Chapter 13 - The Man Cassian Could Not Forgive

The door opened.
Adrian entered.
Clara stared.
“Dad?”
He looked at Cassian.
“I owe you the truth.”
Cassian stood.
“What did you do?”
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“Years ago, I helped create the debt.”
Clara couldn't breathe.
“No.”
“I needed money to hide Elena.”
Cassian's expression hardened.
“You used my family's money.”
“Yes.”
“You allowed Derek to find the records.”
“Yes.”
Cassian stepped forward.
“People died because of that debt.”
Adrian nodded.
“I know.”
Clara stepped between them.
“Why?”
Adrian looked at her.
“To keep you alive.”
Cassian's voice was cold.
“You should have come to me.”
“I was afraid of your father.”
“My father is dead.”
“His enemies aren't.”
Adrian explained that the debt had been created to move Elena and Clara into hiding.
But Derek discovered the records.
He weaponized them.
The situation spiraled.
Clara understood.
Everyone had made decisions for her.
Everyone had believed they knew what was best.
Nobody had asked her.
She looked at Cassian.
“What happens now?”
He didn't answer.
Adrian left.
Cassian sat down.
“I should have told you everything.”
“Yes.”
“I was afraid you'd leave.”
Clara looked at him.
“I almost did.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
She sat beside him.
“But I stayed.”
Cassian looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because you gave me a choice.”
He smiled faintly.
“Then choose.”
Clara took his hand.
“I choose you.”
For several minutes, they sat quietly.
Then the doctor entered.
“Your mother is awake.”
Clara immediately stood.
Elena looked at her daughter.
“I am sorry.”
Clara cried.
“You should have trusted me.”
“I know.”
“I could have helped.”
“I know.”
They hugged.
For the first time, Clara felt like she had found the missing piece of herself.
Weeks passed.
Derek was charged.
Marco was imprisoned.
Viktor fled the country.
Cassian dismantled the parts of his organization connected to illegal operations.
He sold companies.
Closed accounts.
Cut ties.
He wanted a different life.
Clara watched him change.
One afternoon, he took her to the diner.
The same booth.
The same window.
The same marble table.
No guards this time.
No threats.
Just Noah coloring beside them.
Cassian placed a small box on the table.
Clara smiled.
“Another contract?”
“No.”
She opened it.
Inside was a ring.
Not the engagement ring from the arrangement.
A new one.
Simple.
Beautiful.
Cassian took her hand.
“This time, there are no debts.”
Clara's eyes filled.
“No inheritance.”
“No enemies.”
“No conditions.”
He looked into her eyes.
“Will you marry me?”
Clara smiled.
“Yes.”
Noah looked up.
“Mommy is getting married?”
Clara laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
Cassian reached across the table.
Then the diner television suddenly displayed breaking news.
Viktor Volkov had been captured.
But beneath the headline was another photograph.
A man standing beside Viktor.
Cassian went pale.
Clara noticed.
“Who is that?”
Cassian stared at the screen.
“My father.”
Clara froze.
“That can't be.”
Cassian whispered:
“He died twenty years ago.”
The television screen changed.
The man looked directly into the camera.

And beneath his photograph appeared one sentence:
