.

"No?"

His eyes stayed on her.

"You didn't do anything."

Another sound came from the hallway.

Closer.

Damian moved in front of her.

Protecting her.

Hazel noticed.

And that confused her more than anything else.

A man like Damian Romano was supposed to protect himself first.

Not a maid.

Not someone he barely knew.

Not someone who had accidentally broken every rule around him in less than an hour.

The footsteps stopped outside.

Hazel held her breath.

The door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

But the lock held.

Damian reached beneath his desk and removed a small weapon.

Not pointing it at her.

Never at her.

But ready.

Hazel stared.

"You really thought someone would come here tonight?"

Damian kept his eyes on the door.

"I knew someone would."

"Then why were you here?"

A pause.

Then:

"Because this was the only place they couldn't control."

Hazel didn't understand.

But she knew one thing.

Damian Romano was not just hiding from enemies.

He was hiding from a past.

The footsteps moved away.

Silence returned.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Damian looked at the first-aid kit.

"Sit."

Hazel blinked.

"What?"

"Your hand."

She looked down.

Only then did she notice the small cut on her finger from the envelope.

"It's nothing."

"Sit."

The command was firm.

But different this time.

Not cold.

Hazel sat.

Damian opened the medical supplies.

She expected him to give her instructions.

Instead, he took a piece of cloth and carefully wrapped her finger.

Hazel watched him.

"You do this often?"

"No."

"Then why are you good at it?"

Damian didn't answer.

That was the first sign she had touched something personal.

Hazel lowered her eyes.

"Sorry."

"You apologize too much."

She looked up.

"What?"

"You say sorry even when you aren't the problem."

The words surprised her.

Because they were true.

Hazel didn't know what to say.

Nobody had ever noticed that before.

Not Ethan.

Not her friends.

Not anyone.

Damian finished wrapping her finger.

Then his eyes fell on the envelope.

"Tell me about Frankie Sullivan."

Hazel became tense again.

"I told you. I don't know him."

"But he knows you."

She stayed silent.

Damian leaned back slightly.

"How much do you owe him?"

Hazel looked at him.

"How do you know I owe him?"

"Because people like Sullivan don't send reminders to people who don't owe them."

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But Damian saw.

"Sixty thousand."

The room went quiet.

Hazel looked away.

"You already know."

"I know numbers."

"Not my story."

"No."

Damian's voice softened.

"Not yet."

Hazel looked at him.

Not yet.

Those words felt strange.

Like he was not accusing her.

Like he was saying he wanted the truth.

She looked toward the sealed windows.

"I was dating someone."

"Who?"

"Ethan."

"What happened?"

"He disappeared."

"When?"

"Six months ago."

Damian watched her carefully.

"And the debt?"

"He left it behind."

"Why would Sullivan believe you owe it?"

Hazel's hands tightened.

"Because Ethan used my information."

Damian's expression changed.

A small movement.

But enough.

"You were framed."

Hazel laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because hearing someone say it out loud felt impossible.

"I don't know."

"You do."

She looked at him.

"What?"

"You know."

Damian leaned forward.

"You're not afraid of the debt."

Hazel froze.

"You're afraid of what happens if people find out why it exists."

She looked away.

Because he was right.

Before she could answer, Damian's communication device activated.

Adrian's voice came through.

"Boss."

Damian picked it up.

"Talk."

"We found the entry point."

"Where?"

Another pause.

Then:

"Your private archive room."

Damian's expression changed.

Hazel noticed immediately.

"What?"

He didn't answer.

"Damian."

It was the first time she said his name.

Not Mr. Romano.

Not boss.

Damian.

His eyes moved toward her.

Then toward the hallway.

The private archive room was where he kept everything.

Documents.

Records.

Secrets.

Nobody entered that room.

Nobody.

"Why would someone break into your archive?"

Damian didn't respond.

Because he already knew.

They weren't searching for information about him.

They were searching for something connected to Hazel.

A second later, Adrian spoke again.

"Boss..."

Damian waited.

"What did you find?"

Silence.

Then Adrian's voice became quieter.

"You need to see this yourself."

Damian stood.

Hazel followed his movement.

"See what?"

Damian looked at the locked door.

Then at her.

And for the first time that night, Hazel saw something she never expected.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For her.

Because whatever was inside that archive room...

It was connected to why Frankie Sullivan wanted her.

The security lock suddenly released.

May you like

The door slowly opened.

And on the other side stood someone who should not have been there.
