Chapter 6 - The Son I Never Knew

The man standing in Luca's doorway looked exactly like me.
Same eyes.
Same jawline.
Same scar above the eyebrow.
A scar I had carried since I was nineteen.
A scar nobody else had.
My body reacted before my mind could.
I moved toward Luca.
Fast.
Protective.
The man immediately stepped back.
"Adrian."
Hearing my own voice coming from someone else's mouth was something I never thought I would experience.
Luca looked between us.
Confused.
"Dad?"
I stopped.
Because there was only one person in that room who mattered.
My son.
The boy who had asked me to feed strangers.
The boy who had trusted me without knowing the darkness surrounding him.
I looked at the man holding his hand.
"Let him go."
The man slowly released Luca.
"I wasn't hurting him."
"I didn't ask."
My security team moved instantly.
Weapons appeared.
The man didn't react.
That bothered me.
A person facing armed men usually showed fear.
He didn't.
He looked tired.
Like someone who had spent his entire life running from a truth nobody wanted him to know.
Evelyn stepped forward.
Her face had lost all color.
"Daniel."
The man looked at her.
"You knew."
She closed her eyes.
"I suspected."
I turned.
"Who is Daniel?"
Nobody answered immediately.
Then the man looked at me.
"My name is Daniel Cross."
The room went silent.
Cross.
The same last name as Evelyn.
The same family name from the documents.
My eyes moved between them.
"You're related."
Daniel nodded.
"I'm her son."
Everything connected.
The photograph.
The records.
The child Marcus had hidden.
But something still didn't make sense.
I looked at Daniel.
"How old are you?"
His expression changed.
"Twenty years old."
The number hit me.
Twenty.
Exactly.
The same age my son would have been if the truth had never been hidden.
I looked at Evelyn.
"Tell me."
She knew what I was asking.
She knew there was no more room for half-truths.
Evelyn sat down slowly.
"After Anna disappeared, Marcus told me you would never forgive me if you knew."
I stared at her.
"Why?"
"Because I helped him."
The admission shocked everyone.
Even Claire.
"You helped him?"
Evelyn looked down.
"Not at first."
Her voice became quieter.
"Marcus came to me after Anna gave birth."
I felt my hands tighten.
"He said you were in danger."
I laughed bitterly.
"Of course he did."
Evelyn continued.
"He told me enemies were looking for a weakness. He said your child would become a target."
Daniel looked away.
"She believed him."
I looked at him.
"You were a baby."
He nodded.
"That's what everyone told me."
My eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel looked at me.
"I grew up believing my father abandoned me."
The words were quiet.
But they hurt.
"I was told Adrian Voss chose power over his own family."
I felt something break inside.
Because I knew exactly who had created that story.
Marcus.
"He took me away," Daniel said.
"Changed my name."
"Moved me from place to place."
"Made sure I never found you."
I looked at Evelyn.
"And you allowed this?"
Her eyes filled with regret.
"I was young."
I said nothing.
"Afraid."
Still nothing.
"And Marcus convinced me he was protecting everyone."
I walked toward the table.
The anger inside me was almost impossible to control.
For twenty years.
Twenty years, I had believed I lost something because of fate.
Because of circumstances.
Because life was cruel.
But the truth was worse.
Someone had taken my son.
Someone I trusted.
Someone I called brother.
Luca quietly approached.
"Dad."
I looked down.
He held a drawing.
A picture he had been making earlier at the diner.
It showed four people.
Me.
Him.
Claire.
Lily.
He looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
"Is he your brother?"
The question almost destroyed me.
Because children saw things differently.
They didn't see secrets.
They saw people.
I knelt beside him.
"I don't know yet."
Daniel heard that.
And for the first time, his expression changed.
Pain.
Not anger.
Pain.
"I spent my whole life waiting for you to say that."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because Marcus told me you would never want me."
The room became silent.
My son.
The one I raised.
The one I lost.
Both standing in front of me.
Two lives shaped by one man's lies.
I walked to Daniel.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Because I didn't know what to say.
No words could repair twenty years.
No apology could return the childhood he lost.
"I'm sorry."
The words came out quietly.
Daniel looked away.
"I don't know if that fixes anything."
"It doesn't."
I nodded.
"I know."
For some reason, that honesty mattered.
He looked back at me.
"Then why say it?"
"Because someone should have."
A silence followed.
Then Evelyn moved toward the computer.
"There is something else."
I turned.
"What now?"
She opened another file.
"Marcus didn't only hide Daniel."
A new document appeared.
A list.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
My expression changed.
"What is this?"
"Everyone Marcus removed."
I scanned the names.
People from my company.
People who disappeared.
People who resigned suddenly.
People I thought betrayed me.
They didn't.
They were victims.
Marcus had been cleaning my world one person at a time.
Removing anyone who could expose him.
Claire looked at the screen.
"How many people?"
Evelyn answered quietly.
"Thirty-two."
My stomach tightened.
Thirty-two lives.
Thirty-two stories.
Thirty-two people who vanished because one man wanted control.
Then I saw the final name.
My eyes stopped.
Because it wasn't a stranger.
It wasn't a former employee.
It was someone still alive.
Someone close.
Someone who had been standing beside me for years.
I looked at Evelyn.
"No."
She nodded.
"Yes."
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Everyone looked at me.
I answered.
A voice spoke immediately.
Not Marcus.
Someone else.
Someone I trusted.
"Adrian."
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It was impossible.
"You need to listen carefully."
I didn't breathe.
"Marcus is coming for Daniel."
My grip tightened.
"Where are you?"
A pause.
Then:
"I'm with him."
The line went silent for a second.
Then the person whispered:
"And Adrian... Marcus isn't the person you should be afraid of."
I looked around the room.
At Evelyn.
At Daniel.
At Luca.
Then the voice said one final sentence.
May you like
"The man who started all of this has been inside your house for years."
