Chapter 4 - The Secret Behind The Glass

Luca pointed at the diner window.

"Dad... that man said he knew you."

For a moment, I couldn't move.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was calculating.

Every instinct I had built over twenty years screamed the same thing.

Danger.

I ended the call with Marcus.

No goodbye.

No warning.

Nothing.

I walked back to the table.

"Who was he?"

Luca looked toward the window again.

But the sidewalk was empty.

The man was gone.

"He was there," Luca said.

His small voice carried no fear.

Only confusion.

"He looked at me."

I crouched beside him.

"What did he say?"

Luca thought for a second.

"He said..."

He looked at me.

"He said, 'Your father doesn't know the truth.'"

The words hit harder than they should have.

Because they sounded exactly like something Marcus would say.

A warning.

A threat.

Or maybe a confession.

I stood slowly.

Evelyn watched my face.

"You heard him."

I looked at her.

"You knew someone was watching us."

Her expression changed.

"No."

I studied her carefully.

For years, I had survived because I could recognize lies.

But that night, everyone around me was telling pieces of the truth.

And somehow that was worse.

Evelyn looked at Claire.

Then at Luca.

"Adrian, we need to leave."

I looked at the flash drive on the table.

"No."

Her eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

"Because if someone wanted me to find this, they wanted me to run."

I picked up the drive.

"And I'm done running."

The woman who had once been accused of betraying me looked at me differently.

Not with fear.

With understanding.

She knew that feeling.

The moment someone stops reacting.

And starts fighting back.

I turned toward my security team.

"Get the car ready."

Two men immediately moved.

Claire stood.

"What about us?"

I looked at her daughter.

Then at Luca.

"You come with me."

She hesitated.

"You trust me now?"

I looked at the evidence.

The fake debt.

The deleted voicemail.

The picture of a woman who was supposed to be dead.

"No."

Her face changed slightly.

"But I trust Marcus less."

That was enough.

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at one of my private locations.

Not my mansion.

Not my office.

Somewhere nobody outside my closest circle knew existed.

A hidden building beneath an old warehouse near the harbor.

A place designed for secrets.

Claire walked inside holding Lily's hand.

Luca stayed beside me.

He was quiet.

Too quiet.

I knew my son.

When Luca became silent, it meant he was thinking.

"You have questions," I said.

He nodded.

"Is Marcus bad?"

I stopped walking.

Children deserved simple answers.

But sometimes adults created complicated worlds and forced children to live inside them.

"I don't know yet."

Luca looked surprised.

"You don't know?"

I shook my head.

"No."

That was the hardest truth I had spoken in years.

Because I always knew.

At least I thought I did.

The building doors closed behind us.

Evelyn connected the flash drive to the main computer.

The screen remained black.

Nothing happened.

Then she typed a password.

I watched her.

"You know the password?"

She didn't look away.

"Marcus gave it to me."

That got my attention.

"He trusted you?"

Evelyn smiled sadly.

"No."

She pressed enter.

"He wanted me to believe he did."

The screen opened.

Folders appeared.

Hundreds of files.

Financial records.

Private messages.

Audio recordings.

I stepped closer.

"This is everything?"

"No."

Evelyn clicked one folder.

"This is what he wanted someone to find."

I looked at her.

"And what does that mean?"

She turned the monitor toward me.

"There is another layer."

The screen showed hidden files.

Encrypted.

Protected.

My eyes narrowed.

"Can you open them?"

Evelyn shook her head.

"Not without the second key."

"Where is it?"

Her expression changed.

"With the person Marcus trusted most."

I already knew the answer.

"Who?"

She looked at me.

"You."

Silence filled the room.

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

"I don't have any key."

Evelyn nodded.

"You do."

She opened another file.

A video appeared.

The date was seven years ago.

The day before she disappeared.

The camera showed Marcus entering an office.

My office.

Then another person walked in.

Someone standing beside him.

Someone I recognized immediately.

My own face appeared on the screen.

But I wasn't there.

Not really.

It was a recording.

A conversation I had never seen.

Marcus was speaking.

"You don't understand, Adrian."

The recording version of me stood silently.

Then Marcus said:

"Once she disappears, everything belongs to us."

I felt my chest tighten.

Because I knew that voice.

I knew that room.

But I didn't remember that conversation.

I stepped closer.

"That's fake."

Evelyn didn't answer.

The video continued.

Marcus placed documents on the desk.

Then the camera angle changed.

And I saw something that made me stop breathing.

The man sitting across from Marcus was not me.

It was someone wearing my clothes.

Someone who looked almost identical.

The room went silent.

Claire covered her mouth.

"What is that?"

I didn't answer.

Because I didn't know.

For years, I believed Marcus betrayed me.

Now I wondered if he had been hiding something much bigger.

Evelyn paused the video.

"Adrian."

I looked at her.

"There is something you need to understand."

"What?"

She hesitated.

"The person who helped Marcus destroy you wasn't pretending to be you."

My expression changed.

"Then what?"

Her voice became quieter.

"He was pretending to be someone who knew you."

The words made no sense.

Until I saw the next file.

A medical record.

A photograph.

A name.

I opened it.

And everything inside me went cold.

Because the person Marcus had been working with was someone I had buried years ago.

Someone who was supposed to have died.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone turned.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

I read it twice.

Then I felt every muscle in my body tighten.

The message said:

"Adrian, stop looking for the truth about Marcus. Look for the truth about yourself."

A second message arrived.

With an attachment.

A photograph.

I opened it.

And saw a picture of me standing beside Marcus twenty years earlier.

But behind us was a little boy.

A boy with my eyes.

A boy who looked exactly like Luca.

May you like

And underneath the photo was one sentence:

"Your son was never the first child they protected."
