Chapter 4 - The Man Who Came Back For His Daughters

Andrew Whitman stood outside the clinic.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The man who had watched me leave his mansion in the rain.
The man who had looked at his newborn daughter and called her useless.
The man who had closed the door while my children cried.
He was here.
Not because he was sorry.
Not because he missed us.
Because he wanted something.
Alessandro stared at the security monitor without moving.
That frightened me more than if he had shouted.
I had learned something about powerful men.
The loud ones were often pretending.
The quiet ones were usually deciding what to do.
“Lock the floor,” Alessandro said.
His security officer immediately nodded.
“Already done, sir.”
I looked between them.
“Wait.”
Everyone stopped.
I stood beside Lily’s hospital bed.
“What is he doing here?”
Nobody answered.
I looked at Alessandro.
“What does he want?”
His expression remained cold.
“You.”
The word made my stomach tighten.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Alessandro looked at the screen again.
“Because you found out something you weren’t supposed to know.”
I shook my head.
“I don’t know anything.”
“That’s exactly why you’re dangerous.”
I stared at him.
“How can not knowing something make me dangerous?”
His eyes moved toward Lily.
“Because the truth is still hidden.”
My daughter.
Everything kept coming back to Lily.
A secret.
A photograph.
A woman who sounded terrified.
A warning that Andrew was not trying to take my daughters back.
He was trying to hide something.
I looked down at my baby.
She was sleeping peacefully.
She had no idea that powerful people were fighting over her.
She had no idea that her existence had become a threat.
“She’s just a baby,” I whispered.
Alessandro’s voice softened.
“I know.”
“Then why?”
He looked at me.
“Because sometimes babies are born into wars they never chose.”
The words stayed with me.
Before I could answer, there was a knock.
Everyone in the room immediately became alert.
Alessandro raised one hand.
The entire room froze.
A security officer approached the door.
“Sir.”
“Yes?”
“Andrew Whitman requested a meeting.”
I laughed quietly.
It wasn’t because anything was funny.
It was because the situation was unbelievable.
“He requests a meeting?”
Alessandro looked at me.
“With me?”
The officer nodded.
“He said he wants to speak with his wife and daughters.”
My chest tightened.
Wife.
Daughters.
The words sounded wrong coming from someone like Andrew.
An hour ago, they were useless.
Now they were his.
“No,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
I surprised even myself.
“No.”
Alessandro watched me carefully.
“Grace.”
“I’m not letting him walk in here and pretend nothing happened.”
My voice shook.
“But you can’t stop him.”
Alessandro stepped closer.
“Yes.”
The confidence in his voice almost scared me.
“Yes, I can.”
I looked at him.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand exactly.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You don’t know what he’s like.”
Alessandro’s expression changed slightly.
“Then tell me.”
I looked away.
Because telling him meant admitting how long I had ignored the signs.
How many times I had explained away Andrew’s behavior.
How many times I had convinced myself that love was supposed to hurt sometimes.
“He wasn’t always like this.”
Alessandro stayed silent.
“When Emma was born, he cried.”
My voice became quieter.
“He held her for hours.”
I smiled sadly.
“He told me she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.”
I looked at Emma sleeping on the couch.
“Then his father came.”
The smile disappeared.
“After that, everything changed.”
I told Alessandro about the comments.
The pressure.
The questions about having another child.
The disappointment every time the ultrasound showed another girl.
“I kept thinking he would come back.”
I swallowed.
“I thought the man I married was still somewhere inside him.”
Alessandro looked at me.
“And now?”
I looked toward the locked door.
“Now I know he chose this.”
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Alessandro walked toward the door.
“I’ll handle him.”
I immediately followed.
“No.”
He stopped.
“I need to know what he wants.”
His eyes narrowed.
“He’s not here to apologize.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
I took a breath.
“Because I spent seven years letting him control the story.”
I looked at Lily.
“I won’t let him do that anymore.”
Something changed in Alessandro’s expression.
Not approval.
Respect.
He nodded.
“Stay behind me.”
The door opened.
Andrew walked in.
And seeing him again was like being thrown back into the storm.
Except this time I wasn’t standing alone.
He looked exactly the same.
Perfect suit.
Perfect hair.
Perfect smile.
The same man who looked good in photographs.
The same man who knew how to fool everyone.
His eyes immediately went to me.
Then to Lily.
Then Emma and Sophie.
“Grace.”
He said my name like he was worried.
Like he was the victim.
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“Andrew.”
He took a step forward.
“I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”
I stared at him.
“You reported me missing.”
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
“I was concerned.”
“You told the police I left willingly.”
“I was confused.”
“You watched your employees push me out of our home.”
Silence.
His eyes moved toward Alessandro.
And the moment he saw him, his entire face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Alessandro Moretti.”
Alessandro didn’t respond.
Andrew forced a smile.
“I didn’t expect to find my wife here.”
Alessandro’s voice was cold.
“You didn’t come here for your wife.”
Andrew looked at him.
“I came for my family.”
My hands tightened.
Family.
That word again.
A word he only used when it benefited him.
“You abandoned your family.”
Andrew looked at me.
“I made a mistake.”
The words shocked me.
Not because they mattered.
Because they came too easily.
A practiced apology.
“I was angry.”
“You called Lily useless.”
His jaw tightened.
“I said things I regret.”
“No.”
I stepped forward.
“You meant them.”
Andrew looked at me.
And for the first time, his perfect mask slipped.
“Grace.”
His voice became lower.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.”
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?”
He looked at Alessandro.
“He hasn’t told you.”
Nobody moved.
Alessandro’s eyes sharpened.
“Told her what?”
Andrew smiled.
And I knew immediately.
This was not an apology.
It was a weapon.
“Ask him why he found you.”
My heart started beating faster.
I looked at Alessandro.
Andrew continued.
“Ask him why he was watching that park tonight.”
The room went silent.
I looked at Alessandro.
“Is that true?”
He didn’t answer.
That was the worst answer.
“Alessandro?”
Before he could speak, Andrew stepped closer.
“Grace, you think this man saved you.”
His smile disappeared.
“But you have no idea what he was looking for.”
Alessandro moved forward.
“Enough.”
Andrew ignored him.
“He knows why Lily matters.”
My blood went cold.
“What does that mean?”
Andrew looked at me.
Then at my daughter.
And whispered:
“Because Lily isn’t the first child they tried to hide.”
The entire room froze.
Alessandro’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Shock.
Real shock.
Andrew smiled.
Because he knew he had finally said something that mattered.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And the color disappeared from his face.
May you like
Because the message he received was not from his father.
It was from someone who was supposed to be dead.
