Chapter 8 - The Family That Survived The Lie

A video stopped playing and Naomi whispered: "Roman, the truth was never about who the father was."
I found the original DNA report hidden inside the old family archive.
One sentence was written beneath it: "They tried to destroy what belonged to you."
I finally understood the enemy was never my wife.
The room was silent.
Everyone stared at the frozen image on the screen.
The person standing beside Naomi in the video.
The person I trusted.
The person who had been helping us uncover the truth.
Sabrina.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Sabrina slowly stepped forward.
Her face was pale.
"Roman..."
I looked at her.
I didn't feel anger first.
I felt disappointment.
Because after everything, I wanted to believe there was at least one person who had been honest with me.
But the truth was standing right in front of me.
"How long?"
My voice was quiet.
Sabrina lowered her eyes.
"From the beginning."
Naomi looked at her.
"Why?"
Sabrina closed her eyes.
"Because I was trying to protect you."
Nobody moved.
Her words sounded exactly like every other lie I had heard.
But something was different.
She wasn't trying to escape.
She wasn't defending herself.
She looked broken.
I looked at Naomi's father.
"You knew."
He smiled.
"Of course."
My hands tightened.
"You used everyone."
He looked at me.
"I used what was necessary."
Naomi stepped forward.
"You destroyed my life."
Her father's expression changed slightly.
"You survived."
"No."
Her voice shook.
"I lived in fear. I lost years with my husband. I lost the chance to raise my children peacefully."
She looked at him.
"You didn't protect me."
She pointed at him.
"You controlled me."
For the first time, the old man's confidence disappeared.
I looked at the DNA report again.
The one that almost destroyed everything.
"The test was fake."
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
He picked up the papers.
"The samples were switched before the test was completed."
I looked at Sabrina.
"How did you know?"
She took a breath.
"Because I helped create the fake report."
Naomi looked shocked.
"Why?"
Sabrina looked at her.
"Because your father forced me."
The room became quiet.
Sabrina continued.
"Three years ago, I found out what he was doing. He had people inside the company, inside the hospital, everywhere."
She looked at Roman.
"When Naomi became pregnant, he became afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
Sabrina looked at me.
"That you would leave everything behind for your children."
I frowned.
"What?"
She nodded.
"He knew you. He knew if you had a family, his control over you would disappear."
Naomi's father looked away.
The first sign of weakness.
Sabrina continued.
"He wanted Naomi to disappear."
My jaw tightened.
"And you helped him."
Tears filled her eyes.
"Yes."
The honesty surprised me.
"I helped him because he threatened my family."
Nobody spoke.
"I thought I could control the damage. I thought I could keep Naomi alive."
She looked at Naomi.
"But I failed."
Naomi stared at her.
"You let me believe you wanted my life."
Sabrina shook her head.
"I wanted your life because I was jealous."
A tear fell.
"But I never wanted you dead."
The truth was painful.
Messy.
Not simple.
Not everyone was a villain.
Not everyone was innocent.
Sometimes people made terrible choices because they were afraid.
I looked at Naomi.
"And the twins?"
Her expression softened.
She walked toward me.
"The twins are yours."
I stopped breathing for a second.
She continued.
"My father changed the records because he wanted you to doubt me."
She touched her stomach.
"The babies were the only thing I had left that was completely ours."
My eyes filled.
All the anger.
All the pain.
All the nights believing I had lost everything.
It suddenly felt like I was standing at the edge of a life I almost never got back.
I stepped toward Naomi.
"I thought I lost you."
She cried.
"I know."
"I buried you."
"I know."
"I hated myself because I couldn't save you."
Her tears fell.
"You saved me."
I shook my head.
"No."
I looked at her.
"You saved yourself."
For the first time in months, Naomi smiled.
A real smile.
The kind I remembered.
Behind us, her father tried to move.
Adrian noticed.
"Don't."
The old man stopped.
Security entered the room.
My security team.
They had followed my instructions.
I looked at the man who had caused years of pain.
"You built an empire by making everyone afraid."
He stared at me.
"And what will you do?"
I looked at Naomi.
Then at the picture of our family.
"I will build something you never understood."
He waited.
"A family."
The authorities took him away.
The man who had controlled everything finally lost control of the one thing he cared about most.
Power.
Six months later.
The world knew a different story.
The rumors about Naomi D’Angelo's death disappeared.
The truth came out slowly.
The investigation revealed the false medical records, the manipulation, and the people who had helped hide the truth.
Many people apologized.
Some disappeared.
Some faced consequences.
But Roman no longer cared about revenge.
He cared about what remained.
His family.
Naomi's recovery was not easy.
There were nights when she woke up scared.
Nights when memories returned.
But every morning, Roman was there.
Every morning, she remembered she was safe.
The twins were born on a quiet spring morning.
A boy and a girl.
Two tiny lives that had survived every lie created around them.
Roman held them both carefully.
Naomi watched from the hospital bed.
"You look terrified."
Roman smiled.
"I am."
She laughed softly.
"You?"
"The most feared man in the city?"
He looked at the babies.
"These two are the only people who can make me afraid."
Naomi reached for his hand.
"You always wanted to protect everyone."
Roman looked at her.
"Not everyone."
He squeezed her hand.
"Just you."
One year later, Roman and Naomi returned to the place where everything had started.
The old family house.
But this time, it wasn't a place of fear.
It was a home.
The rooms that once held secrets were filled with laughter.
The walls that once carried lies now carried pictures.
Pictures of their children.
Pictures of their family.
Adrian became part of their lives again.
Not as a secret.
Not as someone hiding in the shadows.
But as Naomi's brother.
Sabrina left the city after the trial.
Before leaving, she sent Naomi one final letter.
It wasn't an apology.
It wasn't an excuse.
It was simply the truth.
"I spent years wanting what you had. I didn't understand that the thing I wanted was never the money or the life. It was the love you built."
Naomi kept the letter.
Not because she forgave everything.
But because she understood.
Everyone had a choice.
Some chose fear.
Some chose control.
And some chose to change.
Years later, Roman stood in the garden watching his children run across the grass.
Naomi walked beside him.
The same woman he thought he lost.
The same woman he found again.
She leaned against him.
"Do you ever think about that night?"
Roman looked at the house.
The place where everything almost ended.
Then he looked at his family.
"No."
Naomi smiled.
"Really?"
He nodded.
"Because every time I look at you, I remember something."
"What?"
Roman held her hand.
"Some people spend their whole lives chasing power."
He looked at their children.
"But the greatest thing I ever had was something nobody could take."
Naomi rested her head on his shoulder.
For the first time in years, there were no secrets.
No hidden messages.
No enemies waiting in the shadows.
Only a family that survived everything meant to destroy it.
And finally, Roman D’Angelo understood the truth Naomi had been trying to protect from the beginning.

Love was never the weakness his enemies believed it was.
It was the reason he survived.
