Chapter 10 - The File That Could Destroy Everyone

The voice came from the doorway.
"He never knew the betrayal came from me."
Hazel turned slowly.
Her heart refused to accept what she was seeing.
The person standing there was not Antonio.
Not Wyatt.
Not a stranger.
It was Marcus.
Damian’s security chief.
The man who had protected the Romano estate.
The man who had stood beside Damian for years.
The man who had told them someone inside the house was dangerous.
Hazel stared.
"No."
Marcus didn't move.
His face was unreadable.
But his silence said enough.
Damian stepped forward.
"Marcus."
One word.
Cold.
Dangerous.
A warning.
Marcus looked at him.
"I didn't want it to happen like this."
Damian’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Disappointment.
And somehow that was worse.
"How long?"
Marcus looked away.
Hazel felt her chest tighten.
"How long have you been lying?"
A long pause.
Then Marcus answered.
"Since before you knew my name."
The room went silent.
Hazel looked at Damian.
She expected him to explode.
But he didn't.
Damian Romano was calm.
Too calm.
And everyone who knew him understood what that meant.
"Why?"
Damian's voice was quiet.
Marcus looked at the file in his hand.
"Because Thomas Brooks found something he shouldn't have."
Hazel stepped forward.
"My father?"
Marcus nodded.
"Your father discovered the truth about the Romano organization."
Damian's eyes narrowed.
"What truth?"
Marcus looked at him.
"The truth about your father."
Antonio, standing near the wall, smiled slightly.
"Finally."
Everyone turned.
Antonio looked almost satisfied.
"Now you understand."
Damian ignored him.
"Explain."
Marcus held the file tighter.
"Twelve years ago, Antonio Romano wasn't attacked by enemies."
A pause.
"He was betrayed by his own people."
Hazel looked confused.
"But he survived."
Marcus nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why did everyone think he was dead?"
"Because someone needed him gone."
Damian looked at Antonio.
"And you knew?"
Antonio laughed softly.
"I knew someone wanted me dead."
He looked at Marcus.
"I just didn't know who."
Marcus's expression hardened.
"I wasn't trying to kill you."
Damian stared.
"Then what were you doing?"
Marcus looked at Hazel.
"I was trying to keep the archive hidden."
Hazel shook her head.
"You destroyed people's lives to protect a secret?"
Marcus didn't answer.
Because that was exactly what he had done.
The room felt smaller.
Every person inside carried a different piece of the truth.
And Hazel was standing in the middle of all of it.
Still trying to understand why her name was written everywhere.
Damian took the file from Marcus.
"What is this?"
Marcus looked at him.
"The original archive."
Hazel looked at the folder.
"The one my father found?"
Marcus nodded.
"Thomas copied everything before they destroyed the first version."
Damian opened it.
Inside were documents.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
But one page made him stop.
Hazel noticed.
"What?"
Damian didn't answer.
She walked closer.
The page contained a list.
At the top:
PROTECTED SUBJECTS
Below were names.
Many names.
But one name was circled.
Hazel Brooks.
Her stomach dropped.
"Why am I there?"
Nobody spoke.
Then her mother answered.
"Because you were never the target."
Hazel turned.
"What?"
Her mother stepped closer.
"They were trying to find what your father hid."
"What did he hide?"
Her mother looked at Damian.
"Not what."
A pause.
"Who."
The room went silent.
Damian looked at the file again.
Then slowly turned the page.
His expression changed.
Hazel saw it.
The moment he understood.
"What is it?"
Damian didn't respond.
She reached for the paper.
He stopped her.
"Hazel."
The way he said her name made her freeze.
Because it wasn't a command.
It was fear.
"What?"
Damian looked at her.
"The archive doesn't contain information about your father."
"Then what?"
"It contains information about you."
Her breath caught.
"No."
He placed the document down.
"The night your father died wasn't about the archive."
Hazel stared.
"Then what was it about?"
Damian looked at Antonio.
Then Marcus.
Then her mother.
Finally, he said:
"It was about keeping you hidden."
Hazel felt tears forming.
"I don't understand."
Her mother moved closer.
"When you were a child, your father discovered someone was using innocent families to hide illegal operations."
Hazel listened.
"He wanted to expose them."
"Who?"
Her mother looked at Antonio.
"Powerful people."
Antonio nodded slowly.
"People who had influence everywhere."
Hazel looked at the names.
"Why didn't my father go to the police?"
Her mother smiled sadly.
"Because the police were already compromised."
The words hung in the air.
Damian closed the file.
"Where is the final piece?"
Everyone looked at him.
Marcus answered.
"Thomas hid it before he died."
"Where?"
Marcus looked at Hazel.
She immediately noticed.
"Why are you looking at me?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Because he left instructions."
"For me?"
"Yes."
Her heart raced.
"What instructions?"
Marcus looked at the folder.
"Your father said only you could open the final message."
Hazel shook her head.
"No."
"It's true."
"I was a child."
"He knew."
A pause.
"He planned for the possibility that one day you would need to know."
Hazel looked at Damian.
"And you?"
Damian understood.
She wasn't asking about the file.
She was asking about the promise.
"You knew my father left something for me."
"Yes."
"And you never told me."
Damian looked down.
"I promised him I wouldn't."
Her eyes filled.
"You promised him."
Not me.
The words stayed unspoken.
Damian looked like he wanted to explain.
But he didn't.
Because maybe there was no explanation.
Then every phone in the room rang at the same time.
Everyone froze.
Marcus checked his device.
His face changed.
"What?"
Damian looked at him.
"Speak."
Marcus looked toward the archive entrance.
"The security system detected a breach."
"Where?"
Marcus swallowed.
"The private vault."
Damian immediately moved.
"No one has access to that vault."
Marcus looked at Hazel.
Then at Damian.
"Someone just opened it."
The room became silent.
"Who?"
Marcus checked the screen.
His expression disappeared.
Because the answer was impossible.
Damian stepped closer.
"What did you see?"
Marcus slowly turned the monitor around.
The camera showed the private vault.
The door was open.
Inside, someone was standing in the darkness.
Holding the final piece of Thomas Brooks' archive.
Hazel couldn't see the face.
But she heard the voice through the speakers.
A voice she knew.
A voice that should not have been there.
The person looked directly into the camera.
And whispered:
"Hazel... your father never died because of Damian."
May you like
A pause.
"Your father died because of me."
