Chapter 11 - The Betrayal Inside The Estate

The voice came from the vault speakers.

"Your father died because of me."

Hazel stopped breathing.

The words echoed through the private vault.

Nobody moved.

Not Damian.

Not Marcus.

Not even Antonio.

Because everyone in that room understood one thing.

Someone had just confessed.

But not everyone understood why.

Hazel stared at the screen.

The person inside the vault remained hidden.

Only a shadow.

Only a voice.

Only enough to destroy everything she believed.

"Who are you?"

Her voice shook.

The person didn't answer.

Instead, the screen went black.

Damian immediately grabbed his phone.

"Lock every exit."

Marcus moved.

Then stopped.

Because nobody trusted him anymore.

Not after what they had learned.

Damian noticed.

"Marcus."

His security chief looked at him.

"Yes?"

"Stay where I can see you."

The words were quiet.

But they hurt.

Marcus looked down.

Because he knew.

The trust between them had broken.

And maybe it would never return.

Hazel watched Damian.

The man who always seemed untouchable looked different.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he was hurt.

Marcus had been more than an employee.

He had been family.

And now he was another person who had lied.

"Who else knows?" Damian asked.

Marcus looked at him.

"About the archive?"

"About Hazel."

A pause.

"Not many."

"That wasn't my question."

Marcus swallowed.

"Your father knew."

Antonio laughed softly.

"Of course he knew."

Everyone turned.

Antonio stepped closer.

"You still don't understand, Damian."

Damian looked at him.

"Understand what?"

"Your entire life has been built on protecting a secret you never actually knew."

Hazel felt a chill.

Antonio looked toward the vault.

"Thomas Brooks was not just a man who found information."

He paused.

"He was the only person who knew the original agreement."

"What agreement?" Hazel asked.

Antonio looked at her.

"The agreement that created everything."

Damian's expression hardened.

"Stop talking in circles."

Antonio smiled.

"Still impatient."

A pause.

"Just like your mother."

The room froze.

Hazel looked at him.

"My mother?"

Antonio looked away.

"Your mother was not running from danger."

"Then why did she leave?"

Antonio didn't answer.

And that silence was worse.

Because Hazel was starting to realize something.

Every person who disappeared from her life had a reason.

And none of those reasons had anything to do with not loving her.

They had to do with survival.

Damian opened the vault remotely.

The door unlocked.

Slowly.

Everyone prepared.

Weapons raised.

The room inside was empty.

Except for one thing.

A small recording device sitting in the center of the floor.

Hazel stared.

"That's it?"

Damian walked inside carefully.

Marcus followed.

Antonio stayed outside.

Damian picked up the device.

There was a label attached.

For Hazel.

Her heart tightened.

Again.

Everything led back to her.

Damian pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a familiar voice.

Thomas Brooks.

Hazel covered her mouth.

Her father's voice.

After all these years.

"Hazel."

A pause.

"If you are hearing this, then I failed to keep you away from this world."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I wanted you to have a normal life."

The recording continued.

"I wanted you to believe I was just your father."

Hazel closed her eyes.

Because that was the truth she had always known.

Her father fixing cars.

Her father making breakfast.

Her father teaching her how to ride a bike.

Not secrets.

Not archives.

Not danger.

"I made one mistake."

Thomas's voice became heavier.

"I trusted the wrong person."

Everyone became still.

Damian looked at Marcus.

Thomas continued.

"The person who betrayed me was not my enemy."

A pause.

"It was the person closest to me."

Hazel looked around the room.

Her eyes moved between Damian.

Marcus.

Antonio.

Wyatt.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had secrets.

Thomas continued.

"He helped me hide the archive."

The recording stopped for a second.

Then:

"And he was the reason they found me."

Hazel felt her stomach drop.

Damian stepped closer to the device.

"Who?"

Thomas answered.

"The man who raised Damian."

Antonio's expression changed.

Damian froze.

The recording continued.

"Antonio Romano."

Silence.

Hazel looked at Antonio.

The older man didn't react.

Not immediately.

Then he laughed.

Quietly.

Almost sadly.

"You always were dramatic, Thomas."

Damian turned.

"You killed him?"

Antonio looked at his son.

"No."

"Then explain."

Antonio looked toward Hazel.

"I didn't kill your father."

A pause.

"But I know who did."

Everyone waited.

"Who?"

Antonio's eyes moved toward Marcus.

The room went silent.

Marcus stepped back.

"No."

Damian looked at him.

Slowly.

"No."

Antonio smiled.

"Now you understand."

Marcus's face changed.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Acceptance.

Hazel stared.

"Marcus?"

He didn't answer.

Damian's voice became dangerous.

"Tell me I'm wrong."

Marcus looked at him.

For a moment, he looked like the same man who had protected Damian for years.

Then he said:

"I was there."

Hazel felt sick.

Damian didn't move.

"What did you just say?"

Marcus lowered his eyes.

"I was there the night Thomas died."

The words broke something.

Damian stepped closer.

"You told me he was killed by enemies."

"I was wrong."

"No."

Damian's voice became colder.

"You lied."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

Hazel looked at him.

"Why?"

Marcus looked at her.

And there was something in his expression that confused her.

Regret.

"I was trying to save you."

She shook her head.

"People keep saying that."

Her voice broke.

"Everyone says they are protecting me."

A tear fell.

"But I keep losing everyone."

Nobody spoke.

Because there was no defense against that.

Marcus looked at Damian.

"Your father wasn't the only person who wanted the archive."

"Who else?"

Marcus hesitated.

Then:

"The people who built this organization before Antonio."

Antonio's expression changed.

"The founders."

Marcus nodded.

"They were never gone."

Damian looked toward the files.

"So Thomas discovered them."

"Yes."

"And they killed him."

Marcus didn't answer.

But he didn't need to.

Hazel looked at Damian.

"What about my mother?"

Marcus's face changed.

And that was enough.

"What?"

He looked away.

"Your mother found out."

Hazel froze.

"She knew?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't she tell me?"

Marcus swallowed.

"Because she was afraid."

"Of what?"

A long pause.

Then Marcus whispered:

"Of what you would become if you knew the truth."

The sentence made no sense.

Until Damian looked at the final file.

The one they hadn't opened.

The one hidden beneath the archive.

Hazel noticed.

"What is that?"

Nobody answered.

Damian picked it up.

The label was different.

Not her name.

Not Thomas's name.

A single word.

HEIR.

Hazel stared.

"Whose heir?"

Damian opened the file.

Inside was one photograph.

A newborn baby.

And beneath it, a name.

His expression changed.

Hazel stepped closer.

"What?"

Damian looked at her.

And for the first time, she saw genuine shock.

Because the baby in the photograph was not a stranger.

It was him.

Damian.

But there was something written beneath the picture.

A sentence that changed everything.

Damian Romano was never Antonio Romano's son.

The lights suddenly went out.

Complete darkness.

Then a phone rang inside the vault.

Not Damian's.

Not Marcus's.

Not Hazel's.

The screen lit up with one incoming call.

May you like

And the caller name appeared:

Thomas Brooks.
