Chapter 6 - The Daughter Hidden From The World

The phone call ended.
But nobody moved.
The words stayed in the room.
“She’s coming for Lily.”
I looked down at my newborn daughter.
She was sleeping.
Peaceful.
Unaware.
While the adults around her were frozen by a truth that had been buried for years.
My first instinct was simple.
Protect her.
I pulled Lily closer.
Alessandro noticed.
His expression changed.
Not because he was angry.
Because he understood.
A man like him had spent his entire life surrounded by enemies.
But at that moment, he looked like a father who had just realized another person wanted to take a child away.
“Who is she?” I asked.
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Alessandro looked at me.
“I don’t know.”
I stared at him.
“You don’t know?”
His jaw tightened.
“I know who she is.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
The silence returned.
Because I wasn’t asking about a stranger anymore.
I was asking about the missing pieces of his life.
The parts he never told anyone.
The parts that somehow connected my daughter, my husband, and a woman named Isabella.
Andrew stood near the wall.
For the first time since entering the room, he looked smaller.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just a man trapped by secrets he helped create.
“You knew her,” I said to Alessandro.
He didn’t deny it.
“Yes.”
“How?”
He looked at the floor.
“Isabella was someone I loved.”
The words hurt unexpectedly.
Not because I loved Alessandro.
I barely knew him.
But because I knew what it felt like to discover that the person standing in front of you had an entire hidden life.
Andrew had done that to me.
And now Alessandro had a secret too.
“What happened to her?”
His eyes lifted.
“She disappeared.”
“Seven years ago?”
“Yes.”
“And the child?”
His face changed.
A rare crack appeared in the man everyone feared.
“She was taken.”
My heart tightened.
“By who?”
Nobody answered.
That was when I knew.
The answer was worse than I expected.
Alessandro walked toward the window.
“My enemies wanted leverage.”
His voice became colder.
“They knew Isabella was the only person who could make me weak.”
I looked at him.
“And they took her daughter.”
He nodded.
“I searched for years.”
“What did you find?”
“Nothing.”
The honesty in his voice surprised me.
A man like Alessandro Moretti admitted failure only if the wound was deep.
“Then how does Jonathan Whitman know?”
Andrew finally spoke.
“Because my father was involved.”
Everyone turned toward him.
I felt disgust before I felt surprise.
“You knew?”
Andrew looked at me.
“Not everything.”
“That’s not an answer.”
His eyes dropped.
“I knew my father was hiding something.”
“And you still married me?”
The question came out broken.
Andrew looked away.
I understood.
That hurt more than any explanation.
Because it meant he knew there was darkness around him.
And he still brought me into it.
“I thought it was unrelated.”
I stared at him.
“You thought?”
My voice became sharper.
“You thought your family’s secrets were unrelated while you built a life with me?”
Andrew had no answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
Alessandro turned toward him.
“You knew about Isabella.”
Andrew looked at him.
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
Alessandro moved closer.
The room temperature seemed to drop.
“You expect me to believe that?”
Andrew swallowed.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because if I knew where she was…”
He stopped.
“Finish the sentence.”
Andrew looked at Lily.
“If I knew where she was, I would have told you.”
Nobody believed him.
Not completely.
But something about his voice was different.
For the first time, he wasn’t performing.
He looked afraid.
A security officer entered the room.
“Sir.”
Alessandro turned.
“We found the woman from the call.”
My body stiffened.
“She’s alive?”
The officer nodded.
“But she’s injured.”
Alessandro immediately grabbed his coat.
“Where?”
“She’s being brought here.”
“No.”
The officer hesitated.
“She refused to go anywhere else.”
“Why?”
The man looked at me.
Then at Lily.
“Because she said she knows where the missing child is.”
The room went silent.
A missing child.
A daughter Alessandro had spent seven years searching for.
A child Jonathan Whitman tried to erase.
A child connected to Isabella.
I watched Alessandro.
For the first time, I saw hope.
Real hope.
And that scared me.
Because hope was something people could destroy.
Minutes later, the woman arrived.
Two security guards helped her inside.
She looked exhausted.
Older than she probably was.
Her clothes were torn.
A bruise covered part of her face.
But when she saw Alessandro, she started crying.
“I’m sorry.”
He stopped.
“You’re alive.”
She nodded.
“Barely.”
“Who did this?”
She looked toward Lily.
Then toward me.
Her expression changed.
Fear.
“You’re Grace.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
She stepped closer.
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
I immediately looked at Alessandro.
“What does that mean?”
The woman closed her eyes.
“I tried to stop them.”
“Stop who?”
She looked at Alessandro.
“Your father.”
His expression darkened.
“My father is dead.”
“No.”
The woman whispered.
“Not him.”
Everyone froze.
She looked at me.
“Jonathan Whitman.”
My blood ran cold.
“He’s alive?”
Andrew stepped back.
“No.”
The woman looked at him.
“You knew.”
Andrew’s face went pale.
“What are you talking about?”
“You knew your father wasn’t the one controlling everything.”
Silence.
Alessandro moved forward.
“Tell me the truth.”
The woman looked terrified.
“I was Jonathan’s assistant.”
I felt sick.
“He had records.”
“What records?” I asked.
She looked at Lily.
“Birth records.”
The room became still.
“He changed names. He changed documents. He made people disappear.”
Alessandro’s voice lowered.
“Where is Isabella?”
The woman hesitated.
Then whispered:
“She never died.”
My heart stopped.
Alessandro didn’t move.
“What?”
“She was kept hidden.”
“Where?”
The woman looked at the door.
Like she was afraid someone was listening.
“She escaped once.”
“Where did she go?”
The woman looked at me.
And I knew before she spoke.
Something about her expression told me.
This answer would change everything.
“She went to the only person she believed could protect her daughter.”
Alessandro stepped closer.
“Who?”
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“Grace Jennings.”
I froze.
“What?”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.”
The woman reached into her bag.
Her hands trembled.
She pulled out an old envelope.
Yellowed.
Damaged.
And placed it on the table.
My name was written across the front.
Not recently.
Not seven years ago.
Much earlier.
My fingers went numb.
“I don’t understand.”
The woman whispered:
“You were never chosen by Andrew Whitman.”
I looked at her.
“Then why?”
She looked at Lily.
“Because Isabella trusted you.”
Alessandro picked up the envelope.
But before he opened it, his phone suddenly rang.
Everyone turned.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed instantly.
“What is it?” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
Because the message on the screen contained only one sentence.
A sentence that made him drop the phone.
“We found Isabella.”
May you like
Then another message appeared.
“But she isn’t alone.”
