Chapter 14 - The Choice at the Diner

Cassian didn't sleep that night.

Neither did Clara.

The news had reopened everything.

His father was alive.

The man everyone believed dead had been operating from the shadows.

But by morning, Cassian made a decision.

“No more running.”

Clara looked at him.

“What will you do?”

“Find him.”

“Then I'll come.”

“No.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“You don't get to decide that anymore.”

Cassian smiled.

“You're right.”

They traveled to an old property outside Manhattan.

The building had been abandoned for years.

Inside, they found evidence of Anton Rossi.

Photographs.

Letters.

Financial records.

And one recording.

Cassian pressed play.

His father's voice filled the room.

“If you're hearing this, Cassian, then everything went wrong.”

Cassian's hands tightened.

Anton explained that he had faked his death to escape a criminal organization that wanted control of the Rossi family.

He had spent years gathering evidence.

But he had also made terrible choices.

The greatest was trusting Derek.

Derek had sold information to Viktor.

Marco had helped him.

Adrian had unknowingly financed part of it.

The entire chain of betrayal had begun with one lie.

Anton ended the recording with a confession.

“I never wanted Clara harmed.”

Clara looked at Cassian.

“He knew about me.”

“Yes.”

Another recording began.

Elena's voice.

Then Adrian's.

Then Derek's.

The final recording was Viktor's.

Everything was documented.

Enough to bring down the entire network.

Cassian called the authorities.

For the first time, he chose the law over revenge.

Months later, the organization was dismantled.

Cassian cooperated fully.

He sold the remaining legitimate businesses.

He kept only the construction company that had been clean.

Clara returned to work.

Noah started preschool.

Life became ordinary.

Beautifully ordinary.

Then one Sunday morning, Cassian took Clara back to the diner.

The same booth.

He sat across from her.

“You remember this?”

“How could I forget?”

“You asked if you could sit here.”

“And you said yes.”

Cassian smiled.

“You were terrified.”

“I thought you were going to kill me.”

“I thought you were going to leave.”

She laughed.

Noah sat between them.

A waitress placed three plates on the table.

No threats.

No guards.

No black sedans.

Just breakfast.

Cassian reached for Clara's hand.

“I have something to tell you.”

“What?”

“I've sold everything.”

She frowned.

“What?”

“The last company tied to my family.”

She stared.

“Why?”

“Because I don't want Noah growing up surrounded by fear.”

Clara's eyes filled.

“You did that for us?”

“For all of us.”

He pulled a small envelope from his coat.

Inside were travel tickets.

“Where are we going?”

“Anywhere you want.”

Clara smiled.

“Somewhere warm.”

“Done.”

She leaned closer.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Then Noah suddenly pointed toward the diner entrance.

“Mommy.”

Clara turned.

A familiar man stood in the doorway.

Derek.

He was under police guard.

He looked at Clara.

Then at Cassian.

He smiled.

Cassian stood.

The officers escorted Derek away.

Before leaving, Derek whispered:

“You still don't know what your mother left behind.”

Clara froze.

Cassian looked at him.

Derek laughed.

Then the door closed.

Clara turned to Cassian.

“Is there another secret?”

Cassian shook his head.

“No.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

He kissed her hand.

And this time, Clara believed him.

Because the last secret wasn't waiting in another document.

It was already sitting at their table.

A three-year-old boy coloring a picture of his family.

And underneath the drawing, Noah had written three names:

Mommy. Cassian. Me.

For the first time, Clara understood that her past no longer owned her.

She reached for Cassian's hand.

May you like

He held it.

And they walked out of the diner together...
